Real question:

When people say spicy they usually refer to the heat, but there are spices that are very powerful, but not for their heat... are they "spicy"?

I would say spicy can be subjective based on different people. I am hoping to gain insight based on the disclosed dish.

I don't know what pepper it was exactly, but one time when i worked at a stocker at a grocery store my coworkers pranked me(and not in a nice way) by telling me to eat this pepper that looked like a mild pepper on the chart hanging in produce.

It was actually the hottest one on the list. I was in agony immediately after. my boss, who was a cool dude, let me just straight up grab some milk out of the cooler and let me pay when i calmed down. It was awful. Now a days, I could likely handle that pepper, or at least not be so shocked at the heat. Back then it was not fun.

An Indian fellow i knew back home had the hottest sause i've ever tried.

he put a capful of this stuff in a batch of 10 eggs that he cooked in a wok. my third of the batch hurt. those were some angry eggs. the tiniest straight dab of this shit on the tip of my pinky finger made me have to step outside for a good while.

i wish i could remember what he called it. i don't mind spicy, but this shit was painful and unpleasant. it was like chewing a mouthfull of hornets. angry hornets.

I don't remember, actually. It's not like I eat spicy for spicy's sake, though I do handle or enjoy it better than some folks. *shrugs*

Edit: I should note that I used to work, and practically live, at a Thai restaurant, and currently work for a grocery store's deli making "oriental" food in which I add a fair deal of spice to a couple dishes (General Tso's Chicken and Mongolian Beef). These things do not phase me. lol

i don't mind spicy as a flavor, but food shouldn't hurt.

that being said, the Tso's, Mongolian beef and even the cold sesame noodles in my area are all great disappointments.

The thing that totally caught me by surprise was a horseradish cocktail sauce they were sampling at Costco. The sample lady said "Careful, this stuff is hot" and I was like "Yeah, I'll bet." and I stuffed the entire shrimp in my mouth and it was like being hit in the face with a 2x4. It wasn't really burning hot like peppers, but it was just so incredibly pungent like it exploded into my nose. I could barely breathe, my eyes started watering, and it felt like someone had just taken a Dremel to my sinuses.

So the next time they were offering samples I figured I knew what I was getting into and tried it again. WHAMMO! 2x4 to the face again.

I've tasted Szechwan that was so hot that it made me break out in sweat (which is a sign that the Szechwan's good, or so I'm told). Haven't tried ghost peppers but have had some pretty hot beef jerky once or twice. The hottest stuff I run into now is either fire sauce from Taco Bell or salsa (medium). On occasion I've visited Tijuana Flats restaurants but haven't dared to try any of their hot sauces.

Yea, horseradish is a whole different kind of spicy. I have a friend who is from Sri Lanka and he had a sandwich with horseradish mayo on it, and he was talking about how he never experienced anything like that before. Which is funny because he is the kind of person who throws ghost peppers into everything he cooks, lol!

No since in a context of food spicy means hot. For example the sun is not spicy.

i'd totally allow for that. also, i've seen Garlic concentrated to the point where it draws tears. hell, Onions can be spicy OR sweet right out of the gate before they ever touch a pan.

spicy doesn't HAVE to mean "Hot" and "angry", but its the most relatable. how many people are willing to pack a lip of Oregano like it's tobaccy? ever chew a bay leaf?

as others have said, horseradish is in its own tier. Anise exists.

there's plenty of things that hit the threshold for "spicy" without being a chilli.
