Is there a new PreCure series every year?

Every year for nearly two decades.

2004 = Futari Wa Precure
2005 = Futari Wa Precure Max Heart (sequel to above)
2006 = Futari Wa Precure Splash Star (new series despite the name)
2007 = Yes Precure 5
2008 = Yes Precure 5 GoGo (sequel to above)
2009 = Fresh Precure (the start of the "modern" Precure formula)
2010 = Heartcatch Precure (the first Precure series to get noticed outside of Japan and start developing a western fanbase)
2011 = Suite Precure
2012 = Smile Precure (also localized/dubbed on Netflix under the name Glitter Force, decent dub if you prefer watching dubbed, but the sub is still better)
2013 = Doki Doki Precure (also localized/dubbed on Netflix under the name Glitter Force Doki Doki, but don't watch this dub, it's awful)
2014 = Happiness Charge Precure
2015 = Go Princess Precure
2016 = Maho Girls Precure
2017 = Kira Kira Precure A La Mode
2018 = Hugtto Precure
2019 = Star Twinkle Precure
2020 = Healin' Good Precure
2021 = Tropical Rouge Precure

Each individual series is 45-50 episodes and (aside from the two sequel seasons early on and Hugtto Precure featuring a few special cameos to celebrate the 15th anniversary) features an entirely new cast and story that's completely isolated from all the others. The franchise is built so that you can jump into almost any of the different series and have a full, fun experience without being intimidated by the total size of the franchise.

If you're interested in giving Precure a shot, I would personally recommend either Heartcatch, Smile, or Go Princess as a starting point because those three are generally considered among the best overall while also being particularly newcomer-friendly. I started with Heartcatch myself, and I know someone else here (I believe it was Spidey) watched Smile as their first. You could also pick up Tropical Rouge when it starts airing in a couple of months and watch that week by week, possibly alongside binging one of the three I mentioned above.

Oh, there's plenty of endearing characters in every single one of the series. There are some common archetypes that get used fairly often, but they still mix up the character dynamics every year and create something new. The main selling point of the Precure franchise that sets it apart from other magical girl franchises is that it has a lot more focus on combat (punches, kicks, martial arts, energy attacks, even occasionally swords) but while still being cute and lighthearted instead of dark and edgy like Madoka Magica.

To put it simply: Precure is basically the love child of Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z.

No, this release is for an 8-episode TV series that came later, and that one-off OVA was a separate project with no story connection to this series.

https://myanimelist.net/anime/11285/Black%E2%98%85Rock_Shooter_TV

And yes, it's based on a Vocaloid song. That song is actually used as the OP for the anime, and you can hear it in the clip I posted.

It's a bizarre, disjointed franchise where it feels like none of those installments even take place in the same universe, much less are directly connected in any meaningful way. The title character herself is the only constant across all of them. Dead Master shows up in both the OVA and TV series as well, but the story and her involvement is completely different across the two different installments.

Black Rock Shooter feels less like an official franchise and more like a series of wild fanfictions starring someone's edgy Vocaloid OC that somehow ended up being accepted as official... which, in the end, is pretty much exactly what the franchise is. But it somehow works.

Decided to pick up an airing show for a change (even though I think the season is almost over) and watched the first episode of Talentless Nana.

I already had it spoiled that she was evil/killed people but I didn't expect the seeming MC to die. I thought it would be more set up like she doesn't kill him right away for whatever reason and he is torn between being her friend/having a crush on her and finding her suspicious.

I'm guessing Nana is actually the real main character. That or the mysterious guy hiding his power. I'm guessing Nanao is actually dead and not just a fakeout because him coming back would automatically blow her cover.

Ok so
I've been keeping a reading list for 2020. Thread-wise I've read 1 Light Novel and 41 Manga, 5 dropped before finished and 36 to completion.
I'm one series short of reading 60 things this year.
Although I do have a number of manga at hand to read, I'm certainly not averse to the idea of increasing that number to 65 or even 70(!!!).
So if you've got any manga or LN to which you can apply any of the following:
>are interested in but haven't read
>feel strongly about and want more people to read
>know nothing about besides the title
>know everything about including the title
Please consider me a willing test subject until December 31st.

Now please enjoy the low quality Symphogear gifs I made last year and recently found again

The only manga/LN I've ever felt like reading are spin-offs of franchises that I really like that I know have a literally zero chance of ever getting any sort of anime adaptation. Stuff like Electric Tale Of Pikachu, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Innocent, Puella Magi Oriko/Suzune/Kazumi Magica, and WIXOSS: Peeping Analyze. And even then, it's only because my fandom for those franchises manages to outweigh my distaste for the manga/LN format.

