Foothills
Pioneer's Horizon
Valestein

Very really quite cool at first. And then it keeps going and it's not nearly cool enough to sustain itself without adding new variety, you realize it was mostly a cool intro and not a cool song, and it isn't something that lends itself to repeated listening. To clarify, there's *variety* (I like the horn, for example), but it's like... I find the song kind of oppressive (which is why I mentioned it isn't something to loop) and the *aesthetic* basically never varies, and most changes in the song itself get lost in the overbearing atmosphere. It needs to be like, less loud or mixed differently for me to appreciate it as many would argue it deserves.

Solid orchestral song. Sadly, is the type of piece I'd enjoy at a concert, right until I start dozing off. Take that as you will

Very nice aesthetic. Love the funky piano a minute in. I really need to check this soundtrack out. It seems to have nailed an aesthetic I am super into about 1% of the time. Now is not one of those times but it is still very good!

I feel like today most voters will choose their votes based on the style. They're all so distinct and outspoken. This is one of those songs that I think is "perfect" in some sense. Not in that it's a favorite or that I love everything about it, more in the sense that everything works seamlessly together. I feel like changing anything about the song would collapse the entire house of cards like a bullseye--it's so smoothly constructed. Checkmate

I don't think I like Ishikawa much of Falcom composers (#dealwithit @ristar). The intro throws me off for some reason; it triggers some atavistic pet peeve I have. Don't like how... straightforward the percussion is either? The downbeat drum is annoying. The rest is solid, and Yonemitsu does a lot with the arrangement, because of course he does. Was gonna say it's one of the few tracks where I prefer the Ys Vs arrangement, but that was apparently Roudo Castle, and I feel like I'm getting Mandeled.

I'm not sure at all how I feel about this. It's definitely got personality, I can give it that... it's a nice track, nice to listen to, not painful by any means, and it seems to grow on you as you listen to it more. I still can't articulate anything good about it. It's just enjoyable. Valestein barely edges this out

I was apprehensive looking at the song list but today came out surprisingly good!

Painted Foothills
Pioneer's Horizon
Normal Battle

Today is difficult for me, as it's a "was definitely considering voting against my own nomination" day. I didn't, but I considered it.

DR2: This song is just.. really good. I kind of wish it had delivered on the metal opening a bit more throughout, but I am in love with the bassline, and I love when the electric guitar shines through more than the trumpets and such. I especially love that part at ~5:40 or so. (Moment of honesty, I like the non-Kill Command investigation music just a tiny bit more.)
Heavensward: It is very hard to vote against this one for me. It is my absolute, absolute favorite "open area" music in FFXIV. It starts low, slow, and emotional, and just hits the right notes as it swells, and is very much a "listen to the end" when the music ascends to a more uptempo peak at ~4:00, to a slow ending note at 4:45. I like how the strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion all get their time in the limelight during the song, with another section or two taking over the secondaries, and... well, I just have a lot of memories about this song, okay? I am a bit annoyed that this upload does cut off the last couple of seconds, which is just some added harp plinking as it slows a bit more before it cuts out for a few seconds and loops, but such is life in the time of Squeenix takedowns. Gotta stick with it though it'll probably lose this round anyway

Sonic CD - Something about this track just doesn't sit well with me. I think it's because it's, for a Sonic song, just so SLOW. Perhaps it was also the... "airy?" three-note "Phendrana Drifts" alternating in key was distasteful here with the drum going on. I like a lot of Sonic music, but this just wasn't for me, and sounds more like it belonged in a Bomberman game, honestly.
Timespinner - I do rather enjoy when percussion mimics a clock, and the harp and string opening sits well with me, as does the flute and the staccato strings providing its backup melody. After 1:08, it also reminds me of some of the later DS Castlevanias for some reason, which... yeah, it worked really well for me. This one got my vote.

Ys3 - I dunno how I feel about it right out of the gate. It's channeling some severe 90's beat-em-up arcade with the opening and the percussion off the bat, but the panpipes going on there are more reminiscent of Golden Sun? When the panpipes aren't playing, I get more confused than anything what it's actually trying to accomplish, but it keeps drifting back to 90s arcade. Let's see how it goes with its competition.
PkmnTCG- Heh. The actual dealing of the cards lends it a bit of character. This is funkier than it has any right to be for old Game Boy, and while its "percussion" is almost necessarily messy, it has a good bassline, and does some interesting things with the limited capabilities the original GB had. Like Upper City yesterday, I think it's got my vote just on sheer pique.

