Blue also has Rotu and Hunahpu. I feel the worst tribe color has to be green or purple, because the other colors either have too many tribes or their single tribe did too well.

Watched it this morning. Overall I like the cast. Ricard and Shan are early favorites, but there isn't anyone that I'm rolling my eyes at yet. JD is a little extra, though.

Not a huge fan of the dice thing, more random junk polluting the game is not really my jam, but I've come to accept it at this point. Jeff breaking the 4th wall is jarring.

I also watched it this morning. JD is my favorite so far. Shan is pretty great as well. Erika is very cute. Nassir has the potential to be a great trainwreck. Brad too to a lesser degree. Sydney got a suspicious amount of screen time for random young normalish girl who does virtually nothing of significance and doesn't even go to tribal council, which makes me think she's either going to be a big character in some way and/or win. Sara was cute and will be missed. Nobody else is really drawing me in yet but I do think this cast has the potential to put on a good show.

I actually really did like the focus on the backstories and the fourth wall breaking by Jeff. Made the experience feel a little more intimate. THAT BEING SAID, I don't really want it to penetrate the edit much beyond the two-hour premiere. If it continues, it's going to eat up a lot of screentime in a season that's already got a ton going on in a short amount of time.

The thing that worries me most is how much shit they're throwing into an already abbreviated season. I'd be groaning at all of these twists in a normal season, but this is really just too much now.

I think, for the first time since Tocantins/Samoa-ish, I'm going to try and watch this season as casually as possible without participating in a shit ton of online discussion and analyzing the edit and everything and see how that enhances my enjoyment of it.

In other news, I've fallen behind on Big Brother again. In fact, I don't even remember where I left off. I THINK it was the Hannah boot but I MIGHT have watched one more episode beyond that? Not sure. Anyway bring on CBB3. Out of all the seasons of BB I've seen (BB18-23 plus CBB1/2), CBB2 is easily my favorite.

There was a lot of fourth wall breakage. Not just Jeff speaking to the folks at home repeatedly, but also a number of quick shots of the camera crew. Interesting choices being made that I'm not against at this point in the run.

Like, it's a subtle visual reminder that despite being given no food and bare minimum of supplies and a faster grind to the finish, there's still a support system watching over they're well-being outside of the game's structure. It's like a bit of a comforting blanket for anyone watching with a pandemic or more paranoid mindset that this is a game and these people are okay and want to be there, and it's about putting on a show for the viewers.

The first episode feels like a thank you letter and a promise to do the best job they can. As soon as we get back to a tighter one hour format, it's back to business.

On a side note, does Brad remind anyone else of Fourth Doctor Tom Baker?

Being a nerd, and yellow being my favorite color, I decided to put this theory to the test and found that, like any color, they have had some great successes and great failures.

Pagong - Went into the merge tied 5-5, but was systematically eliminated.

Boran - Went into the merge up 6-4, and after sacrificing two of their own, systematically eliminated the remaining Samburu. Produced the winner.

Jaburu - Original tribe went into the merge down 4-6, but had picked up three members of Tambaqui at the swap, making it truly 7-3. Produced the winner.

Saboga - Failed hard early on and was eventually absorbed by Chapera and Mogo Mogo. Rupert and Jenna assimilated themselves nicely in NuChapera and made the final four.

Yasur - Original tribe went into the merge up 6-4 and eliminated 3 of the remaining Lopevi, but then fell apart and the last man from Lopevi pulled through and won.

Nakum - Here's a weird one. The original tribe went into the merge tied 5-5 while the swapped Nakum was up 6-4. The swapped tribe initially dominated the merge, but then fell apart. Incidentally the winner was a Nakum -> Yaxha swapee. Take this one for what you will.

Manihiki - Lost the first immunity challenge didn't lose the second ONLY because Aitu threw it. The remaining members spent the rest of the season making little-no impact.

Zhan Hu - Went into the merge down 4-6 and, despite a couple of sacrifices by Fei Long, everyone who had ever been on the tribe was gone before the finale.

