I was (blank) when they let me stay home alone

according to statistics, most parents allow their child to stay home alone at 12 or 13 WITHOUT a BABYSITTER...

So how old were you when they finally let you?

Somewhere in the 10-12 range, I think. I have a sister who's 2 years younger than me and another that's 7 years younger, so that delayed it by a bit because there's a couple years of middle ground between "old enough to be alone" and "old enough to babysit."

I think I was 12, although it wasn't because my parents didn't trust me home alone, it was just that my parents work schedules just worked out that I never was home alone. My mom worked 6AM - 2PM so she was home before I got home from school, and my dad worked a night shift from 4PM - 12AM, so he was going to bed right after I left for school. By the time I was in middle school though, my dad switched to day shift and my mom got a different job so there was an hour or two after school where I would be on my own.

Lol I was watching my baby brother home alone at 2, and even had a finger cut off in a door at that age, luckily a neighbor in Boston brought me to the hospital and they sewed it back on. Still have the scar though.

Course that was almost 50 years ago, the world was diff then.

Parents would be in jail nowadays and youd have been in foster care

Either age 5 or 6. Definitely by age 6 though.

I remember hurrying home from school to play my brand new Nintendo 64 that I got for Christmas when I was 6. My older sister had extra curricular things at school most days and my younger brother was in daycare. My mom wouldn't be home until after 4, so I had a solid hour on my own.

We were kind of latchkey kids. I lived across the field from my school, so the risk was pretty low.

My dad let me be at home alone consistently around 14, but only because of necessity really. He worked nights and didn't want to hire a babysitter for a teen.

My mom was hit and miss for a long time, because instead of letting me watch the siblings (eventually she did) or let me do my thing she let the other kid's babysitter walk all over myself and one of my my sisters.

Her and her BF threw homophobic comments all the time, and they both berated myself and before mentioned sister. She treated me like crap when I was having a medical issue, basically told me to shut up, and didn't actually do anything about it. Literally said I could tell my mom when she got home and deal with it until then. She didn't feel like she was responsible for me because I was older, but also felt like it was okay to boss me around too.

Honestly since 2nd grade, I was responsible for waking up, getting myself ready for school, walking to school and getting home (my elementary was basically my backyard) without any adult supervision.

11 or 12

We used to take a family trip to the mall every Friday night, one week I didn't want to go

I expected my mum or dad to haul my butt into the car, instead they left :P

I thought maybe if I played the TV really loud I'd scare off any potential burglars

I wanted my folks back asap

Depends on what you mean by it. Like, at 7 or 8, I would ride the bus home and nobody was there most of the time. So, I would do my homework and watch cartoons while eating. So, I guess I was a latchkey kid...

And they could go out for a couple of hours and stuff. But probably not overnight. Though, on the weekends, they could. Especially if I had friends over. Though, I guess that's not alone. But I don't think I ever had a babysitter. Well, a real baby sitter. It was normally family. Like my grandma...
