Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances

If she missed the last one, it's probably because there is no caselaw on it. Probably, no US government has ever tried to stop people from petitioning the government, so it's just never came up in 200+ years.

Why should she know that? The First Amendment doesn't guarantee the right to protest.

(Granted, assembly + speech heavily implies such a right should exist, but without anything explicit it's easy enough to argue it doesn't.)

...It does, though?

Hmm I guess in my mind I've always thought of the right to petition the government as the right to protest the government, but I guess they're actually different and protest should just be covered under assembly+speech

Guess I'm dumb...!

Nah, you're right. Petition the government for redress covers protest. It's why that portion of it is used interchangeably with "protest."

EDIT: Basically: "all public articulation of issues, complaints and interests designed to spur government action qualifies under the petition clause, even if the activities partake of other First Amendment freedoms."

More concerning though is she thinks only "Virtuous" citizens should be allowed to vote.

I assume it is in reference to the opinion noted in this article: https://apnews.com/article/race-and-ethnicity-donald-trump-confirmation-hearings-discrimination-amy-coney-barrett-4380ef16b3da79836151bcaaa7eda224

The article itself examines her opinions written during her time as a judge on a range of topics (it was the source included with the link I posted this morning about her opinions on hostile workplaces). You want the second header for Voting Rights. This was a case from 2019.

The AP reports...
In the same opinion on gun rights, Barrett dipped into constitutional history to note that states did more to protect the rights of people to own guns than their right to vote. In some states, people who were convicted of crimes lost the right to vote, but not the right to legally have a gun, she wrote.

"And as a right that was exercised for the benefit of the community (like voting and jury service), rather than for the benefit of the individual (like free speech or free exercise), it belonged only to virtuous citizens," Barrett wrote.

The right to keep and bear arms conveyed by the Second Amendment, by contrast, protects "an individual's right to protect himself -- not in his right to serve in a well-regulated militia," Barrett wrote, citing Justice Antonin Scalia's 2008 opinion for the court in a major gun rights case.

So it's looking like one plausible source of the "Hunter emails" is that they might be clumsily-laundered Russian-hacked material:

https://twitter.com/nicoleperlroth/status/1316585131818115073

...which, as the story notes, also would present the possibility of fake emails being mixed in with real, hacked emails (which the Russians apparently did in another hacked email dump in the 2017 French elections).

They could be (or a subset of them could be). Very hard to be confident of that when they were provided by the very guy who's spent the entire year trying to manufacture this very controversy, though!

Actually, probably the most convincing evidence to me that they *could* be real (despite the absolutely ridiculous story of how the author supposedly ended up getting them) is that they don't actually show the corruption people like Rudy are pushing (and you'd think if you were manufacturing evidence you'd produce something a bit more damning).

There hasn't been an established link from these emails to Russia (but the Russians did hack Burisma, so it's plausible). What we do know is that the chain of custody goes straight through Rudy and the computer repair story, while not impossible, is pretty ridiculous, so there's significant doubt as to their authenticity.

Racism and inequality is alive and well in America, despite some of the hand waving posts from certain notorious posters earlier on in this topic.

First hand, my parents were moving and were looking at homes in an area with a lot of new and newer construction. I'd call it yuppy if it wasn't filled with a lot of retirees. Anyway, my dad related how they liked one home, and the community had good amenities, but they rejected it because a black family lived next door and "you know what that means". I can't remember the exact words but I think you get the disgusting sentiment.

Also had a conversation about BLM with some other family members who didn't like it because "they (i.e. BLM) are killing people". Then had my sister going, half-heartedly "well...all lives matter...". Fucking dense motherfuckers who don't get the point.

I don't even need to tell you that they all support Trump.

Just got back in from voting. A few observations:

  • Got an "I Voted" stylus in addition to the sticker because they were giving out cheap paper ones to let people not have to touch the touchscreens on the voting machines
  • First tried to go around 10 am yesterday (Early voting opened Tuesday in Texas). The line was easily hundreds of people long. Looked like most, if not all, of the line that I could see was both properly masked and social distanced
  • Got in line today at 6:20 am (Polls open at 7 am). There were about 30 people in front of me, every single one wearing a mask and reasonably distanced. Got into the voting booth around 7:20

Pretty good signs overall tbh, especially if people have more tolerance for those daytime lines than I do.

My family would suggest this is not true, unless the half of them that were Trump supporters have done a political 180 over the last several months. At least, everyone in my family was willing to wear a mask and socially distance at a funeral I had to attend. I don't know how they behave outside of that, so I guess it's possible they are more careful about precautions when interacting with family than with the general public, but I'd be a bit surprised.

Again, I'm operating under the impression that people were sick of Hillary Clinton because of how much of a fixture she had been in US politics ever since her husband took office, so people who hated both candidates panicked and voted for Trump at the last minute. At worst the Comey letter served as an additional impetus, but it might have still happened anyway.
