Wouldn't surprise me if Super Mold Man pulled an Alucard or something and returns to save Rose out of nowhere when she's in a bind during RE9.

I mean beyond the logic of it, it just seems narratively dumb because there was big text at the end that was like THE FATHERS STORY IS OVER or something.

RE is one of my favorite series ever so I do enjoy critiquing and analyzing it, but the game is legit great. I'm super pleased with it and will be replaying it many times.

Final time was 2:25 and I only healed once during the final boss

if you die it just reloads your last checkpoint with the time you had during that checkpoint.

There are certain segments where you have to use something other than the knife (5 bells rooms, shooting the windows for one of the daughters, etc), but as long as it doesn't hurt the enemy it won't count. You can always check it in the Challenges menu anyway. The only two times you're allowed to damage enemies without the knife is the first phase of Heisenberg when you're in the tank (and the final blow when you're in the air) and shooting that last orb during the final boss right at the end.

I really enjoyed it. It has its flaws but I think the critiques come from the series setting such a high bar for itself.

I'm not enjoying it (and there's not much to go in my playthrough). Here are the main sections of the game, at least in my experience thus far:

The outdoor village itself (central hub that connects everything)
Lady Dimitrescu's Castle
Haunted house escape room
Water/swamp area
Ruins that function as enemy stronghold/shooting gallery
Mechanical factory
Chris's section that goes full CoD (I just started this)

Those last five segments - literally everything after Lady D - have been pretty underwhelming. I suppose I credit the dev team for their ambition (these topics are spot-on in assessing RE8 as four or five games in one), but this is a case where the overall package suffers for it.

Baby is nightmare fuel but that area blows. Not gonna repost what I said the other day in the review topic but it kills the pace of the game so much it ends up not being scary which is the only reason it exists :/

Maybe that house is great if that sort of thing is what you want out of this game, but Im here for the RE4 stuff. I dont have any interest in a haunted house simulator

also it weirdly was the least scary part of the game for me, because I was so prepared for it to be scary. I knew some monster had to show up at some point since there were a bunch of hiding places around, but also I didnt have any weapons so there wasnt going to be anything to fight... so I just started turning corners with my eyes closed until the baby showed up.

Finally beat it - the end wasn't bad. Probably much more meaningful for those fans who enjoyed RE7.

I'm gonna try the Knives Out run - is there any way to begin a second playthrough with the Karambit knife immediately, or must I use the standard knife until I reach the merchant?

Everyone asks how Ethan's hands are, but no one asks how that foot is that Jack cut off.

Also I feel like RE8 missed a huge opportunity to have Lady D mock Ethan by saying - "You're right hand comes off?"

The sound and visuals are amazing and it's the first real game that makes me say "this is next gen." It makes RE7 better in hindsight and has me excited to see where RE9 goes from here (away from Chris please I'm begging you).

I'm still struggling to place it in my rankings though.

RE3R Jill is legitimately perfect, amazing and incredible - I dearly hope that game's overall weaker reception doesn't stop her from further appearances in the mainline or even a Revelations-esque title.

They censor violence pretty heavily over there (recurring thing for this series especially of late) but apparently Ethan doesn't even lose his fingers in this version so he has a complete left hand for the whole game!

They also completely remove any indication of him losing his hand to Lady D in the catacombs and block you from looking up when Ethan is tearing himself off the hooks at the start of the castle.

I just like how around 90 minutes seems to be the butter zone for peak RE speedrunning.

Looking at it, RE4's best speedrun is also 1:30, but it relies heavily on glitches.

I still grin like an idiot thinking about beating RE3Make in a hair over an hour. Not only was it short, but it was so damn linear that I was able to do that in like my third run.

RE4 has Ditman, but you need the Striker for that so it really doesn't factor in much on NG runs. NG+ ones yeah, and it shaves like 12 minutes off to get things into the 1:20s.

RE3R was a joke yeah, I'm pretty sure the record is like 48 minutes.
