Ok? I don't see the problem, not paying rent is literal theft so that seems pretty fair IMO. Oh but that's right LaNdLoRds r BaD

Painfully obvious who here doesn't (and probably never will) own land. People like TC are the reason so many property owners are choosing not to renew leases and just selling off their properties, leading to housing shortages for renters and overall higher rent.

Pop a quarter in your asses folks, ya played yourselves with this stupid war on landlords.

Saying it is interesting doesn't mean I think it would turn out well. I would like to see what would happen. Some of my in-laws in China are landlords and they just basically are on vacation all the time and don't actually do anything. I don't know any landlords in the US, but I imagine many people have similar lives. You can see why that kind of lifestyle would anger people who pay rent. Not saying life would be better without rent, but I am saying it would be interesting to see what that would be like.

But that's kind of the thing. A number of landlords don't work and their tenants pay for everything. You could even think of a government as a giant landlord that collects taxes on its citizens (tenants). You can see why it upsets people even if there may not be an ideal alternative.

That's why said an ideal alternative may not exist. I am simply saying you can't expect someone to pay rent and watch someone else living their life doing whatever they want off rent money not having to work and expect them not to be upset. That doesn't mean I think abolishing rent is a solution. I am simply saying I understand why people feel that way. I think it would be interesting to see what would happen without rent just as an experiment, not because I think a utopia would break out.

I mean it depends. My in-laws in China simply got lucky and their land became extremely valuable. They technically had the land from the post-cultural revolution redistribution. So likely in the past someone else had the land, was killed, my in-laws received it, and then thanks to chance the land became so valuable they could just rent it out and become extremely wealthy. That's actually a common story in Beijing among landlords. Probably elsewhere too. I don't know landlords in the US, but I assume some also inherited land that became valuable and then proceeded to rent it out.

Sigh...

Renters have protections to allow them to squat and not pay rent.

Landlord cannot pay mortgage now. Bank gives zero fucks.

Eventually property owner sells for what they can get or bank seized property.

Now landlord has no land, tenant has no affordable housing as demand outpaces supply since banks own empty properties now.

Whew, that was a thinker.