Ahhhh 1:55 of Pioneer's Horizon is such a magical moment that really likes to pop up randomly in my brain! Big Lost Shinjuku/Heaven's Rock Seat vibes there (do people even recognize Etrian Odyssey song names?). Interestingly, I'm not big on the instruments and don't expect I would like the soundtrack in general, but they happen to be used in a way that I find appealing here!

oh boy it's Ekoroshia. for those who don't know, each danganronpa game has two investigation themes: one for the early chapters, and one for the later chapters. Ikoroshia is the earlier version, Ekoroshia (kill command) is the later version.

I have a story about this track actually! At some point i was listening to a personal vgm playlist, and either ikoroshia or ekoroshia was on it. My mom came over and asked what I was listening to, so I let her listen to some of it (it was one of the quieter parts i think?), and she was like "you like listening... to THIS?" and i have been scarred for life ever since thanks mom.

anyway ekoroshia SUCKS and here's why.

so we start with Ikoroshia. Ikoroshia is great! actually let me try to do a quick description of why i like ikoroshia. ikoroshia is, to me, possibly perfect investigation music. the opening with the weird background sounds over the "mysterious sounding" melody line played by the synth sets you up for "oh boy we're solving a mystery". then it breaks into this nice and funky bit, and from there it swaps between a few different sections flawlessly -- not distracting, but not boring either. hopefully that was a good description. i could listen to ikoroshia on loop for a very long time and not get bored. it's good.

so ekoroshia is like ikoroshia but with GUITARS! so clearly it must be better! and... ok, listening to them back to back, it does sound pretty good. but ekoroshia *really* does not stand on its own. the guitars are cool, and they're riffing on a happy version of ikoroshia! clearly it must be better! no. it sounds like an obligatory remix. it sounds like a jam session with an amateur guitarist. it sounds like a mess.

why would you do this. nothing flows correctly here. the guitar prevents me from hearing the actual cool things about this song. please shut up guitar. let me listen to "ikoroshia but with a bit of guitar to add some spice" and not "oh somebody just picked up an electric guitar and now they won't let any of the other members of the band hear themselves think." gah. fuck you ekoroshia. you ruined ikoroshia. i will never forgive you. LISTEN TO HOW MUCH BETTER IT SOUNDS STARTING AT ABOUT 3:10 GAAAAAAAAAH. but at 3:55 there's that insidious lick going on which is so INVASIVE stop NOODLING over GOOD MUSIC and come up with an actual GUITAR SOLO OR SOMETHING.

ok while im talking lets talk about the rest

FFXIV song is kinda zzz but at least it's good, cohesive music (*glares*).

Tidal Tempest is a nostalgic sound for an age before i was born (this is going to make somebody feel really old). sounds cool! i like.

when i first listened to Pioneer's Horizon, it felt like something i *should* like, but like it was missing something. that feeling is mostly gone now, but it still lingers. i think compositionally i prefer this to Tidal Tempest, but Tidal Tempest has sound in all the places that matter to me right now.

mmmm ryo yonemitsu.

this is alright. it's not particularly *good*, but definitely not offensive.

(disclaimer: despite all of this slander, kill command/ekoroshia is a perfectly fine song and i don't think less of you or anything if you like it. i just think it's worse than ikoroshia.)

Kill Command
Pioneer's Horizon
Valestein Castle

Kill Command is pretty cool! I can dig it the whole way through, pretty much. Painted Foothills is okay but I don't get it. Would not rank it very high among FFXIV songs (or even Heavensward songs - every Ishgard theme is much better).

More chill music eh. Kinda feels like Trails town music or something. Pioneer's Horizon has a neat feel to it that reminds me of some other game I can't remember. Chrono Cross? The guitar mainly. I dunno. It's cool.

This isn't my favorite version of Valestein Castle (that'd be the Felghana version), but I still like the song. Duel...meh.

