the series in general is very alright, it has very high moments but often takes too long to get there (especially in the 2nd game). The story and its structure is fascinating, but also doesn't always make sense, and the characters are pretty drastically spread apart in terms of how much I cared about them.

The fitting answer would be to give it a 9.99, however that's not reality.

999, after playing Danganronpa and then the PW trilogy, felt like a mediocre third option at best. I was going through all the side endings and thinking this game was pretty freaking meh, and had a lot of random exposition in it for nothing. And then I got to the true ending and was amazed at how it all came together at the end. Definitely pulled the game up out of a nosedive toward mediocrity-at-best.

It's still a really slow burn to get there and the actual ending is a smidge baffling.

(Not a 10 because all non-Japanese releases botch at least one reveal. On DS the flashback in the 9/kyuu reveal is to the wrong version, and on Vita onwards the interface spoils Zero's identity early.)

Good build up but the ending falls so flat it sours me on the game's story overall. Probably got ruined by playing Ever17 first, which is the overall concept done right.

I'd give the ending a 0 and the rest of the game 8. Averaging out that's above a 3 but 3 still feels right.

9/10 seems fitting. I think I nominated this, I really didn't think I'd be into it at first but at some point along the way it clicked and I got really invested. Some of it is a bit clunky looking back but I'm surprised just how well put together most of it is, and how cleanly the twists wind up working. I got lucky with the endings order for sure though.

9/10. I have to say I am a little surprised that the ratings here arent higher. I think that this is an exceptionally successful story that uses the video game medium very well and is greatly impactful in an emotional sense. This is all brought together by an impeccable ending.

I guess it can be said that there is one order to the endings other than Ace that builds the drama much better than the others, that being Coffin (if you do it)>Sub>Knife>Safe>True, however this is not that important.

That's the exact order I got! Agreed it's the best one for suspense. (I got Axe between Knife and Safe but it's the least consequential ending anyway so *shrug*).

I'm also surprised the ratings aren't higher :(

Virtue's Last Reward is just such a better experience, and I'm not a huge fan of 999's cast. I like Ace and Snake. Everyone else is just okay.

I'll reiterate a lot of what I said in my horror rankings last year: I don't like the game's cast, tonal issues, and I believe the dialogue is too wooden and clunky to be enjoyable, but I do enjoy several of the game's wacky premises and overall it has an undeniably great sense of mystery and progression.
