No, under this interpretation protest voting is only useful if accompanied by demands or some other action to extract explicit concessions or change. And this does not happen without an organized voting bloc, otherwise you end up with what has happened in the past and is happening now with the Democratic party just kind of blindly throwing things at a wall and seeing what sticks in order to win over individual swing voters.

FWIW I think Harris is the same way. This past debate was mostly just boring but it's hard to not look like the reasonable one next to Mike Pence, and she is good in Senate hearings as well despite being a normie dem in a lot of other situations.

The debate being boring was part of the plan. They don't want people talking about Pence or the VPs or whatever. They wanted to keep the public focus on how shitty Donald Trump is for America. Her job in that scenario was definitely to not rock the boat because her opponents ship is already sinking.

People say this a lot about cheating but I strongly disagree. It's an indictment on the person's character just like any other moral transgression is. If a politician liked kicking puppies, would you still be as 100% excited to vote for them as before? Probably not. Theoretically speaking they might be an amazing leader regardless, as puppy-kicking has little to do with passing legislature, but I would definitely be more concerned about the politician in question making decisions for the community as a whole; decisions that aren't guided by short-sighted self-interest. I'd also be less trusting of them to not get involved in corruption and scandals overall.

If you want a real life example of this - a fuckton of Republican politicians cheat on their wives. Moreso than Democratic politicians. At the very least, they're worse at hiding it.

That's not a good reason. There is plenty of time to do both. If there really isn't then the rules can be changed to reduce the time for debate/hearings. Our longstanding precedent for judicial nominees was to have no public hearings at all, and it's a good time to revert to that.

Honestly, there is some aspect of the lower polling station voter suppression that may actually bite Republicans in the ass. Not only are Democrats much more likely to mail in vote, they're more likely to vote early period this year. Are we going to get a situation where a bunch of Republicans simply don't even make it to the booth on election day?

Re: Buttigieg. Surrogate Buttigieg is basically the same guy as pre-crisis Buttigieg before he made the decision to go hard for the moderate vote in the primaries. As mentioned, this was seen most often in the debates, but there was a reason that when he first announced he was in my Top 3 with Warren and Sanders for personal preference. It took a little before he decided to change strategies and my view of him went sharply down.

But then he abruptly decided to switch modes and started attacking to his left and it was... not great.

He's super good when he's talking/dealing with a more moderate/right audience and presenting his arguments there - probably comes from being from Indiana where that would be a necessary skill and one that gets a ton of practice. Definitely makes him an A+ surrogate.
