IMO the price action an hour ago on GME probably was not a "dump" because any fund that sold like that would be acting quite stupidly driving the price down on themselves before they sold all their shares. The way it was going they could have sold the shares sold during that block of time north of $300 pretty easily by gradually selling. They aren't stupid enough to submit a huge market sell order.

Unless they are aiming to shake out retail investors, accumulate and dump again

A move that ridiculous is usually a psychological ploy of some sort. You see it all the time in smaller caps. They just don't have as much eyeballs on them.

Well, either way, judging by the volume, whatever it was, it didn't work. And why would it - GME shareholders have seen this so many times already.

Like the theory is the mass sell hits some moonroof stop losses. So while you don't maximize your profit from the sale you do maximize the amount of paper hands you shake loose and disruption to investor confidence and can often buy back in for cheaper because of the stop-losses you had hit

But how many people in GME actually have stop losses set? I'll say the first time this kind of thing happened, from $160 to $60, it was pretty scary. The second time, from $480 to $120, I wanted to buy more but couldn't because my brokerage wasn't allowing it. This time I bought more.

If you are a fund doing this, you are also going to be competing with everyone else who's seen this pattern and is scrambling to buy at $185.

Yes it mostly bounced back because the hedges bought it back too. This always happens with smaller stocks too.

Sunroof isn't wrong. Ive also toyed with the idea.

The problem being that oftentimes the thing causing the stock going up is volume related, so even if you did know its not certain you could just put infinite money into it which probably stops hedge funds from really going all in.

That's not a stop loss, that's a stop gain. And it would have worked for you with GME if you had bought at $300 and sold for, say, $330.

As long as your broker allows limit orders the morning of, you're usually fine to get in on the good price.

You can just set a limit order for the most you're actually willing to pay. If it fills below that, great. If it opens above that, you didn't want to buy it at that price anyway.

I don't think anyone really knows, other than maybe some people at some hedge funds or maybe at the NYSE/Citadel/etc. I just know that (1) something like this has happened several times now, and (2) the total number of shares traded during it was quite low. The short ladder attack theory is as good as any.

I don't know about the "ladder" portion of it, but selling large quantities of a stock in a short time to drive the price down is definitely a real thing and a very very old tactic. The idea would be to trigger stop loss orders or margin calls for longs and then buy the stock for cheap. Unless you actually catch a lot of longs either panic selling or hitting their stop losses or margin limits, it usually hurts the person doing it, as they end up selling stock for cheap. There are also some questions about legality.

Of course not everything is manipulation and people have been way too eager to call any downward movement manipulation, but there are nonetheless 3 major downward movements in GME that really stand out - on 1/25, 1/28, and today, in each case plummeting by 50%+ within a very short time (just a few minutes of actual trading time in between halts). We apparently halted 6 times in 31 minutes today so most of the move may have happened within 60 seconds of actual trading time.

Well the one on 1/28 was manufactured by the brokerages stopping purchases and only allowing sales. This was just... Like so unfathomable and laughable.

Also the amount of FUD posting that started immediately on WSB by new accounts tells me we have to be really hurting them or else they wouldn't attack this on so many fronts.

My explanation for why there was such a large dip:

Volume was WAY too low to cause such a huge drop in price, so I asked in GME Megathread Part 1, "How could that large of a dip happen, with such a low volume?", also pointing out that IBorrowDesk didn't report any new shorts, during the time of the dip. I didn't realize that when shorts are borrowed, the borrower has 3 days to use them, or they have to be returned. Shorts HAVE been borrowed, in large numbers, over the past few days. That means that hedgies were borrowing shorted shares, iron handing them, borrowing more, and then they released them all at once (or in large chunks because of the halts). That allowed them to tank the price in a very direct and focused manner, say $160 in a matter of 20 minutes (and that includes the halt times). I believe this was an attempt to trigger stop losses and scare day-traders into selling. The immediate rebound and the fact that THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED TO AMC, AT THE SAME TIME, seems to corroborate this theory.

Thanks to /u/_Exordium
, for explaining this rule for borrowing shorts!

220@$125.61 average

TLDR: Since there has been millions of shares shorted over the past few days, and they have 3 days to use the shorted shares, I think that the dip was caused by hedgies hoarding shorts to release all at once. Thus tanking the price and triggering stop losses and scaring day-traders into paperhanding. Also, exact same tactic used on AMC, at the exact same time.

This seems legit actually
