I made it to the exact halfway point of Go Princess Precure last night, and it's been pretty interesting so far. Note: Anything beyond this point that's under spoiler tags is related to either major story developments or the identity of the fourth Precure that joins later in the series.

* Haruka (Cure Flora) is a total dork and excellent reaction face material, while Minami (Cure Mermaid) and Kirara (Cure Twinkle) are both pretty fun side characters too, though they're all fairly similar character types to Cures I've seen in other series already. Princess Twilight makes for a fantastic villain, and the reveal that she was actually the long lost princess of the Hope Kingdom (before she regains her former self and then transforms into Cure Scarlet) was such a great moment. As her normal self, Towa, she's also a total dork, but in a different way from Haruka.

* Yui is a first for me in this franchise though. This is the first Precure series that I've ever watched where a normal civilian is fully aware that her friends are legendary magical girls trying to save the world from the brink of apocalypse but has absolutely no desire to join the fight and become a Cure herself. She stays their friend and occasionally helps out, but is perfectly fine watching the fights from the sidelines. It's a rather refreshing change of pace from the other series I've seen where every major character is either a Cure, an ally from another world (usually fairies), or a villain.

* Speaking of refreshing changes of pace, GoPri is also the first Precure series I've watched that primarily takes place at a girls' boarding school and not a regular town/city with the girls living at their own homes. Each of the main three girls has had just one single episode where a family member appeared, and aside from those, the girls are totally independent despite being only 14-15 years old.

* The prince of the Hope Kingdom that plays a side role in the story, Kanata, reminds me so much of Akio from Revolutionary Girl Utena that I can't bring myself to like him even though (so far) he seems to be a pretty good guy. I just can't shake the Akio connection out of my mind. It's unnerving.

* The fight scenes are incredible. If you only remember one thing from this post, make sure it's what I just said right there. Despite the slice-of-life aspects making GoPri feel extra girly (even by normal Precure standards) outside of battle, the fights are peak hot-blooded badassery and some of the hits these girls take and deliver in battle look really brutal. Cure Flora is basically a shonen protagonist trapped in a magical girl's body who blasts her enemies with flowers instead of kamehamehas, and her teammates are almost equally badass. This is easily the strongest aspect of GoPri and why I constantly see it recommended (alongside Heartcatch and Smile) for newcomers to the franchise.

* The only animation-related flaw is that they decided to use CGI for the magical items (AKA the toys they're trying to shill for the kids to buy) and the final finishing attacks in each episode. Thankfully, it's all isolated to the reused stock footage that can easily be skipped when it pops up.

* On that note, if you skip all of the stock footage (transformations and finishing attacks, possibly the OP/ED as well) you can breeze through episodes pretty quickly. This applies to any Precure series (plus plenty of other magical girl series like Sailor Moon) and I think the use of stock footage for those parts helps free up more of the time and budget to make the actually important parts of the episodes look even better.

* With some of the shots I've seen of her in action, there is absolutely no possible way that Cure Mermaid wears any underwear in her transformed state. The animators of this series are lowkey horny (they have to be lowkey because the show's still technically marketed to kids) and I've seen a lot of angles for her that should have shown at least a slight glimpse of panties but clearly didn't. So I'm convinced that she's nopan.

Since I'm now at the exact halfway point, I'm going to take a break from it to watch some other stuff I have on my list (I started on the second season of Senran Kagura, plus Netflix recently released another set of 12 dubbed episodes of Pokemon Journeys) before I go back to it. But so far, GoPri is on pace to potentially join Heartcatch and Hugtto as one of my favorite Precure series that I've watched yet.
