I think the least funny has to go to either Disaster Movie or Movie 43. Both were irredeemably terrible.
i KNEW this was going to happen so i intended to put a mention about this but my edit was not in time lol. and i def was thinking of Movie 43 too thinking about this question but forgot to mention that

i texted a friend about Movie 43 while watching saying how it was the worst thing i've ever seen and she started watching it. she texted me back later saying she thought it was funny.

that is deeply upsetting

and it's hard to even think of a movie that can compare as far as badness, at least as far as comedies go

OH

Sausage Party

I. FUCKING. Hated. Sausage Party. It was so unbearable to get through. I dont think I laughed once which is amazing because I usually like most of the cast. It was like they thought hey what about toy story but for food haha but then just didnt write the script until right before they started filming. At some point a couple years ago I was keeping a running ranking of all the movies I was watching and Sausage Party was second to last.

There is something about a bad comedy to me that makes it so much more painful than a bad movie of any other genre.

my answer would be the aforementioned Animal House, Anchorman or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

i'm sure there are people who like the latter two here though lol

Guardians 2 wasn't like straight comedy but I remember being in the theater and people were cracking up the whole time at TASERFACE and I AM GROOT and it was the day after my birthday (or was?) and tickets were fucking $18 and i felt like the fucking Grinch because it was the most miserable theater experience i ever had

note about the "watchrate requirement for recommending movies"

i said "subject to change" from the beginning and i did change it like a week ago in the spreadsheet but i guess i never mentioned it in the topic so here it is: You must maintain a 50% watchrate to recommend movies when it is your turn.

reason there's a watchrate requirement in the first place is simply because i think it's more fair to have more active members get to recommend. i said 60% initially because i was thinking further down the line when we had a bigger list of movies but there's a lot of awkward percentages in the beginning so i lowered it to 50% at least for now.

there's a "Stats" page in the spreadsheet where i have watchrate percentages. if you mention you watched a movie during nominations or in any other post, i mark it as watched for you. you do not have to give ratings for it to count. you do not have to rewatch a movie during the week it's recommended to count if you have already seen it (obviously welcome to though). you can have a 0% watchrate, and then say you watched a bunch of the movies the day before your turn to recommend and that's fine too. and again, this is only for recommending movies during your turn (order in spreadsheet). like if you're 10th in the order, that's ten weeks to watch five movies assuming you haven't seen any of the 10 before.

rewatched In Bruges tonight

I say rewatched but it's been a long time since I've seen the film. I remember that I liked the film a lot, and I remembered basic things like the characters, the premise, the tone, etc. but I couldn't actually remember what ends up happening in the back half of the film.

Needless to say, there's a good reason I thought as highly of it as I did; the movie is excellent. The movie raises the question of "how dark can a dark comedy get and still be considered a comedy?" The answer is: VERY dark. Like REALLY goddamn dark.

The writing is so aggressive and cheeky and really just funnier than it has any right to be. So much of the comedy comes from the awkward mix of respect and malevolence between people who've made their careers as killers, but who still recognize each other as friends and associates. The city itself feels so unique. It's dreamlike and beautiful and also boring and ugly, depending on the day and the perspective.

It tries to be a drama, a comedy, a thriller, an action crime piece, and it succeeds at all of them.

The film gets an easy 10/10 from me.

I need to rewatch Seven Psychopaths, because I barely remember it but In Bruges and Three Billboards are both top notch movies

I think I'll give In Bruges an 8? Kind of teetering on the edge but not sure I can justify tipping it over.

Everything involving Ken, Ray and Harry I loved, but whenever any of the other characters were involved I found myself kind of wishing they would hurry up and get back to the meat of the story.

Also, with no explanation for why he was killed outside of guesses based on what some of his brethren have been up to over the years in real life, I kind of felt bad for that priest. Ray is suicidal over killing the child but the seemingly innocent priest is just another day at the office? Come on, now. Shed at least one tear over the poor bastard.

it was his job so it really was "another day at the office" lol

i presume he'd put to rest any qualms he had about killing potentially innocent people if it was his job when he decided on that line of work

considering the only information we were shown that could be related to that is Harry's strict "code" concerning kids, I would just assume that that had something to do with the reason for the hit on the priest.

oh wait there was apparently a deleted scene about that

from imdb trivia:
In a deleted scene, Ray and Ken are lying in their beds discussing Ray's murder of the priest and the little boy. Ray ponders over why he was sent to kill the priest, guessing it was likely pedophilia. Ken counters that Harry was behind a land-buying deal that the priest opposed. These two explanations are coincidentally two different motives that are suggested for the archbishop's murder in Primal Fear (1996).

