I feel like I haven't played that many new releases this year or seen that many that I'm super interested to go seek out, so I'm interested in hearing about peoples' candidates for their own game of the year this year. Especially if it's stuff that's a little more niche and not covered as much! Feel free to tell me about Doom or Animal Crossing too if that meant something to you but I'm really interested in broadening my scope on stuff that came out this year.

Mostly all I played this year that I really liked was Monster Train (really excellent deckbuilder that I've sunk hundreds of hours into) and Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2 (great retro platformer that really expands and builds upon the Castlevania III pastiche into its own thing). I like One Step From Eden too (another deckbuilder based on MMBN) as well but didn't play it as much. Monster Train's easily my GOTY but I like, didn't play that many games.

I'm not sure what games I'm interested in playing. I'm really curious about Spiritfarer but I'm also really worried that it'll probably make me really sad.

Hades is easily my GOTY and better than anything from 2019 as well; currently have it ranked as my #21 of all-time. Rogue-like goodness with phenomenal combat and a compelling narrative presentation that reinforces the rogue-like structure in a way I've never seen before. I imagine it will be the type of game I pick up and play for a session every few months thanks to the brevity of each run.

Final Fantasy VII Remake
Paper Mario: The Origami King
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2
Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory

All four of these could've been garbage, but all of them have thoroughly impressed me.

Also gonna do a quick shoutout for Among Us. Definitely one of my favorite multiplayer experiences ever.

As someone who did not like FF7 at all, FF7 Remake completely changed how I looked at FF7 and made it one of my favorite games. The overall presentation of FF7 Remake is off the wall. My girlfriend who has 0 experience with FF7 played it and loved it too.

The only reason FF7R is not my GOTY is because Hades came out this year. Easily the tightest and most polished roguelike/roguelite I played.

I'm currently in the middle of Yakuza: Like a Dragon and I'm absolutely loving it. Haven't felt so thoroughly absorbed in a JRPG in a while, though maybe that's to be expected since it's also very much a Yakuza game, and a wildly ambitious one at that. (For points of JRPG comparison I should note I haven't played FF7R yet since I'm waiting on the PC release. Seems like something I'd love, though!)

Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia is probably my favorite game this year despite how much I loved Hades, but it's flawed in enough ways that I'm a bit hesitant to recommend it. There's a demo, at least.

There is no bad time to get on the Hades bandwagon.

13 Sentinels is worth checking out if you would like to see how many plot twists can fit in a single game without it collapsing on itself.

Paradise Killer is the last game I played through, and it's very charming and interesting. It didn't really hit for me as the detective game it's sold as, but the world and characters were fascinating enough that it might be worth checking out anyway.

World of Horror was definitely the best game I played this year. A 1 bit ode to Lovecraft and Junji Ito done in an old RPG game style format, but it's very easy to get into and there's a ton of variations to each scenario. It's one of the best adaptations of cosmic horror ever and easily the best in video game format.

I played "a short hike" which was short indie game about a bird flying to the top of a mountain.

It was really good, and probably the best designed game I played this year. I absolutely hate walking simulators but this game nailed it by making the movement fun.

Also lots of people around me liked spiritfarer even though I thought it stunk.

This year I mostly played old games,
So i played only 2 2020 games - Resident Evil 3 Remake and Ori and the Will of the Wisps

RE3R was very dissapointing sadly
Ori was fantastic so I guess that's my GOTY? (not saying much if I played only two games)
Will play Shantae and the Seven Sirens this weekend or the next, but I don't have my hopes high

i too recently played Paradise Killer, and it whips - really worked for me on the detective front mostly down to the open world structure and the freedom it gives you to pursue leads as you choose, and how it keeps everything ambiguous and in play the whole time.

played a ton of Hades, and yes it's good.

Kentucky Route Zero Act V ofc.

Tales from Off-Peak City Vol. 1 is as cool as every other game in that setting.

Dpanneur Nocturne is lovely poke around a cool space for about an hour.

Ranking the games I finished this year
01. Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition (Not sure if this counts as this year but it is more a remake than your normal DE)
02. Final Fantasy VII Remake
03. The Last of Us Part II (yeah screw the haters I loved it more than the first)
04. Demon's Souls (Pretty much the same game as the PS3 original but the only game that is a must-buy on the PS5 at the moment)
05. Ghost of Tsushima
06. DOOM Eternal
07. Hades
08. Nioh 2
09. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV
10. Animal Crossing: New Horizons (technically finished)
11. Ori and the Will of the Wisps
12. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales
13. Resident Evil 3
14. Streets of Rage 4
15. Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2

All the games from 1-2 are my GotYs. 3-5 IMO are must-buys. 5-12 are also all very good games. 13-15 are entertaining games worth your time but not necessary by any means.

I only finished the games that I enjoyed this year and didn't bother with the ones that didn't click hence why the positive reviews.

Hades while a very good game with pretty addictive gameplay is overrated to the skies like most good indie games. Everybody keeps talking about the how awesome the combat is (it is very fluid and tight but nothing deep) but nobody mentions the overly repetitive nature of the game. Beating the game for the first time was very satisfying but then having to beat it 9 more times to see the true ending exposed how small the game actually was.

Typical indie over exaggerated fanfare because it seems to be the cool thing to do in this generation of games. Same with Disco Elysium. My fucking God was that game overrated. Good but nowhere close to the best high budget games Jesus christ. And for reference, I beat both games in its entirety.

Hades is a very good game in its own right and definitely worth playing but nowhere is it even close to being GotY. One of the best indie games made? Maybe.

Doom Eternal - Not a huge FPS person, but this game blew me away. Easily in my top 10 GOAT for just how nonstop-intense it is and how well all of the mechanics all work together
Fall Guys - Was good fun for the first season, kind of lost interest after that though
AC: NH - Played it daily for a few months before dropping it and never looking back, like more AC games
New World - Does enjoying a beta/alpha count?

I think that's about the extent of what I've played so far this year.

Think I've only played a few 2020 releases

XIII, FF7R, TLOU2 and the Pokemon DLCs

I have enjoyed all of them to varying degrees! TLOU2 probably slightly edges out FF7R.

XIII 2020 loses points for being a technically disastrous remake, but the core of it is still XIII so I still love it and am grateful it exists at all.

Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen was an amazing introduction to the series though it kinda makes Mask of Deception a lot more underwhelming after its finish.

Fall Guys is really good, but after getting fame level 40 in season 1 I have done much less in season 2.

I'm halfway through a whole bunch of 2020 games, including Sakura Wars, Robotics;Notes Elite, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. Each one of these is pretty good for what I've played of it so far.

Haven't played much from this year. Answer is probably Persona 5 Royal, especially if you've never played the original, but it could be Hades or 13 Sentinels. The storytelling of 13 Sentinels is definitely worth experiencing, though you should go in expecting that to be where you get the bulk of your entertainment. The gameplay, while probably having more depth than I give it credit for, can feel a bit lacking. But it's all worth it for the narrative.