Kota - The "core" members of this constantly swapping tribe went into the merge down 4-5. Despite Fang finally having the momentum, Bob went on an immunity run and made a valuable ally on the inside, giving him the win.

Foa Foa - Got demolished pre-merge and went in down 4-8, but made the biggest comeback in Survivor history and made up the final three.

La Flor - Original tribe was up 8-4 at the merge while the swapped iteration was tied 6-6. The merge was crazy with alliances that weren't divided among any pre-merge lines. Produced the winner.

Tandang - Dominated the pre-merge, becoming the first tribe to exist from the beginning of the game until the merge without ever going to tribal council. Despite making up three of the final five, Denise from the ill-fated Matsing tribe won the game.

Masaya - Lost the first immunity challenge but then did okay until the shuffle when it was selected by the producers as the tribe to no longer exist. Three original members made the merge and Mama C lost in the finals.

Angkor - Added as a third tribe that only existed after the first swap and ceased to exist at the second swap. During their short existance, they performed pretty pitifully. Tasha made the finals but received no jury votes.

Gondol - Performed exceptionally well, avoiding tribal council pre-swap and having two members make the merge without having been to tribal council. Produced the winner.

Soko - Avoided tribal council pre-swap, and Jessica, Mike and Cole avoided tribal council pre-merge entirely. Ceased to see success at the merge. The original tribe was whiped out by the final five, and the swapped tribe produced the two losing finalists.

Kama - Pretty much dominated the game until the final 7. The tribe itself never went to tribal council, and, despite a couple of hiccups, no configuration was down in numbers until Aurora was booted at the final six. Somehow managed to not come up with the winner, though.

Production ruined the premiere by putting Ricard up to that nonsense that was decided before the season. Probst shouldn't have said anything and nobody would've been offended since he wouldn't have faked a "moment." There's no way that ONE guy would make him change, unless that guy's name is Jeffrey Lee Probst. The problem I had was the synthesis of a moment that was very, very cringey to watch.

I can't say I remember much else from the premiere, which is a very bad thing.

That's the problem, yeah. It feels very performative, and even though Jeff CLEARLY wanted to do it, the fact that they tried foisting responsibility on Evvie, and then eventually settled on letting Ricard eat the blame, sucks.

Survivor was good. It was modern Survivor, though if I were Evvie I'd probably not want to work with Tiffany once she proved herself to be volatile and unable to listen since she had to be told eight times how Xander's idol worked. Makes it hard to trust her vote and her ability to remain composed.

I don't watch BB anymore, as I've stated, and I spoiled myself last week that Xavier won so yeah.

This season is in Fiji so it's highly unlikely to be even remotely as tough as the likes of the brutal heat of Africa, Guatemala, or Kaoh Rong or the constant rainstorms of Samoa, Philippines, or Cambodia. It doesn't matter how they try to create "more difficulty" since it's not gonna work, especially once they merge and get a flint full-time.

The only season in Fiji that's been all that tough was David vs. Goliath, which had two cyclones and another brutal rainstorm pre-merge. MvX had a tough start but then got easy after that. This season hasn't had any rain like that yet, and that's what makes it tough. Plus high temps in Fiji are usually around 90F so heat isn't an issue.

I think Evvie might be a lot more vulnerable than they thinks they are. Liana and Tiffany seem close enough.

And if there's no swap this season, this will be the first Survivor season in ten years (South Pacific) to have no swap of any kind. That would be insane. I'd love to see Yase go down to one or two people. Possible "Intentional Matsing" there. Not quite sure who would still be around at that point, but whoever it is would have a very good chance to win the whole shebang. Luvu could Tandang themselves if they win too much and start to hate each other.

There's almost certainly going to be a swap. There was a pre-season video where Jeff was talking about twists and how everyone hates every twist at first but then they grow to love them, and singled out the tribe swap and said "Now people get mad if there isn't a tribe swap!" I doubt he'd say something like that and then not do a swap this season.

