yea. i suggested 3-5 at first and i think that might be good unless anyone has objections. maybe even 2-5? we'll see how people feel as it goes on. i feel like that offers enough variety to account for different tastes which works better for bigger groups. not like there will be any genre restrictions or the like on recommendations though. completely up to the user.

Yep, the former!

I watched it for the first time last year while following along with a podcast I really like, Next Picture Show. They pair a new movie with an older release, then discuss them and look for connections. I thought their discussion of Safe was really good. It's here:

https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/FLM2375047009?selected=FILM4782556976

The movie they paired it with was Swallow.

After I also watched it with the commentary available on the Criterion Channel and some of the supplements they have on Criterion release, like a really good talk between Moore and Todd Haynes... which I was about to link but apparently it's not on the Channel anymore. Boo!

Mother (2009)

This has been on my radar for a while, the last Bong Joon-ho movie I watched resonated with me with his great storytelling and awesome angle shots that drew me in and made me want to find out where it was all going. Like playing with a matryoshka doll on a rollercoaster ride - there are so many twists, turns, and layers to his films. I also really do appreciate the performances in scenes where there are no jump cuts. This was a beautifully shot film. One of my favorite scenes is where the mother is trying to navigate through a cluttered room with a possible murder weapon after watching her son's best friend have sex with a minor. This gets pretty dark the more you keep watching.

This movie also brought up questions about certain medicines and acupuncture therapy, like can a needle really help a woman get pregnant or even clear depression or bad thoughts and memories. Bong's directing makes me rub my temples trying to remember what it was that he was trying to tell me, and I often get those oh moments. And like Parasite, Im sure there are some things I missed on first viewings, but the themes he throws at you as you watch it unfold is like poetry. From the opening scene in the field, a strange lady dancing with no care, and then you find out why in a powerful ending when she pokes that needle into her thigh to make all her thoughts go away, as the music starts up and she begins to dance again.

I stopped and thought about the opening and ending scenes. On the bus, she started dancing after her acupuncture. In the opening, she was dancing without the acupuncture as she had forgotten her needle kit in the burning house. Probably thinking too much into it but I thought that was interesting.

Do you have a public or school library card? As kate mentioned earlier, kanopy is a service that partners with libraries and offers a wide variety of movies on there for free. Mother is available on the service if your library system has it.

If you're comfortable with using other means, I have a couple invites to a private movie tracker.

They cycle movies in and out pretty aggressively as part of their effort to have a guided, curated selection that resembles a film fest. They program and pair movies for every single day of the month and have multiple collections in spotlight every month. This month the big ones are their spotlight on Afrofuturism and Japanese noir.
