I got a letter last week about an HOA violation related to leaving trash cans out... They included a picture in the letter, but it was a picture of a house down the block instead of mine. I went online to dispute it on Friday and they just removed the violation from my account today.

No. I asked for an explanation and all they would say is that the case was closed. They've removed it from my "Violations" list, so now I don't have any.

imo, they're like landlords only worse. They have zero investment in your property, but have the ability to fuck with you over your property.

For real...I know myself...if I lived in an area with HOA's, i'd be doing petty revenge shit all the time once they started fuckin with me. Glad HOA's are all that common in the northeast.

I know right? I damn near killed some of my grass keeping my trash cans on the grass in the back yard... I've moved them to the small patio to try to see if that patch of grass will come back. But to go through all this to try to stick to the rules and then they tell me that I'm in violation? Because they took a blurry picture of someone else's house and just guessed it was mine, no less?

My HOA once told me I couldn't put an antenna on the roof. I showed them the federal over the air reception rules and they shut up pretty quickly.

For me, the fact that I like this house so much override my feelings about whether I want to deal with an HOA or not. It met all of my requirements, so I chose this one.

I feel the same way when I hear horror stories like this, but there are benefits to the reasonable ones. Like don't get me wrong I'm not gonna chip in $200/mo so some bored retired jackasses can try and fine me for dumb shit like in the OP.

But there are ones I would accept, like ones where your money actually goes to something tangible, like tennis courts or a neighborhood pool or something. And there are ones that do have rules about noise. I'd want one like that as well because I'm a quiet person and don't need someone blaring music late into the night.

Yeah, I think if the HOA fee was $200/month, I wouldn't have picked this house at all. I think my HOA fee is about $26/month, though, so it's not bad.

I wouldn't want to live in one but the benefits are pretty obvious. Generally speaking, HOAs increase property value relative to housing not in HOAs, though I'm not sure if it makes up for the additional fees. Probably just depends

Outside of the antenna issue I really haven't had too much trouble with my HOA. The bylaws were written without punishments, so they're more like suggestions. Our fees are only $240 a year, and they keep the parking lot cleared of snow and the grass cut, so I can't complain too much.
