https://www.propublica.org/article/when-falling-behind-on-rent-leads-to-jail-time

It was bad enough when Jazmon Allen lost her waitressing job in March at a Hot Springs, Arkansas, barbecue restaurant during statewide closures meant to curb the pandemic.
Then after she fell behind on her rent came the shock that only happens to tenants in Arkansas: In May, her landlord filed a criminal complaint for failing to pay and failing to vacate the property.
When Allen, 29, didnt appear in court as required on the morning of July 9, a warrant was issued for her. Four days later, an officer handcuffed her and booked her into a cell at the local sheriffs office, where she remained for six hours until her mother posted bail.
Arkansas is the only state in the country that allows landlords to file criminal rather than civil charges against tenants after they fall behind on rent.

Get a load of all the landlords defending this by saying 'we need a way to evict people!'

One group even said it was easier because you don't have a civil judgment on your record lmfao

Good lol

That's not to say there shouldn't be protections for the renters who have unfortunate circumstances happen, but giving landlords no option to do anything about it is shitty

People shifting the blame to landlords is a weird take. Government should help out those affected by the pandemic, not rely on landlords to let renters occupy their property for free.

Yeah exactly, no more land owners unfairly reaping private gains from the value of land, which is almost entirely derived from public factors rather than private investment

Amazing, I know.

And the government could simply freeze all mortgages alongside a rent freeze.

Or, you know. Landlords could stop having other people pay their mortgage. Get a real job, landlords.

This should have been included in the stimulus. For the amount of money that they government spent to bail out Wall Street, they could have paid our rent for a few months.

Once they did, they would realize how sadistic and unfair the rent prices are, and then put a cap on it. When the landlords find that the average person is taking home a little bit more money, the rent instantly goes up on the next lease. This has got to stop because theyre taking so much that people cant save for retirement and we cant save to actually buy our own house to get out of the $1500/month rent prices.

people have been blaming the government's inability to manage the pandemic and deciding it was more important to shove a supreme court justice a week before an election then to actually help people. But here's the shock that's going to blow your mind. You can also blame the piece of shit landlords who are abusing a pandemic to be pieces of shit.

What stuff happened before the pandemic? Not paying rent?

See I don't understand this sentiment. Property owners work hard to be able to purchase their homes. Renters agree to pay to live on the property. But when renters cannot pay, it's "get a job landlords"?

Sounds hypocritical.

I'm okay with protections for everyone, most of what people expect out of landlords is absolutely ridiculous though - you KNOW you're going to have to pay rent, you KNOW what will happen if you don't pay rent. It's dead simple. These laws aren't fair, but I'll be damned if the inverse is making someone else who has earned their way to victory get less propection for their prospects simply because people have a problem with paying rent and that IS the center of the birthing of 'battle-ready socialism' in the U.S

Yeah, at the complex I manage, it seems like the morons who stop paying rent without any communication are the same dipshits trying to stay after eviction and skipping out on court dates.

Dont feel sorry for these shitheads. I ALWAYS work with people that communicate with me about falling behind. The types that think they can just skip and avoid everything deserve to get fucked, and I feel zero guilt making that happen.

It's literally kept on the books because they would rather have the state pay for the eviction process than landlords

So taxpayers are paying to evict people because lots of people think like certain posters here and would rather have us pay to manage someone's property and legal responsibilities than have landlords do it themselves

All because they imagine landlords never have any fault or blame in the eviction process, what a joke