In Bruges: 9/10

***SPOILERS***

This is the 3rd or 4th viewing of this one for me. Excellent film. Martin McDonagh's follow-up movie is just slightly better, as Snake mentioned, but the story in this one is really strong. A minor gripe is that the dialogue comes off as *slightly* juvenile compared to Seven Psychopaths, or Three Billboards .....more # movies coming? hmm....

Anyway, great great movie. The 3 main actors all killed it, all memorable performances in their own right. May have been slightly influenced by Tarantino but some of this goes even beyond Tarantino's skill set.

I'm halfway through In Bruge, gonna finish it tonight.

So far I'm liking it a lot. I love Ken and Ray's interactions. There are a few great moments. Love Rays reaction to things. Also really liked Harry's reaction to Ray not liking Bruge. Anyway, despite it being a good movie it's not really a funny movie? Like I've only experienced a few funny moments in the 50ish minutes I've watched.

As for the unfunniest movies...
Gringo, Happytime Murders, A Serious Man are the three I can think of that I never laughed once.

so obvious follow-up question. What's the unfunniest (though at least somewhat intended to be) movie you've ever seen?

hard mode: you cannot answer with any Adam Sandler comedy, Movie 43, any of the parody Movies (e.g. Date Movie, Disaster Movie, etc.) or any movie made by a Youtuber

Easy. Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser.

Joe Dirt isn't the funniest movie, but it has a memorable spark of life and humanity that allows for a somewhat empathetic underdog protagonist. Joe Dirt 2 is when you take Joe Dirt, have him acutely aware of how **** he and his life is, any potentially funny joke is marred by a deep dark yawning maw of depression on the face of the character, and a dearth lack of plot or anything potentially funny. Worst movie I've watched.

...

Does it still count if there's no Adam Sandler, but it's still a Happy Madison Production? No? Dammit.

Meet Dave? Ghost Dad? The Tim Allen Shaggy Dog? Baby Geniuses? Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2? The Underclassman? A Thousand Words? Caddyshack II?

Gotta vote for Killing of a Sacred Deer, one I've been meaning to watch for a while. I'll get to In Bruges later today.

As for consistently funny movies I think plenty are never transcendentally hilarious but consistently hit their mark. Raising Arizona is solidly funny all the way through. Black Dynamite, Austin Powers, Airplane!, and Loaded Weapon 1 are pitch-perfect spoofs, and I think the Adam West Batman gets funnier with every new gritty iteration of the character. Dr. Strangelove and The Apartment have consistently effective black comedy but aren't necessarily laugh-out-loud funny. Swiss Army Man is just a giant fart joke but it had me laughing most of the time (which maybe says more about me but damnit it was a well-executed fart joke)

The unfunniest comedy that comes to mind is Police Academy and it blows my mind they made seven of those sons of bitches. People were just gobbling that shit up in the 80's!

This is an interesting batch of movies. There's a fantastical bend that they all have in common somehow (except Guardians).

I actually think the Guardians trailer looks *amazing* - but I already know about this films terrible reception. I wonder what actually goes wrong - are the effects much worse than they seem in the trailer? I think the character designs, landscapes, and action all look great - a lot more interesting than the average Hollywood CGI movie which is very unusual to find from other producers of live action. Is the writing and acting just terrible? I feel like a halfway decent script would be enough to make this a fun watch if the effects hold up from the trailer... I'm not really big on watching bad movies though, so i'll pass on voting it.

Thoroughbreds is my vote. This movie looks great.

As for the most consistently funny movie - that's an easy Scott Pilgrim for me. My favourite kind of story is typically one with a strong character driven plot that takes itself at least somewhat seriously with some big emotional highs that can seamlessly weave in comedy without taking anything away from the moment. I often say that I love it when a movie can make me laugh and then make me cry. Scott Pilgrim is pretty much the perfect movie in this regard.

In general, I like the media I consume to be enjoyable or "fun". I do think art should be challenging in some way but i don't think most of the time that means it has to be a purely uncomfortable experience, which is what I find with a movie like Mother. I don't mind trying these kinds of things occasionally but they aren't what I would seek out on average. But on the flip side, I'm not big on stories that don't take the characters or subject matter seriously enough. It should have a something with substance that it's driving at.

I think my top 10 and my recommendations all reflect this mindset. Or maybe not idk.

I actually was really hyped before the movie before it came out, it was essentially supposed to be Russia's answer to the Avengers but was looking really impressive given its shockingly small budget

It's definitely worth a watch though, one way or the other
