I went through that training, so did my dad, and my kid as well. Keeping it at a safe distance when you're in bed is not a big deal. And the helicopter situation is not comparable. If you are beefing up your doors to prepare for a home invasion, you may as well get a bit more involved. If you can give yourself a better chance, why not? 99% of peoplenl will never need it, but better safe than sorry.
