how do we stop this injustice without a deep reconfiguration of societal ideals, race relations, and gender roles. Lets not even address the elephant in the room which is the flawed system of capitalism.

Damn, businesses should hire nothing but black women, think of all the labor savings they could bank!

The wage gap is such a stupid, massively debunked myth and it's really grating how it's still pushed.
Compare same job, same experience level and years, same hours worked, etc... and there is no "gap".
Compare a part time receptionist against lawyer with 20 years on the job, and...you get a Kamala Harris talking point.

It's not a myth, though I agree that the stats often thrown around when portraying the gap feel misleading. The source article cited in the tweet indictates that a sizeable portion of the gap is unexplained even when things like education and occupation are controlled for. Here's one study cited by that article:

https://www.pnas.org/content/109/41/16474.abstract#aff-1

Personally, I find that compelling evidence that women often get worse deals for the same jobs, regardless of other factors.

There's racism being instilled into our lives at some point. We should look at our education system I guess. When American stops meaning white male to most people, that might be an indicator we're making progress.
I mean, I'm talking out my ass here, but almost everyone but white males are some sub-American like Asian American, native American, Mexican American, etc. Why do we think like that? Aren't we all Americans?

Oh God, *Facepalm*.

Wage gaps are caused by various other factors like time taken off work, hours worked, profession chosen, ability to negotiate pay, etc.

Skin color and gender may affect some factors, but that works both ways.

Women in general make less, because on average they work less. And when they do work, they generally take the lower end jobs that pay less.

you perhaps could then see the problem if women/minorities are given fewer hours, given less consideration in negotiation, are not hired for higher end jobs, are not given access to higher paying professions, etc., right?

because THAT is the issue. race/gender plays into all/most of the other factors. and one could show that if you check to see if there are racial/gender disparities in the same direction in all of those other factors. after a certain point, you have to admit that race/gender affect pay

That is absolutely an issue. What isn't an issue is repeating this "fact" that the TC posted. It's super misleading and makes the issue sound like a woman is paid less for doing the same job as a man. If it said "on average" or "due to fewer opportunities presented" it wouldn't be as polarizing trying to convey a very important message.

Ok so 13% of our population in the us is African American. 200million are 18 or older.

Lets say to make this easy that half of them are women.

so 6.5% of the population are black women.

That is 13 million black women of working age in this country.

The average income in the US is 31k a year.

So 13 million * 31k is 403 billion dollars per year.

63% of 403 billion dollars = 254 billion dollars.

Nobody makes 254 billion a year, so nobody makes 63 cents for every dollar a black woman makes in the US.

That's where your math went wrong. The whole point of this statistic is that black women make substantially less than the overall average income, on average. If you want to do that math, you need a specific average income stat for black women.

Mostly, they're just settling for "it's not a matter of overt racists/misogynists choosing to pay PoC/women less for the same work" and saying that's good enough, rather than trying to get to the root cause of the statistical difference and face the much more difficult question of "what can be done to fix this?".

Well, we could start by splintering the 'White' population instead of grouping them all together. I'd be curious, for example, to see a comparison of a Protestant white man vs Catholic white man vs a Jewish white man vs Episcopalian white man. I'm willing to bet there will be inequalities there as well.

My point has nothing to do with just the Jewish people. Yes, they tend to have more wealth. So do Episcopalians. It is because their religious culture values education.

The entire point is that a person's education and upbringing have much more to do with how much they make than skin color.
