At the risk of starting a pointless flame war, what even are guns about anyway. Everyone talks about them being about protection but is it really about protection? Are you protecting yourself by escalating a conflict, seems unlikely

This is gonna be one of those topics where we can exchange anecdotes which are mostly useless so I'd be interested to see studies on the effectiveness of guns as civilian protection, if there's any good research on this.

Yep. Think about it, if you're ever in a situation where you're allowed to self defense with a gun by the time you draw your weapon you'll be dead already the other shooter is already pointing a gun at you. Same thing with a home invasion and you're woken up in your sleep

Where do you keep your firearms?

If you're a responsible owner, presumably in a safe. Do you have time to get the gun out, check its loaded, etc?

My point is that I strongly suspect there is a cultural fixation on guns that go beyond a practical need for defense, meaning many people will invest in guns before they will invest in more tried and tested methods of home defense, like better doors.

(bear in mind I'm literally pulling this all out of my ass, so I'm interested to see what the research says)

Lol no. If you have a gun for defense you keep it as close to you as possible. In a night stand, or in a mattress holster.

When you are up and moving you take it with you and secured on your person.

And who knows if they only want your TV? You have no idea what their motives are. What if they want everything you have? What if they just want to break in and kill you or assault and kidnap your wife and kids?

You dont know.

Isn't this exactly against the basic rules of having a gun though? Like isn't this how people and children end up in most gun related accidents?

I am not experienced with firearms so excuse if I'm being ignorant on it. But what I have read and heard suggests that you can't just keep loaded guns out somewhere anyone can reach them.

I don't know if a helicopter is going to crash on my house and obliterate me into pieces in 5 seconds from now, it just seems very unlikely and not something worth planning my life around. And having a loaded gun on my person at all times seems like an outrageously huge responsibility for a "just in case" scenario.

I don't think gangs of armed murdering rapists are especially interested in coming to my home like the opening plot of the Punisher, but I also suspect that if that was the case then a 9mm firearm by my nightstand might not help.

If you have kids in a house with guns then the guns 100% need to be locked up. Stop spreading dangerous, ignorant shit and then accusing other people of talking out of their asses.

The analogy was silly to illustrate a point. People coming into your house to rape and kill you is not an at all likely event. I would argue far less likely than an accident caused by having a loaded firearm on your person/in your home, but I haven't checked the evidence to back this.

I've had my home broken into twice. On both occasions they waited till I left and then stole all my shit. I'm just not very interesting to warrant someone trying to cap me for no reason.

No. Because it is near you at all times and you don't leave it unattended for the kids to get it. You lock it up when the situation calls for it.

That and you drill firearm safety and defense into the kids at an early age. Tell them not to touch a gun and how to deal with a gun if they find one unattended by telling an adult. I went through that training, so did my dad, and my kid as well. Keeping it at a safe distance when you're in bed is not a big deal.

And the helicopter situation is not comparable. If you are beefing up your doors to prepare for a home invasion, you may as well get a bit more involved. If you can give yourself a better chance, why not? 99% of peoplenl will never need it, but better safe than sorry. Especially if you live in a bad area

i didn't say hide it under a couch cushion or something. a lockbox within reach in case of home invasion will still keep anyone out who has no key. all you do is piss and moan and put words in people's mouths. why don't you throw in the towel before you have another halloween melty about getting modded

First you say it doesnt have to be locked away and now youre saying a lockbox is a good idea. You have no idea what the fuck youre talking about and shouldnt own a gun. Based on what you post about here Id be worried about whatever power fantasies that you could act upon if you walked around with a firearm.

Hang on, what is the situation here. You're asleep, it's 3am, someone breaks into your home presumably to kill you. Where do you keep the gun? is it locked up for safety, or do you have it out somewhere you can reach it quickly?

I am FAR more terrified of my children doing something stupid and irresponsible than I am of a murderer coming into my home. Like two days ago I nearly saw a 9 year old get hit by a car because he ran into the middle of the road. Do you think his parents never told him about road safety?

I just think it's much more likely that children will do something stupid and dangerous than it is that a stranger will come to kill me.

As above, I think having a gun at home introduces more risks than it protects against.

At night you keep it nearby and at the ready. A mattress holster is the best bet if using a handgun. You can also buy quick release locks if you would like. It all depends on your preference.

i never said i wanted to do that either. you have a problem with putting words in people's mouths too. This talk about people breaking in specifically to kill someone: you said that, no one else.

I'm more worried about violence on the street, though. In a perfect world, no civilians would have tools of war like this at their disposal, but the dangers and crime of America made the rules. You either play by them or take risks for no reason but to make a point that won't matter if you're dead or cleaned out.