Painted Foothills
Pioneers Horizon
Valestein Castle

- I appreciate that Kill Command tries a bunch of stuff but a lot of it doesnt quite work for me-not sure why but the guitar gets on my nerves a little bit. I like the intro, and the horn solo at 3:54 is nice, but the rest of it is meh. Painted Foothills is very well done orchestral sweeping BIG ENVIRONMENT music, works for me

- Similar songs vibe-wise but Pioneers Horizon pulls me in quicker while it takes a bit longer for Tidal Tempest and its more interesting overall, pretty close but Ill give it the edge

- first of all lol @ the PTCG thumbnail. Second of all, Normal Battle is some simple but solid Game-Boy era chiptune that manages to impress me in a way that a lot of songs from that era dont? That 1:15 switch is honestly great, and I wish it got expanded upon a little bit more. I just like the way Valestein Castle does things a lot more though-i'm a sucker for this type of melody arrangement

Ekoroshia is still cool as hell after all these years. Danganronpa doesn't seem like my thing, but the music is great.

Painted Foothills is a good change of pace from the "FFXIV genre".

---

Tidal Tempest has a really weird vibe to it (kinda like the intro to that earlier Klonoa song maybe?), this is pretty good though.

Pioneer's Horizon is really cool, and one of my favorite discoveries this year! I was NOT expecting to like this as much as I do, but this is one of the best "indie" instrumentation sets I've heard. I @#$% LOVE that intro!!

---

NO NFUN Ishikawa is GREAT anyways very solid Ys 3 song. Oath in Felghana is actually my favorite rendition of the Ys 3 soundtrack, but Ishikawa and Yonemitsu are always great so this isn't a tough choice.

I never really got the Pokmon TCG VGM hype, have always just preferred the main series music on GBC. This song is too HAPPY for a battle theme!!

Kill Command

they keyboard in ekoroshia reminds me of murasaki i think that's kind of the biggest reason i like it. also helps that i'm not allergic to guitars or track length or whatever. it's just really solid. painted foothills is an emotional song and those never make it into vgmc so good job whoever managed that here. nearly cried to watching a dragon clipping through trees. okay not really, but if the footage wasn't specifically that i might've, maybe. thematically sad match

tidal 216. pioneer's horizon is like the art of the mc whose name i forgot in this upload, in that it feels like it should've come together better than it did (wow that's two very subjective takes)

valestein sure is a ys song. maybe overdid it on the drums. wish all of it was as cool as halfway through. moving on, this isn't a shop theme? darn. it's pretty fun.

no rankings since i'm going to think more before deciding where to put them but i know what i'm siding with at least

-(jazz. i like things that combine electronic elements and jazz and rock elements together into the same songs~! the polymeter-esque bits at 3:00 is SO GOOD. i never have much to say about this song but i like these things)-

-[pioneer's horisong(i mean painted foothills) has a really appealing flying animal in the video that i want to be friends with. the environment is gorgeous and the video definitely helps sell me on the song in a way that i wouldn't be sold on without it OOPS SQUARE ENIX REQUIREMENTS ARE WORKINg ON ME. i like pretty environments that would have slow violing song : ) oboes?! yay! I like that instrument! when i focus on some of the harmonies in this instead of thinking "boring song" then i actually think COOL SONG because the harmonies at a few random times will randomly be kinda oddly voiced thick ones that thread their WIRES into my blood stream and get me to think about tree roots and why "beautiful" is so good and stuff. the nature flute! yay! musically simple /sounding/ on the surface, but there's a lot to pay attention to if i actually try to look, the transition at 4:02 with the drums is nice and shifts my perception of the rhythm but not quite as much as rhythm-changer ha ha]-

-{i did not expect to be voting this way going in to today either don't worry. very close}-

-----

-("newj ack swing" (is that the moth?"" we))) well this might be that, it's funky shuffly feely 90s electronic music which is r ight up my alley. I didn't think about this until literally 5 seconds ago, but now that i've listened to all of kaze no notam i might compare this to that actually. it has the same brand of "it's from the 90s but it feels like it's from 2019 trying to sound like it's from the 90s (in a good way)" somehow. it feels AHEAD OF ITS TIME like it's from the FUTURE which is so funny because this game is about time travel but too bad this song is one of the Present ones. I love how the chord progression is just transposing up the whole song up and down by a whole step, though i wish there were more melodic interactions with that behavior, i guess the bright synth melody at :46 does that job! I love fake piano in this era...~! AAAH i like how metal sonic looks so shiny just like all of these synth sounds from 1980249)-

