The exception to Impeachment means that you can't use a pardon to save him from being impeached or reverse it, not that you can't pardon the things he is/could be impeached for.

Like many other things regarding pardons, that's still an open legal question AFAIK.

I happen to agree with your interpretation of it that it only prevents a pardon from preventing Congress from impeaching and removing an official rather than preventing the underlying offense from being pardoned but I don't think it's settled law.

Just like how it's an open question over whether a President can pardon themselves. On its face it seems absurd, but we don't know! (But we may very well find out soon)

Hell, Ford preemptively pardoning Nixon for any crimes he "may have" committed regarding Watergate was let go so it's softly assumed that apparently you can do that but it also has not been tested.

The limits and exceptions of the pardon power have not really faced judicial/legal tests. We know the courts have ruled the recipient of a pardon can reject it (but not so for a commutation) but I think that's about it.

You know, I wonder if this is the spike that finally kills the current Republican Party or if they will be able to pivot away from Trump.

early polls showed half of republicans approved of storming the capitol, which sounds horrendous, but Republicans just lost the election at full strength. If even 10% of republicans fall off from this they are never winning a presidency again.

Going to be a really interesting two years to see what happens

I keep getting scared by all these people claiming Trump really won the election, but then they make such a big deal out of violent Antifa/BLM riots and label Biden a communist and/or a Chinese stooge.

These people are hopeless. I swear they somehow think mainstream news media are the only reason people hate Trump so much. As I barely follow news or politics and still hear a lot of bad about Trump, well I'm just going to have to deny that bigtime.

And before you even bring it up, as far as I'm concerned the person people mass blocked should be ostracized from the board entirely. He's been awful from day 1 and it is not remotely limited to politics. Even the worst longtime posters here have or do contribute something of value outside of these topics at some point.

As far as I'm aware, yes, it's real. It's from the wikileaks stuff that dropped pre-election in 2016 (which obviously helped Trump even more).

Maybe the strategy would have worked if other things hadn't happened along the way, but they were playing with fire.

I think it is too. At this point, supposing Trump won in 2024....hard to see how he/some of his supporters don't take that as a mandate for mobocracy. Which means that it's just too dangerous. Which means he'll lose the center and apolitical voters. And he'll lose 1%er conservatives who'll go on being rich and powerful no matter who's in office, unless possibly if it's a populist mob, but they don't have very many votes, being less than 1% of the population, after all. The important thing is the center and the apolitical. And mob rule by force of arms is worse than a Democrat.
