I thought I did thanks to Yakuza 0 but actually I really don't.

Thanks to Akagi and Kaiji.....no. Good lord, those rules vanished pretty hard afterward, as it turns out if one doesn't play the game, one won't retain the rules.

I learnt how to play it in Yakuza 0 but have a hard time remembering certain winning conditions. If i were to play it in real life i'd struggle.

I have a vague idea of how to play Riichi but I'd be in trouble if I had to play IRL without the rules programmed in. I also don't really understand furiten or scoring, or have all the yaku memorized.

I play on Mahjong Soul reasonably often and think I'm pretty good. Though I'm not totally confident on scoring.

Well enough to get by in the Yakuza games, but I don't know any of the advanced strategies and techniques that would help me play against actual experienced players. Plus there's no square button to push in real life to show me any winning conditions that I've overlooked.

Playing in person would be hard for me too, there's all this setup that seems difficult to do, or at least time-consuming, without an automatic table.

Taught myself thanks to Kaiji's Minefield Mahjong. Would be completely lost on how scoring works if I ever played in person.

oh yeah this is actually worth noting

I'd be quite lost with Chinese/Hong Kong/etc rules because even though it's fundamentally and basically the same there are enough differences that I would get super thrown off.

Several years ago I messed around in a Japanese SNES mahjong game (or it might have been PC-98, I don't remember) and kind of figured it out then. But I've forgotten a lot of it.

Reasonably well, yes. There are still some more obscure yaku that I need to remind myself of though, and I'm completely helpless when it comes to scoring, but there are calculators for that!

Chii: Taking a sequence from the person to the left of you.
Pon: Taking a triple from anyone.
Kan: Declaring 4 of a kind, reveals a dora tile from the wall. Taking the tile from an opponent reveals the dora tile after you play your next tile, having a natural (closed) kan reveals it before.

not really. i watched Akagi and i've played a couple games but both were like 10-15 years ago and i didn't fully understand it even then. and i don't remember for sure but those were probably two different versions considering Akagi is Japanese and i was playing in person with Chinese people.

Oh yeah I know very little about calculating scoring.

Luckily you really don't need to to play unless you're doing it manually IRL and even then they have apps and stuff for that these days.

I've been bouncing between Mahjong Soul and Tenhou for about a year and a half now. Basically quit Doman Mahjong because of long queues and it being hard to even get a game with 4 people who won't leave.

Picked up enough about scoring that I should be able to get through a physical game, though I would probably need a scoring table for very uncommon hands, and I still have trouble with complicated single suit waits. Was going to hit up a meetup to get some physical play in before covid.

Hime Mahjong has been teasing an English release for what feels like a really long time now. Not that you really need to be able to read to play, but it sure would be nice.
