I had to attend what was essentially an after-school babysitting program when I was little, and one of the kids would always be playing Dragon Quest Monsters. I thought it looked cool and decided to buy a copy myself, so that was my introduction.

had the first game on NES (but with a bad battery so I never got too far) then rented 4 from the video store a couple times and managed to have a save file that didn't get overwritten between rentals for long enough to reach Chapter 5, but didn't beat it.

Dragon Quest VIII was the first one I played, but not because of the FF12 demo. I had heard of Dragon Warrior before that though and I knew it was the same series, I just never played it because the NES era was before my time and I didn't have a PS1 (well I did for a couple days but it was defective and we traded it in for a Dreamcast)

Definitely was the first time Ive played Dragon Quest. All these years later 8 is one of only 2 DQ games Ive even finished and Ive only played like 4 games in the series (working on 11 right now even)

I think my first game was Dragon Quest Monsters Joker, but it might've been the DS version of IV. I do think I briefly saw someone playing VIII before that, though, and I think I was vaguely aware there was a series called Dragon Warrior.

I decided to play Dragon Quest on a whim mere months before Smash Bros would introduce Hero. Mainly because it was available on mobiles and I needed a game to play on the train commutes home.
I pretty much played DQ 1-7 and only stopped at 8 because of a lack of a portable solution and I was burned out. While it is true that I have it on the 3DS, I was wary of pickpockets on the train and so I'm now considering taking a rest and just emulating it on the PS2 just because it has a fast-forward feature. --- It's not so cliche anymore when it's happening to you. ... Played DQIII as my first one. But it was many years after it's actual release. I remember being stuck on a certain area when I was younger. Came back to it later as an adult to beat it.
I do admit DQVIII is the game that really made me check out all the other games in the series and now I have beaten all the mainline games except X Online. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Only games we missed out on for the platform were the remake of Monsters 1+2 and the DQ4 remake, which was announced for western release but then Enix of America shut down. --- ... hopefully DQV gets an HD-2D remake or something one day. It's certainly the best of all the Pre-VIII Dragon Quests (actually best of all the pre-XI Dragon Quests)

I want a full blown 3D Remake the style of DQVIII or XI for DQV is they are going the remake route for future games. That game would be behind only Xenogears, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger and Phantasy Star IV for my fully 3D AAA high budget remake of JRPGs wishlist that will probably never happen in our lifetime.
