Do you think Pokémon battles would be legally allowed?

I mean, I haven't heard of a Pokmon dying in battle, but I don't know if that would be enough for the authorities (or even society itself) to allow for Pokmon battles/tournaments.

No.

Potential for legitimate destruction/death.
Could be considered animal cruelty.

Basically this, because in the "Pokemon world" battling is a fundamental part of their culture and life. The whole reason that Pokemon can learn moves and level up is to battle each other. What would Pokemon even do if they were nothing but pets to humans, or wild animals?

But if they were in our real, existing world, I'm sure that people would come up with countless reasons why they shouldn't battle and they should only be our pets.

The entire economy becomes based on Pokmon battles in this scenario.

Maybe in a few thousand years they shut it down but capitalism is going to protect the hell out of that shit.

Hell this isn't even approaching the point of talking about how poke balls are tantamount to slavery.

I'm imagining it being roughly like bull or cock or dog fighting IRL; probably legal in a few countries, probably done underground elsewhere, but generally frowned upon at best

that said I am now imagining pro wrestling with Pokemon and that'd be pretty great

Extremely would be up for debate. In the US at least Pokemon battling would be firmly entrenched with the word "freedom" and people would murder you with their own pokemon before giving up their right to battle.

And since military might would be directly related to controlling the strongest Pokemon...

I think the difference is Pokemon generally seem to have roughly the same level of intelligence as humans, being able to perfectly understand language while also seemingly having logic and reasoning skills. They're capable of consent and choose to fight willingly. I think some of the lore suggests that they can only be caught if they willingly choose to stay in the ball too, getting past the sticky subject of slavery. Just nevermind the coercion part where you beat the shit out of them until they agree to be caught.

That makes the fighting more acceptable, but if Pokemon are intelligent then isn't the whole "doing whatever their owners tell them to" thing basically slavery?

Well yeah, but both the games and anime have shown the Pokemon still have some autonomy, since they can choose to disobey commands. I think the general idea is supposed to be that a Pokemon will only allow itself to be captured if it respects/trusts the trainer (something they apparently determine based on how badly the trainer kicks their ass in battle). And once the Pokemon has accepted the trainer, that trust and respect means it wants to follow their commands in battle. Because these creatures, while very intelligent, are also bloodthirsty animals who only exist for the thrill of battle.

Poke Balls probably also have some mind control element that the government doesn't want you to know about.

Imagine Wrestlemania going something like:

Machamp: Machamp.
The Rock: (Turns around) What did you say to me?
Machamp: Ma... champ.

And Female Gardevoirs as hostesses, of course.

Either that or Pokemon would've been hunted to extinction to protect human society from the bands of roving animals able to manifest wildfires, floods, earthquakes, and lightning storms at will.

Basically there's a shared culture between human and Pokemon that makes the relationship in the games possible.