Agreed. That confessional about Xander's idol is foreshadowing Evvie's game later getting upended by it. Same thing for the edit being clear for Tiffany going home this episode; it's just boosting Xander up as a future threat and the downfall of Evvie/Liana's alliance.

After two episodes, I think Naseer's gotten the best edit so far: we got extended confirmation he was telling his tribe the truth about the idol hunt and he was in danger of going home until they won immunity, and next episode he's an indispensable member of the tribe.

My BB23 ranking:

16. Kyland - Kinda scummy with the Sarah Beth stuff, really flakey and toyed with people's emotions by telling unnecessary lies, helped pave the way for an obvious winner because his ego wouldn't let him take a strong contender out, then in the last two weeks became unapologetically nasty and when he got the blindside he had coming to him he made it personal and brought in stuff from outside the game, then when Julie offered him a chance to apologize at the reunion he made Will's apology to Shirin seem like the most sincere apology ever.

15. Derek F - Sat around the whole game being a lazy slob who just ate and slept and seemed frustrating for the other houseguests to live and play the game with, then had the audacity to tell Azah that he dragged her to the end and that she owed him, and repeate this bullshit to other houseguests and in the DR over and over and over again, totally negating any positives his humor brought to the season.

14. Travis - A boring first boot that probably would have become a douchebag had he lasted.

13. Whitney - On one hand I feel bad for her because she appeared to be a scapegoat for things that the majority of the house was saying/thinking, but at the same time I don't because she apparently said some controversial things on the live feeds and aligned herself with big, loud targets, both of these things putting a target on her.

12. Xavier - Props for being the first black winner, but otherwise he was very similar to the typical guy we've seen win this game a lot lately - handsome, athletic, intelligent, well-spoken, charming, and watching him play Big Brother is about as interesting as watching flies fuck. He gets credit over guys like Jackson and Cody for not being an actively shitty person and for occasionally being a pretty witty narrator.

11. Azah - Such a kind spirit, such a boring TV character/Big Brother player. I was amused at her apparent refusal to ever reset her answers exactly when Julie said to, almost always either jumping the gun or leaving it up too long.

10. Christian - For a guy who was by far my least-favorite in the premiere, he did a decent job of making me appreciate the doofiness he brough to the show.

9. Sarah Beth - Quirky and amusing early on, but got kind of uncomfortably strange later (but not SO bad that it totally negated her early goodness).

8. Brent - I'm probably a huge outlier having Brent in my top half, and I'll admit he was a sexist prick, but I'm a big fan of the archetype that is the young guy who thinks he's God's gift to the world, but nobody else sees him that way and thus both the other contestants and the editors shit on him relentlessly until he is blindsided early in a very embarrassing fashion (see also: Drew Christy, Jozea Flores).

7. Hannah - Smart young woman with a good enough grasp on the game but just a little too naive to get to the end and win, and could occasionally be really funny and cute.

6. Claire - Really fun, quirky narrator who made a lot of great quips, priceless facial expressions, and, under the circumstances, took her elimination like a fucking champ.

5. Britini - Could be kinda loud and annoying at times, but I obviously can't blame her for that. I loved her spirit and humor and really sympathized with her inability to gain any sort of traction in the social game.

4. Alyssa - Early on her constant whining annoyed me but eventually it became sort of an amusing running gag. Combined with her general stupidity, I couldn't help but love my bikini genie.

3. Derek X - Super nice kid with a great backstory, entertaining BB player with a great story arc, had lots of funny moments, really helped make the middle of the season good. I have a very good feeling we'll see him again.

2. Frenchie - Overplayed the fuck out of the game way too quickly and paid for it dearly. Made the first two weeks some of the most hilarious Big Brother gameplay I've ever seen, and seemed like he had a big heart to boot.

1. Tiffany - Perfect mix of phenomenal gameplay and insane personality. The editors never knew what to do with her and I mean that in a good way - in some episodes she would be unbelievably competent, and in others she'd be a total trainwreck. It was simultaneously great and frustrating to watch someone wreak this kind of havoc all over the house and then be the unanimous target as soon as the game came down to her alliance. God bless her.
