also read another take on it with underwear analysis where it reflects her emotional/physical state
honestly I'm gonna argue a far different take and suggest it starts on ScarJo's butt for no other reason than aesthetic appeal

definitely a possibility but i would rather have it be anything else simply because "just because" is the least interesting answer lol

but yeah it's certainly feasible that I have to resign myself to the idea that Coppola herself didn't "mean" anything by it. but i think even if a certain effect wasn't intended, that doesn't make make the effect it had on other viewers invalid. i think there's a few instances where complete misinterpretation is possible but i wouldn't say this is one of those.

the only thing i could find from Coppola about it was that it was based off of John Kacere paintings

I gotta vote for Five Easy Pieces

Thoroughbreds

I don't think this quite lived up to the quality of Heathers/American Psycho but I can see why that was the comparison point. The leads forged an interesting chemistry as they batted a ball of sociopathic tendencies between them, seemingly transferring Amanda's energy to Lily as the movie progresses (perhaps Lily saw herself in Amanda's reflection?). Apparently Cooke and Taylor-Joy can execute Command Cry, that scene of them having a weep-off on the couch was impressive and kind of creepy. And hilariously punctuated by evil stepdad's confused interruption. The meta aspect of them watching a movie here makes me wonder if there's some empathy test going on but it's played like it's black comedy so who knows.

At first I was inclined to take a Fight Club reading, like Amanda is an alter-ego enabling Lily and isn't really there. That doesn't totally hold up since there's a few times when characters do acknowledge both of them at once. But I do think Lily/Amanda fit into an archetypal ego/id pairing that go down a dark path in a cautionary tale of self-actualization.

Yelchin was good but his sub-plot ended up being filler, the logic of which had me scratching my head. Their plan for not getting caught is hiring a two-bit drug dealer to crash through a window to announce his arrival to kill the guy? And on top of it they decide to blackmail the drug dealer? I mean it's not like I know how I would get away with murder but that just seems like it would go wrong a dozen ways. Like, the best outcome I would expect is p90x stepdad ninja-strikes your boy from the shadows and then goes on a 5-mile run.

I would have liked more scenes with Mark (the mark for the kill is what they were going for I'd guess). I got a kick out of his whole aggressively fit, Ben Stiller in Heavyweights kind of antagonism. He was just a little too periphery for killing him to make sense, but I guess it's not supposed to be justified. I suppose the 'no smoking' scene kind of suggests he's right about some things, even. I did like that he had an off-screen presence with the rowing machine, it's actually relatable that the constant pulsing would drive a lot of resentment.

Overall I thought there would be more to do with horses.

Can anyone confirm that the conversation between Bill Murray and the Japanese director towards the start of Lost in Translation isn't supposed to have subs for the Japanese dialogue? I assume it's intentional.

I'm going with 7/10 for Lost in Translation. Movie felt like it was older than 2003 to me, though it might have something to do with not having seen anything with Bill Murray in a starring role since the 90s. I think the last movie I've seen him in was Space Jam?

Also, even though I'm now certain it was intentional, it always annoys me when there's foreign dialogue in a movie and it's not subbed.

Lost in Translation:

Something about this movie doesn't really click for me. Bill Murray and SJ are both great actors but they never really felt as compatible as the film tried to make them out to be. It didn't help that they (Murray's character particularly) weren't super likeable, though that might just be the cynical anti-rich person in me. Didn't really sympathize much with the old, famous, rich actor cheating on his wife while bored in Japan. The culture gap was interesting, but only to a certain point, and watching Murray mock the Japanese cooks didn't help the case. It was a really well-shot and well constructed film about characters I didn't really care about.

45 Years (2015)

I was interested in the tragedy that happened 45+ years ago with Katya, but then it became just depressing to me. It was a very realistic take on human emotion. Was Katya pregnant? I mean, yeah, if I was Kate Id be feeling some things, too. Especially after not having kids together themselves. I guess it becomes a snowball effect on their entire 45 years of marriage. Was Geoff only interested in her because her name was Kate? But whatever, its in the past. You had 45 good years together, thats a hell of an accomplishment. Loved the song they played during their first dance at the anniversary party, but that ending was brutal. I'm optimistic they hash it out and make it to 50.