So sorry Juha, I can't really help you find manga unless you just so happen to already be familiar with one of the anime franchises I mentioned.

I always hear good things about Liar Game (manga) and have been interested in reading it but never got around to it. I think I asked for things similar to Kaiji once and a ton of people said LG. Also been wanting to continue Kaiji past where the anime left off and check out some of that author's other works (Strongest Man Kurosawa, etc)

For stuff I've read I admittedly haven't read much manga other than those that I read when I was first starting to study Japanese and needed reading practice. Yotsuba& was a really fun series. I also read Nisekoi all the way to what the latest chapter at the time was (as of like 2015) but I barely remember anything from it other than it being decently entertaining. I never watched its anime, either.

I made it to the exact halfway point of Go Princess Precure last night, and it's been pretty interesting so far. Note: Anything beyond this point that's under spoiler tags is related to either major story developments or the identity of the fourth Precure that joins later in the series.

* Haruka (Cure Flora) is a total dork and excellent reaction face material, while Minami (Cure Mermaid) and Kirara (Cure Twinkle) are both pretty fun side characters too, though they're all fairly similar character types to Cures I've seen in other series already. Princess Twilight makes for a fantastic villain, and the reveal that she was actually the long lost princess of the Hope Kingdom (before she regains her former self and then transforms into Cure Scarlet) was such a great moment. As her normal self, Towa, she's also a total dork, but in a different way from Haruka.

https://i.imgur.com/6OIlv1Z.png
https://i.imgur.com/iBPLosB.png
https://i.imgur.com/AKx752a.png
https://i.imgur.com/n4ViFdl.gif

* Yui is a first for me in this franchise though. This is the first Precure series that I've ever watched where a normal civilian is fully aware that her friends are legendary magical girls trying to save the world from the brink of apocalypse but has absolutely no desire to join the fight and become a Cure herself. She stays their friend and occasionally helps out, but is perfectly fine watching the fights from the sidelines. It's a rather refreshing change of pace from the other series I've seen where every major character is either a Cure, an ally from another world (usually fairies), or a villain.

https://i.imgur.com/29ohfcf.png
https://i.imgur.com/U2827oQ.png

* Speaking of refreshing changes of pace, GoPri is also the first Precure series I've watched that primarily takes place at a girls' boarding school and not a regular town/city with the girls living at their own homes. Each of the main three girls has had just one single episode where a family member appeared, and aside from those, the girls are totally independent despite being only 14-15 years old.

* The prince of the Hope Kingdom that plays a side role in the story, Kanata, reminds me so much of Akio from Revolutionary Girl Utena that I can't bring myself to like him even though (so far) he seems to be a pretty good guy. I just can't shake the Akio connection out of my mind. It's unnerving.

https://i.imgur.com/a3ALHwk.png

* The fight scenes are incredible. If you only remember one thing from this post, make sure it's what I just said right there. Despite the slice-of-life aspects making GoPri feel extra girly (even by normal Precure standards) outside of battle, the fights are peak hot-blooded badassery and some of the hits these girls take and deliver in battle look really brutal. Cure Flora is basically a shonen protagonist trapped in a magical girl's body who blasts her enemies with flowers instead of kamehamehas, and her teammates are almost equally badass. This is easily the strongest aspect of GoPri and why I constantly see it recommended (alongside Heartcatch and Smile) for newcomers to the franchise.

* The only animation-related flaw is that they decided to use CGI for the magical items (AKA the toys they're trying to shill for the kids to buy) and the final finishing attacks in each episode. Thankfully, it's all isolated to the reused stock footage that can easily be skipped when it pops up.

* On that note, if you skip all of the stock footage (transformations and finishing attacks, possibly the OP/ED as well) you can breeze through episodes pretty quickly. This applies to any Precure series (plus plenty of other magical girl series like Sailor Moon) and I think the use of stock footage for those parts helps free up more of the time and budget to make the actually important parts of the episodes look even better.

* With some of the shots I've seen of her in action, there is absolutely no possible way that Cure Mermaid wears any underwear in her transformed state. The animators of this series are lowkey horny (they have to be lowkey because the show's still technically marketed to kids) and I've seen a lot of angles for her that should have shown at least a slight glimpse of panties but clearly didn't. So I'm convinced that she's nopan.

https://i.imgur.com/XJcC3FT.jpg

Since I'm now at the exact halfway point, I'm going to take a break from it to watch some other stuff I have on my list (I started on the second season of Senran Kagura, plus Netflix recently released another set of 12 dubbed episodes of Pokemon Journeys) before I go back to it. But so far, GoPri is on pace to potentially join Heartcatch and Hugtto as one of my favorite Precure series that I've watched yet.
