Finally finished In Bruge and Thoroughbreds!

In Bruge: 8/10

I'm not super thoughtful and deep/have a hard time finding the theme and symbolism so have no idea how people got to the heaven/hell aspect. But that's something I'm used to. Overall I enjoyed it. Seeing Ray feel bad and how sad he was made me do a 180 on how I felt about him. Ken was great, I loved him. The movie got 10x better when Harry came into the picture. Him and Ken talking at the table and at the bell tower was definitely my favorite part(s)

Thoroughbreds 9/10

The camera work was amazing. I loved all the close up and plain shots that the movie had. It worked so well. The music accompanying it did an amazing job setting the atmosphere. All of the actors did phenomenal with their more emotionless/straight faced shots. Anton Yelchin was superb, and it makes me sad that this is his final film. Also, again I like the idea where there is no real comeuppance for the main character. Though I never quite understood why she wanted to kill Mark.

I'm planning to watch Lost in Translation tonight or tomorrow, but you know how that goes.

there's a scene where they're looking at a painting and talk about Purgatory as well as other religious references and then you can look at the attitude of the two main characters towards the city for the heaven/hell aspect

Lost in Translation

what's that opening shot about?

i have this marked as last watched in 2010 and yeah it's kind of hard to say things about it. i recall when i first watched it, it left me a little confused (still liked it) and i think a part of me put off rewatching this for a while because i was hoping for this grand revelation the next time i did. well that didn't really happen but there's kind of a personal shame the film evokes in me hence the difficulty.

But the city still comes out looking amazing, it still has one of my favorite usages of music with My Bloody Valentine, and that initial commercial filming scene with the interpreter is great. as someone whose first exposure to Bill Murray was OSMOSIS JONES i can see the subtle aspects of his performance this time around and it's great. Scarlett Johansson is good too. kind of mindblowing she was 17 when she shot this.

one "new" thing this time was honestly was how distracted i got by how much of the l/r thing kept being brought up

i had it at an 8 and that's going to stay. probably a lighter 8 though.

so in the ending where Bob whispers something to Charlotte, i read that there later emerged a clip with the audio turned up just enough to make out what he is actually saying to her. the funny thing is that even in this instance where it's phrased like "WHAT HE SAID FINALLY REVEALED" there's like THREE different takes on what he said because it's not perfectly clear lol

but yeah i do agree with other takes that it's kind of missing the point to try to figure out what he said

rewatching it isn't a requirement if you've already seen it before.

if you do want to hold off, i can move you to the bottom of the first rotation so we don't have to check in every week and other people can prepare beforehand.

otherwise i would have just moved you to the bottom of the list.

Vote for any and all movies you would be interested in seeing for the next week (~Feb. 5th, NA). The movie with the most overall votes wins. You may rank your votes from most preferred to least (do not rank movies you would not vote for) so I don't have to @ you back in case of a tie. If you do not intend to vote and are fine with whatever wins, please reply with "No Vote" so there is as little of a waiting period as possible. If you list multiple movies in your vote but you are not ranking them, please include "Not Ranked" along with your vote (I will assume they are ranked otherwise). Please vote by Friday, Feb. 5th, 8:00 PM EST/5:00 PM PST

  2. If that is not possible or it is still tied after that, nominator will have the tiebreak vote.

amazon prime does have two versions of Midsommar but one is the 4K UHD version. they're both the same length.

i would argue that it's better to watch the theatrical cut rather than no version at all. But I will mark it differently depending on which version you watch because it was specified in this case if it wins.

I'm going to get around to Lost in Translation yet. I thought for sure that once I was done watching Alice in Borderland last week I'd have plenty of time to watch the next movie without a television series taking up the majority of my desired screen-staring time, but I've now fallen down a Taskmaster hole and that thing is apparently on season 11 or something.

I love how Kung Fu Panda is part of the conversation at the same time as the rest of these movies.

None of the movies mentioned are things I'd pass on for not wanting to see the content. Parents letting me watch horror movies from as young as I can remember to over two decades of mostly the worst the internet has to offer has pretty much desensitized me to just about everything, so there's no shock or curiosity towards what these movies can do or get away with now. And after you take that away I struggle to find a reason to want to watch them as I don't think I'd enjoy them through any other lens.

Yeah this is pretty much me too. My mom is probably a bigger horror fan than I am, so I was raised on horror movies, and she is always the one introducing me to the more intense stuff!

I do think the extreme French films have a lot of depth to them, they're more than just blood and gore to me.
