Yeah I think there's some merit to it. Honestly the result I get describes me pretty well, and I've taken the test a handful of times and have always gotten the same thing.

I went from INTJ before college to ENTP (or something) in college so if it's reflective of anything, which is questionable, I think it's more your current circumstances than anything inherent.

My answer to the poll is no.

Introversion/extroversion is a real personality dichotomy thats actually meaningful (which is also present in scientifically valid personality classification schemes and which can actually predict behavior).

The other three axes are meaningless, though.

This. It's not perfect, but it's a great way for getting a better understanding of yourself and others.

Voted no, because everythings binary and real people arent like that, but there probably is a way to map traits like these on a spectrum that could be useful

While it's difficult, perhaps ridiculous, to put people in simple boxes and say that's just who they are/will be, there is some validity to identifying broad personality traits. It's also quite useful in writing fictional characters with an internal consistency.

it's descriptive, not prescriptive

they ask you a bazillion variants of "do you feel more relaxed by yourself or with other people?" then tell you whether you said you were extroverted or introverted

they ask you a bazillion variants of "do you like to plan ahead or play it by ear?" then tell you whether you said you plan ahead or play it by ear

and so on and so forth

it's not as if there are 16 buckets of people. but it's a fun conduit through which to talk about yourself and your interests. better than star signs because you at least get to choose your meyers-briggs one

Just a couple days ago I went through old school papers and apparently in a high school class, I took a survey and I got ISFJ (or INFJ, I already cant remember it exactly).

It makes some sense to me, but I dont take it as absolute.

It's EXTREMELY useful for understanding your own behaviour and how to interact with people who have different personality types, as well as assigning tasks to people based on their natural aptitudes.

Whether all of it's predictions are 100% true or not... well, of course not. Everybody is different and it doesn't matter if you make 4 buckets or 12 buckets or 128 buckets of personality types, everyone isn't going to fall neatly into all of them. But that doesn't mean it's not useful.

I had to do the DiSC profile for my professional designation and I found it extremely useful for looking at why I was having conflict with some cooworkers who just approached issues differently than I did. When I started changing how I talked to fit how they take feedback and direction (which was very different form how I would take feedback or direction), it made working together a lot easier.

Agreed with most here who are saying it's interesting or has some validity but it's obviously not absolute or anything. I feel the same way about zodiac signs.

There's a newer personality test thing I've seen go around but I can't remember what it was called...

I think it's fun and insightful. I've done a lot of personality test and MBTI is the one I feel has the most depth and breadth to it. I recently learned about the shadow functions and was surprised at how applicable it was. I've seen a couple of other close friends who took MBTI somewhat seriously and liked how it described them. I definitely would say it's a lot better than zodiac signs and the best of the personality tests. That said, I don't think there's much to say about it once you're done and I wouldn't spend any money exploring it further.

I think the biggest single problem is that people really focus in on what these tests say about them and think "haha that's totally true!" and even develope some kind of pride in what their "type" is, but neglect moving on to the next stage which is determine how this helps you interact with other people.

That's where the value actually lies - you have a natural way that you talk to people about problems and people with other personality types will interpret that differently. If you can figure out someone's personality type you can use these kinds of systems to change how you approach them differently.

If you just stop at what the test says about you then you really miss out.

The big problem with MBTI is the big problem with IQ. It's one of those pseudoscientific parts of psychology where people think they can distill an extremely complicated behavior like "extroversion" or "intelligence" down to a single number that describes how much of that thing someone has. It completely ignores all context. People's behavior in a laboratory setting or during a standardized test will not generalize to other settings.

I think it can be possible to some extent to change some aspects of your personality, but doing a radical change like INTJ to ESFP seems pretty much impossible as they are complete polar opposites.

Introversion/extroversion may be the easiest aspect to change over time, especially for those who were closer to the middle in that area.

Yeah, it's useful for that purpose for sure. Apparently, I found out that the potential for getting into arguments with other people is increased when both people are J types. This was rather interesting since I have tested as an ISTJ.

It really can't be compared to zodiac signs since you can't change those, while it's technically possible for MBTI type to change over time.
