As someone in the corporate world I can say for an absolute fact that the culture has changed drastically in the last 5 years. No one interacts anymore because its simply not worth the risk of accidentally somehow saying something that can be interpreted by one person some way as offensive.

Like its literally JUST sports and the weather being discussed in the 30 seconds before a meeting starts and thats it.

So yeah no ones gonna say anything offensive, hooray, but were all dead inside.

Already a topic about this and nowhere was he talking about "cancel culture," but you linking to a fucking Nazi rag sure is telling

I see a lot unfunny comedians, I see unfunny TV shows, I see unfunny award shows, I see unfunny movies cause no ones everybodys scared to, like, you know, make a move. You know, thats not a place to be. We should have the right to fail. Because failure is a part of art. You know what I mean? Its the ultimate cancel, but now you got a place where people are scared to talk, thats not especially in America youre scared to talk, but thats what people want, you gotta make adjustments and, you know, lets do it.

He's talking about boring shows that are afraid to take risks with material and not get picked up, not getting canceled. Learn to read.

I remember a while back a number of comedians refused to play college and university shows because of the rise in woke culture. In an industry where nothing is sacred, how can you curate comedy to people who get perpetually offended?

Even if you wouldn't be cancelled for what you said, you can't know that until people try, so it's going to have a chilling effect on speech regardless.

Also that whole argument reminds me of "I'm not against the government spying on citizens because I have nothing to hide", it misses the point

on one hand people who complain the loudest about cancel culture tend to be people with shitty opinions in general and are afraid of facing consequences

but on the other hand twitter users have turned this into something they do for entertainment. rather than actually having the moral high ground they now just target people to mass harass because its fun to them and then they work backwards to justify it.

you know watch this 2 hour long video explaining the issues with the whole thing because i cant explain myself as well as she can

I don't think he used his leverage per se. There are reports that he's been doing creepy s*** since early in his career. It's more like he didnt consider how his status would give him leverage. As far as I know, he never threatened or implied that he would damage his victims' careers.

I know the difference is small, but it's significant.

Entertainers make tons of money off people liking what they're saying. If people don't like what you're saying, then you don't make as much money. I really don't see what's so difficult about this. There is no such thing as cancel culture it's literally just unfettered capitalism.

Really, the only thing thats off the table, culturally, at this juncture and not even entirely is shamelessly punching down for the sheer joy of hurting people. For the sheer excitement and laughter that some people get from causing people pain, from making people uncomfortable, from making people feel excluded. You know, that excitement.
If youre too intimidated to try to do comedy that is deep or provocative, or even a little controversial, without hurting people, then youre not good at what you do. Or maybe youre just insensitive."

Yeah and then you should listen to Marc Marons podcast he did with Mark Normand a couple weeks ago. Maron kind of changed his tune and felt people should be a lot more forgiving to the process of writing a joke. Which isn't to say that he condones punching down exactly, but he acknowledges that there may be ways to tell a joke and make it "ok" that he has never thought of. He acknowledges that there are risks to telling jokes, but consequences should be pretty mild when jokes are in the early phases. It's a bit different if it's a joke that gets recorded for an album though. Also, times change and many comics of the 80's sad tons of real bad stuff. You need to change with the times, but also not necessarily condemn the entirety of the past

If you know Mark Normand at all then you'd know he is pretty strongly anti cancel culture and I don't need to explain anything about him. His views are much less complex lol

@mech_dragon

Comedians have been talking about cancel culture long before right wing politicians tried to take advantage of the term.

No one who says cancel culture isn't real should be taken the least bit seriously. Like yeah Republicans have used the term to rally their voting base to hide their lack of any real beneficial policies, but that doesn't make the entirety of cancel culture not real.

Like how can anyone claim to be discussing in any sort of good faith and claim that no one has ever been cancelled or faced the threat of it?

You get the problem with that, right? The problem is the only evidence of cancel culture you'll accept is from people who are cancelled to the point you can't hear them.

The best you can get if those are your rules are second hand stories, I guess. But there are a fair amount of them. Here's a classic:
