Been working for same company for over 10 years. Kinda felt burned out last year even before covid.

This year got shoved into a new group and not feeling the new manager's style. Not feeling the weird role he is having me do either.

At this point trying to decide between:

1. Stay here a little more to see what happens. Does it get better? Prob not. Might learn a few skills before I leave though. However, could also be fired cause it is hard when you don't like the role or manager.
Look and apply for new job while doing this though.

2. Just leave. Look for new job while giving my notice and if haven't found one by then, no problem. Enjoy the hopefully brief break.

3. Take a month or two "sabbattical".
This means I use the time to do certain things I wanted to do before start looking for new job. Who knows, they could become a whole new career.

Anyone in the same place or been there before and got tips and advice?

Without knowing your financial situation its always best to have something else lined up before quitting. Especially if you can do something like starting the new job in December and giving yourself some needed vacation in between.

I went through this back in 2019. Its always rough going at first working at somewhere new and learning new terms and systems. Within 6 months though you will be sitting there thinking to yourself why you didn't quit your old job earlier.

If you are at a place for 10 years and you haven't been promoted and moving up the corporate ladder then it's time to go after something else is my opinion.

Always 1. Never ever quit a job without having something else lined up. That goes triply true for a COVID-ruined job market. Good luck finding an actual full-time gig right now, or even a sabbatical from now when shit shuts down again.

I'm fortunate that my job was not really impacted by corona, but the last thing I'd want to do is tempt that fate by quitting, no matter how frustrating the job gets at times.

start looking for other work while your working, during your free time. You don't want to be without work for too long as that doesn't look well in an interview. Keep your issues to yourself, but jot them down. So any problems you have with your manager, type them in a word document and date them, so you have dates you can go back to should something not work the way you feel it should.

Just don't give them any reason to let you go.

I did 3 last year and it was the best decision I could make. But I knew I could line up another job easily and could afford the break. I really needed it for my mental health though and I had my husbands support. I was able to line up 3 job offers a couple of months later. I wouldnt recommend it if you werent sure you could find something else quickly.

I literally just applied for 3 months sabbatical to refresh myself mentally. Thinking about writing a book series during that time. Fortunately my manager was all for me taking the time to refresh mentally.

I too have been feeling burnt out for over a year, after 7 years with the company.

I could always ask but pretty sure the manager would deny any sabbattical.
One issue with him is he cannot prioritize so everything is asap, super important and he just throws new asap super important things at people out of the blue without considering current workload. Seems his baseline expectation is working outside of normal hours.

i put my two week notice in at my last job without a job lined up. it's risky, but if you have money saved up it's doable. the job was just too shitty to deal with, and i needed to get out of there immediately. by putting my notice in, i lit a fire under my ass and applied for a ton of jobs, and was able to find something a few weeks later.

my advice: if you don't have money saved up, you really shouldn't put your notice in, but if you do it might not be a bad option. with that said, do you really think things won't get better at that job? because they might.

What are the chances of being transferred to another group? During covid I think quitting may be a mistake, even if you have another job lined up; your seniority could save you if layoffs happen. I know mine had a part to play in me not being on the chopping block.

Leaving a job during Covid is a terrible move

Get a new job lined up first at least

Im going to say that quitting during an economic downturn and a global pandemic is probably something you want to avoid doing.

This is what's happened to me after I was about to go back to work. But I was just going through some mental shit and just not feeling well about it all so I took some time off. It's been since the end of July and I've kinda just taken the time to start some therapy and try to get my mind on track before I decide to jump back into to something.

I do feel like I need to get back out and get a job started up but I honestly don't know what to do because I'm afraid it's just going to start this same vicious circle I've been stuck in for 10+ years.

Idk. Probably didn't help, but that's my part.

Financially I am more than ok to do this.

Curious though, people saying quitting during covid is bad idea, is that just heresay or experience?
Has anyone actually been job hunting during covid and found it difficult or is that just something you assumed?

Logically it makes sense as many companies have laid off employees.

My saying so is more on the you're safer where you are. In my experience, and I know this isn't the case for everyone, layoffs happened and the partners chose who got the axe. I have a very good relationship with my coworkers and bosses created over the 7 years, that the people who got laid off didn't have.

I think it depends.

If you like the company you work for then a sabbatical is definitely what you should do. It'll help you refresh and it always give you a new energy in your work.

If youre burned out on the company and not just your job then i'd move on. I worked for a company that just kept making dumb decisions and hiring people that were shit. Then when i'd get promoted every person above me had the reputation of being an asshole and shady. It showed and i left.

Relating back to my earlier post, I definitely have been job hunting and currently have my resume up on zip recruiter and indeed.

I certainly have been getting a shitload of offers, but my fields of job I've worked is pretty limited so it's probably similar to somebody who's just basic job hunting.

Yeah I'm just guessing tbh but I can't find it hard to imagine that job hunting would be harder during a pandemic.