It had some great shots, but wasn't really my cup of tea, to be honest. 5/10

45 Years

what a morbid opening almost straight off talking about frozen bodies

and you can see all the small doubts sprouting up in Kate from the beginning as soon as she sees Geoff's reaction to the news. i was immediately thinking about missed opportunities, regrets, feelings of inadequacy and the fear that you were simply settled for. and being replaced by a fucking BODY and a ghost and you can't do anything to stop it.

the morning after the "confrontation" scene where Geoff is trying to make up for it, it just stands out more how forced everything seems and the party is just a big reminder of that, as one giant spectacle to show everyone.

once the party started, i was just waiting for things to go terribly wrong like he says the wrong name during the speech (it wasn't until then that i noticed the similarity in names lol). But it turned out even worse! that FUCKING DANCE SCENE. i just wanted it to cut because i was feeling so fucking terrible but it goes oooonnnnn. terrifying. when you spend 45 years nurturing something and now it's all as Kate said, TAINTED, and there's no starting over here.

about the names, i took it as that Katya was the foreign, "exotic" possibility that Geoff could have and he ended up "settling" for plain Kate in Kate's mind.

really fantastic performance from the leads.

watched 45 Years tonight

I don't want to be TOO harsh on this, because there WERE good aspects, but... holy shit this is one of the most boring movies I've ever seen.

I'm reminded a lot of Phantom Thread, which was also acclaimed but bored me to tears despite the objectively great performances and dark implications of the story. I mean, I get it. I think this would've made for a fantastic 10-minute short film. After 30 minutes of almost nothing happening, I wanted to shut it off and do anything else but fought through it. After an hour, at which point they've had like they're 8th silent or near-silent awkwardly-sound-mixed car ride, I really had to convince myself to keep watching.

And the thing is, there clearly are smart minds at work. There are good shots and good performances and a BRUTALLY powerful final scene, but there's also so, so, so, so much poorly edited filler with that serves no real purpose but to stall the narrative while reinforcing the same repetitive character interactions.

And to make it worse, I really just didn't care much about the characters to begin with. Both of the pair is kind of in the wrong here. Geoff sneaks around behind his wife's back, and I can't even be too mad at him about it as Kate makes no real effort to help her husband process this devastatingly tragic and traumatizing news he's just received.

I just can't bring myself to enjoy this one. I feel nothing more from watching the achingly long hour and a half than I think I would've had I just read the plot description and then watched the last like 10 minutes.

4/10

anyway i realized that for me i could just keep going and the list is way longer than i originally thought. i guess when i first started to watch a lot of movies, i started with a lot of "best of" lists and obviously everything on there is very well regarded, so it's no surprise i didn't love all of them. there's also the matter of just not "getting it" and not being in the right frame of mind but i'm not exactly rushing to see these again. also i just watched differently when i saw some of those for the first time so it's entirely possible i will change my mind entirely. although in the case with Lost in Translation where i felt more-or-less similarly, maybe i won't change my mind that much. in fact i think like one of the only movies where i significantly changed my opinion on post-rewatch years later was Jennifer's Body.

already mentioned Anchorman, Guardians of the Galaxy and Scott Pilgrim before in this topic. i rewatched Scott Pilgrim relatively recently (like months rather than years) and i think i would honestly dislike it more if i rewatched it now lol.

btw all the movies i mentioned are like 5-6/10 range so obviously not terrible. i think i did give a lot of them like technical points? but if i rewatched them today i might be like fuck that. this doesn't apply to GotG either. i walked out of that thinking like 4/10 but i kept thinking about how absolutely miserable i was during it so it just settled as a 2 in my mind.

on 45 Years

i kind of skipped around to remind myself of all the scenes and i don't really remember feeling bored or uninterested throughout it, maybe the one early scene where they're talking on the bed. there's also that one car ride scene whre the radio is on and the lyrics to the song that's playing is "ehhh" but i liked the vast majority of it. like i said earlier, i was into it 10 minutes in when you see her face and all the possible mental pathways that suddenly revealed themselves. like, it was kind of relateable to when i heard some news and i start thinking about like one hundred different things and possible consequences and just can't run from my thoughts. and in her case, it's just so much heavier because of all the time that's gone into it.

i also really liked that it's about an older couple. like obviously that's the premise and aside from the fact that fewer films focus on older people, i appreciated seeing the parts of their lives that they're used to. and then they start talking about how they barely have any pictures and only their memories; try to have a similar moment as in their youths with the dance and the sex but it's bittersweet because of the inescapable reminder of the physical issues old age comes with. and you know, it's obviously not an unexplored theme but it's one that gets me every time because whenever i look in the mirror it's like "when the fuck did i get so old." But she thought she was comfortable with who she was and knew what their relationship was and all the mundanities, had made peace with it. i'm rambling but fuck man. heavy shit.