-[jeff ball is holding a ball in his hand is so good at why does this song sound so familiar like i've heard it before...i don't under stand how this car is a real peace driver. i'm feeling like the rational thing to do would be to drink all of the blood by the vampire like a teleprompter. but it's no use (yous) because these TINY Dissonances in the thing at the beginning are so fun! and in the harp, they make it so that this song is not 'boring' and i think that is one of the things jeff ball is so good at like that one steven universe song that has all the chords when steven gets really big. his stuff always feels full and uh acutally i only know like 6 jeff ball songs but STILL. this song makes me so happy because it reminds me of like 20 other songs that i really like from the 1990s that sound like this but i think i probably like this song more than all of them. it's exactly the right kind of catchy for me, especially that very intro]-

-{ball}-

-----

-(AAhhh finally. ever since the early vgmcs i have been trying to convince board 8 that Ryo Yonemitsu arranged Ys music is the BEST. and this was before falcom was even popular here and almost no one really expressed their interest in stuff from it other than me that i saw. Ys I & II PCE in particular was a mega favorite for me since before i even met gamebop in 2008 (following gamebop to board 8 back then is the reason i'm even here). i remember being startled to find out later that i "didn't like falcom music like i thought i did" based on a bunch of falcom noms i wasn't into being beaten into my head in future years, and it took re-immersing myself on my own time to come back to the conclusion that "no, i love falcom music, board 8 just likse all the songs i dont....". That said, maybe it's a re-awakening of similar feelings as before LOL BEcause this is definitely not a song i think of when i think "i love Ys III PC Engine" but OH WELL you can't win everything...i'm just thankful that pc engine ys is finally represented here which i have wanted since the fucking beginning before i even saw anyone talk about falcom here, not all this crap like "the song i dont like" and whatever. th8is is it, this is what i wanted to see (to be fair, i could've actually tried nominating ryo yonemitsu ys music more aggressively, but was discouraged by cold reception to the sound of yonemitsu's versions of anything at the time, and perceived "obscurity" relative to the stuff i saw be more celebrated at the time. absolutely ridiculous to think about "being afraid to nom ys music on board 8" ever). Also i forgot that romun empire was actually in vgmc13 (still took way too long to get a yonemitsu in) but i'm pretty sure that nom was secretly illegal OO0PS
~~~~~
The way this track excels is of course, being Yonemitsu, having the most 80s90s synth sound design possible. but his instrumentation choices are sublime to a degree i think almost no one else even gets close to within that realm. Nothing feels from this era of music is as clean, beautiful and shiny...it's one of those songs where when talking about what i like about it i can just point to every single layer of the entire song. The backing chords held out at :28, the fake pan flute makes me think of klonoa : D I love klonoa!!!!!! nothing in this track feels static, every layer is alive, the synth is crazy expressive with those vibrato moments. there's not a moment of the track void of crystalline details that make me perk my asymmetrical ears up. aaah when the pads come to the forefront at 1:21 i actually get chills--i don't even like the composition of this song that much but yonemitsu ois SO FUCKING PERFECT AT SOUND DESIGN WHAT THE HECK56tt that no matter what he touches i'm suddenly elevated into the SpavAPCE)-
-[i actually like a lot of the pokemon tcg music (especially 2) and probably rank it a slight bit above rby/gsc, but i'm not even sure there's a song that could've been picked from it that i like less than this one? struggling to dig for positive things to say here: i like ichiro shimakura as a composer a lot, and his style /does/ shine through here at least a little bit. most notably this track sounds quite a bit more liveplayed-aligned than rby/gsc stuff that's all very flat and unshaped. it's good at being just a bit funky and i can get significantly more immersed because of tiny details like all the grace notes or the nicely voiced interesting harmonoies in the background. pokemon tcg music is good at taking an effort to showcase CHANNEL ECONOMY it always makes the most use possible out of its limitation set=====$%%%not in terms of interesting sound design or anything, but in terms of feeling like more notes are playing than there are. The syncopation leaves room for stuff like "there's this full bassline but at the split seconds there isn't a note in the bassline, you hear a full chord that takes up all the channels for a split second" and stuff like that, stuff like that is cool and i respect it a lot. This comparison is going to make no sense to anyone but it reminds me a lot of Vectorman in that way, except trying to be "slightly jazzy" instead of trying to be 90s dance music. i wish i actually liked this song, but it's a lot like katamari stuff for me TOO HAPPY even though i could go on and on about how well done i consider it to be]-
Kinda boring matchups this time around, sadly. Except for Valestein castle that is eternally a banger.
Another great day of music! The first two matches are closer than the number rating would imply, more like a 0.1-0.2 difference between them.
Shout out to Normal Battle for both the nostalgia trip and for being such a damn good song given the state of its technology.
