I imagine a bunch of EU writers in a boardroom, casually discussing where to take the story next, when Lucas parachutes in from the sky, jumps through a window, and screams his new orders. Only a Sith Deals in Absolutes It's difficult to determine whether "I have the high ground" or "Only a Sith deals in absolutes" is stupider, but my friends and I quoted this line almost as much in high school. There were times when like I'd be eating Chinese food, say "I love orange chicken," and someone would slam his fists on the table and sneer "Only a Sith deals in absolutes!" I'm willing to just give Obi-Wan a pass on the obvious hypocrisy of the line and just examine it from a purely philosophical perspective, but you can't possibly argue that it makes sense. "Only people who are evil or power-hungry or controlled by their own desires think in absolute terms?" What is that even supposed to mean? Darth Icky vs Darth Insanius Speaking of the Apprentice from Soul Calibur! The makers of The Force Unleashed asked Lucas to give a Sith name to their new character, so he threw out Darth Icky and Darth Insanius, and they ended up just dropping it and never giving him a Sith name. I could have come up with better bad guy names when I was five. I realize Lucas sort of stumbled into success and didn't plan to come up with dumb bad guy names for the rest of his life, but come on, dude, you need a better game than Darth Icky. Darth Sanus could have worked, though, so from that perspective, I'll say that Darth Insanius is technically closer to being a better name. Gray Jedi Don't like it. Honestly, I think the more details and 'types' of Force-users there are, the less interesting the Force becomes. Like, I envisioned the Dark Side as a corruptive influence, that it's using your ugly desires to achieve your goals immediately rather than working more harmoniously with the Force. I always kind of interpreted the Dark Side as a magical mystical interpretation of the idea of doing what you personally want to do versus thinking about the greater good of the universe, but apparently not. You have things like the Imperial Knights in the Wiki article, who are like "the Force is just a tool, bro, use it but just don't overuse it and you won't go crazy." I think the idea of purposefully being able to balance your usage of the Dark Side so you don't turn crazy is sort of ruinous to the mystical elements of the Force? Remember Yoda's line, "If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will, as it did Obi-Wan's apprentice?" Apparently not! You just need balance in your heart or whatever. Blegh. Luke/Leia Kisses This is nothing but evidence of Lucas' lies about how much he planned ahead, really. Force Ghosts A great idea. It allows Obi-Wan to deliver exposition after he's dead, and it emphasizes the mystical nature of the Force as something that unites the entire universe, even beyond the lines of life and death. The idea that Qui-Gon Jinn invented it is stupid, of course, because it should have just been something that any Jedi could do, but the idea is still really solid. Of course, there's the famous question of why Darth Vader's ghost turns into Hayden Christiansen when Obi-Wan and Yoda remain old. Don't even try telling me that that's when Anakin was last Anakin instead of Darth Vader, because that implies that Sebastian Shaw Vader isn't really Anakin and is still Vader. It never becomes a problem in-universe, the plot never balances around the idea. Like, what else is Obi-Wan going to do? RotJ needs him to have a very long exposition dump, too long to have him just stand there and ramble on for five minutes. Yes, it takes away from the magicalness of Force ghosts when one sits on a log and casually chats with Luke, but what else are you going to do? Likewise, ghost Luke catching Rey's lightsaber when she tries to destroy it, you know what, fine. I'm going to accept that one. Jar Jar Tongue Candy An absolute nightmare from which there is no awakening. Boss Nass Boss Nass is terrible, of course, but I want to talk about his face. Every Gungan we ever see has an elongated face with like a snout except Boss Nass, who has a much more human-shaped face. He also lacks the long ear things on the back of his head, and his eyes are human-placed instead of on top of his head. Basically what I'm saying is that Boss Nass looks nothing at all like a Gungan, which makes him extra bad. Did they think that Jar-Jar's body shape couldn't be made to look comically fat? Because I'm not buying that. Slave Girl Bikini Boy oh boy, if there was ever one thing in the OT that Disney was not going to retain, it's the slave girl bikini. Can you imagine your female lead being enslaved by a pimp slug and turned into a trophy with a golden bikini in any other movie except Star Wars? I sort of can't. I guess there's no better way to establish that your villain is an evil sexist than to force women to dress in slave bikinis. It doesn't even make sense, given that Jabba is a slug and therefore presumably a hermaphrodite with no attraction to humans, so I'm wondering if the bikini was made to emphasize how evil he is or simply because they needed Leia to do something during that sequence of the movie. For how completely irrelevant the slave girl bikini is to the plot, it's kind of amazing how memorable it is. It's an iconic Star Wars thing, not as famous as lightsabers and the Death Star, but about as famous as AT-AT walkers and Yoda's speech pattern, and it's only on-screen for like fifty seconds total. The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am I don't know, it's a good line, but I never really imagined Darth Vader as witty? I can imagine the Emperor being like "I am not as forgiving as Vader" to one of his minions, but Vader himself always comes across like he's in rage mode unless he's dealing with another Jedi. I remember the cowgirl being scared of boxes, I remember the old prospector being the villain, I remember the fat guy trying to sell them, and I remember Zurg telling Buzz that he's his father at the end of the movie. I guess if you're going to combine Vader and Palpatine into one character and make him more comedic, Zurg is how you do it. There is just no way that the Luke who refused to give up on Vader would give up on the galaxy and the Force. It's too bad, and I think Mark Hamill was pretty much in the right on this one. Now This is Podracing! I honestly gave no thought to this line. It's just one of about twenty lines that blew up into memes after the RLM PM review, and deservedly so. It's such a shame that Jake Lloyd turned into a crazy person because Star Wars ruined his life, or else this line would be even more fun to make fun of. No Underwear in Space I once complimented how there's no paper in Star Wars in order to make it more exotic and un-Earthlike. Technically, this would also qualify for the same compliment, but the difference is that we all know perfectly well that Lucas just wanted Carrie Fisher's boobs to be as visible as possible. Did you know they had to tape down her nipples because they were too visible through her costume? Incredibly strange decisions. Tutaminis I hate to keep harping on this, but okay: the more you explain and detail the Force, the less mystical it becomes. Having a dedicated technique for absorbing heat and electrical energy is about as un-mystical as you can get. Like the idea of it is fine -- humans have an instinctive respect for fire and lightning (which is why Zeus is associated with lightning), so we automatically view them as mystical even if we know they're not, and having Yoda absorb Palpatine's lightning with his fist is cool. But actually giving that a formal name and stuff, while logical and sensible from an in-universe perspective, is boring. Also, the name is weird. Garik Loran Again, this is the kind of cool thing the EU specializes in: making complicated, fleshed-out characters you've never heard of. "Movie star turns Rebel turns spy" is a weird concept, so I'm okay with this guy. Vader's Helmet The face of evil: a robot Samurai thing with a breathing problem. It's funny how something thrown together in the mid-70s by some guy can be so famous and genre-defining. It's even used as a storytelling device: Luke taking Vader's helmet off symbolizes Vader's death and Anakin's return. Boba Fett's Helmet The important part about Boba Fett's helmet is that it has scuff marks everywhere and the paint is damaged. Darth Vader is part of a giant empire and can afford to have shiny equipment, but Boba Fett is a scum-of-the-galaxy bounty hunter, so he doesn't have the time to fix that kind of thing. Very good attention to detail, I appreciate that. Kylo Ren's Helmet Kylo Ren as a concept is one of TFA's few good original ideas. How do you make a Darth Vader clone? You have him be a literal fanboy with impulse control problems. The helmet itself even looks like a low-rent Vader clone from a knockoff movie. I appreciate how Kylo's helmet is unintentionally made into a symbolic storytelling device. Rian Johnson's entire movie is about killing the past, so Kylo destroys his helmet and that's that. But then Abrams returns and has Kylo fix his helmet, and that ends up symbolizing him undoing everything Johnson tried to do. It's so blunt and obvious that I'm not even sure that I'm reading too much into things, and that Abrams might have legitimately known what he was doing. 70s Computers What started as a necessity of the time turned into an intentional thing. This is as opposed to Star Trek, which updated its concept of computers over the decades (sort of to its detriment when you get to DIS), and puts Wars more in line with the Alien franchise. I would say that Alien is another franchise where the science aspect is really just in service to something else, so it doesn't matter like it does in Trek -- except where Wars' science is in service to mystical fantasy nonsense, Alien's science is in service to horror and truly terrible Paradise Lost analogies. I can't believe how bad those Alien prequels are. What's the least ruined big 70s/80s sci-fi franchise? It has to be Back to the Future, right? Star Wars, Minus the Movies with Prime Numbers Oh, uh, so subtracting 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7? That leaves us with ANH, RotJ, TLJ, and TRoS. Yeesh. I mean, there are movie franchises that have done worse. ANH is fantastic, of course, and RotJ is pretty okay. TLJ, though, I'm imagining someone making a third movie in a franchise that tries to subvert everything the first two did. I don't think TLJ works as well as it does (not that it works especially well) unless Star Wars is already this huge cultural phenomenon with a guaranteed place in pop culture history, so I don't think TLJ is capable of being 'only' the third movie. TRoS being the fourth, though, would be an indication that the Star Wars universe just has no new ideas left, which, hey, is probably the case anyway. Build Your Own Lightsaber Toys Honestly, lightsabers have reached a point where they're no longer, like, an iconic piece of movie history. They're more like just an image people have and can do whatever they want with. I'm struggling to think of an analogy here, but my point is basically just that lightsabers aren't special anymore, so you can make an extremely dumb triple-lightsaber toy. Lightsaber Whip I hate it. I hated it when the Ferengi did it, and I hate it when Star Wars does it. The more types of lightsabers you introduce, the less special they are. This goes back to the Build Your Own Lightsaber Toys, but basically, all you need is the standard lightsaber and maaaaybe the double-bladed one. It also doesn't help that where swords are actual weapons and are associated with combat and nobility, etc, whips aren't weapons? They're tools that hurt when you get hit by them. It's like making a lightsaber wrench. Star Wars Music Does Star Wars have the best overall music of any film franchise? I think it might. It certainly kicks the crap out of Star Trek (sorry, Trek). They knew exactly where and how to use whimsy, fantasy, ominousness, adventure, and tragedy. I can't think of a single misfire. AT-STs Oh, these things. Not quite as fun as the AT-ATs, AT-STs are the woodland equivalent. The fact that AT-ATs need Rebel fighters to defeat, but AT-STs can be defeated by ewoks, really takes away from their scariness. It's also kind of more inherently comical when their legs are long and spindly and clearly could not hold up their heads, whereas the AT-AT legs are at least big and strong-looking. I do like that episode of the Mandalorian where they're **ing their pants at the idea of fighting one, and have to come up with a plan specifically to defeat it. Ass Pull Page (TVTropes)** Eh, not my style. I like complaining about thematic things falling apart than strict story logic. I also like talking about story logic and plot holes, but this is a little too much for me. Like, I don't care that Rey can fly the Falcon without training, that's whatever. Some of these things aren't even ass pulls, they're more like just bad writing. Starkiller Base You can justify a lot of TFA's rehashes with "well, it's the Force." Not this one. I won't talk about how illogical it is that the First Order can build this thing. Instead, I'll talk about how the characters in the movie itself, or at least Han Solo, comment upon how this has been done before.
