I don't think it is ever worth it to start with a power up. Almost all games start in 1-1 where you can just get the Fire Flower yourself. Even in the worst case where you run straight into the first Goomba, you didn't really invest too much into the game yet anyways.

I didn't know there was a bonus for using no power ups. I always started as Fire Mario because it was cheap and you could immediately start of with 15 extra seconds grabbing the first power up.

That was always my thought too.

It's too late to edit my post now, but if it wasn't obvious, I meant 2x coin multiplier for the Small Mario bonus.

Of course now I have almost 20k coins and there's nothing really to spend them on! I hope they add stuff to spend them. Other character skins would be cool to start off with.

well, at least it has 4-1 though.

4-1 does make every other level interesting real fast, though. You can even warp directly for 1-2 to 4-1 so it is never that far away.

I did a similar cheese on day 1 with the game and I've been trying to replicate it since! That spot looks way better for it though. I think I was on 2-1 where there are two pipes you can bounce a koopa shell in between, and I somehow got the screen in the proper location for the shell to register hitting both pipes off screen and for the enemies to be summoned off screen.

I thought I had that match in the bag, but eventually the enemies finally stopped spawning. I waited out the clock (I was in ! time and I didn't know about that yet - so I thought the clock was running down that fast for everyone!) and bolted with like 175 time left. I died shortly after...because for some reason I thought that was the right time to go to a coin heaven.

I have since become wiser.

Since I started putting 4-1 in the queue this got a lot more fun. Even if I don't get there quickly someone else usually does and then there are Lakitu flying around everywhere.

Won a game with one second left on the timer because of the Lakitu horde. Might as well retire right now, I'm not topping that one.

You'll need a lot of coins to buy the power ups you'll never use in order to get more coins.

I am convinced that they have some plan to make coins spendable on things in the future, like how Tetris 99 added themes.

or I'm just hoarding my coins for no reason and oh well! it felt too good making the top 3000 in the world in coin ranking that I may never take a power up with me in a battle

Finally got my first first place!

I generally start with the mushroom to pick up the fire flower immediately. Coins dont have any other use right now so I don't think it's a waste

and Im generally terrible at the game so I prefer to have the fire flower during that stretch between the first and second powerup in 1-1

that first goomba will one day ed-bellis me

Also, I haven't unlocked anything past 3-1 yet

So "most enemies defeated" on the stats screen is supposed to be for a single match, right? Because I just had 1000 enemies defeated last round (lol 17 minute match to take home the W) and my "most enemies defeated" stat has been stuck at 288 for forever. Is anyone else's insanely low? Maybe it's just for a single course?

My "best streak: single shell defeats" is 240 due to that shell cheese I mentioned earlier, so maybe the game thinks I cheated or something.

In case anyone was worried about this, if you touch the flagpole in a stage you've never beaten before, but win the game before the next stage starts, it still counts as a clear for the sake of unlocks

my Most Enemies Defeated is 119 so it must just be for a single course

I'm hoping this game is just them testing the waters or something, and they planned on making a more advanced version if it ended up being popular.

That's like the only way I can see the decision not being a super dumb one, anyway.

To be honest, I really do think they just intend for this to be a limited time event - they might change their mind if it's popular enough, but I don't think they mean to invest in this

Yeah, I'd be equally not surprised if it did just die quietly in the night.

And honestly, by that point I don't think that many people will care. It's easy to get mad about it now since we know about it now while the game is still new, but this does not seem like it has that kind of legs.

Won a game after running out of time, somehow. Second place guy died after I did, but before the results came up, which put me in first I guess?

It wouldn't surprise me if the videos of each player are delayed by a slight amount. So the player actually died before you did but the video delay made it seem like you died first.

Also I popped it on few a couple of games before I got to bed and won in my first match in an absolute war of attrition.

Am I mistaken or do KOs give you additional time? Because I was down to 3 and I had like 70 seconds left and suddenly it was 370.

KOs give both time AND coins. They are OP. Good incentive to kill harder enemies but they add a bit too much RNG to the game imho. I've taken home plenty of victories without getting a single KO though, so there's that.

I have a hell of a time getting KOs usually, seems like most of the early deaths are just people getting killed by goofy stuff like the first goomba and the better players barely die at all unless it's time or a botched jump. The only time I got a decent amount of kills was when I ended up with like 20-30 Lakitus on my screen and sent them all away with star spam.

The KO conditions is pretty strict so they are hard to do. It isn't enough to force an opponent to make an error that kills them. You need to have one of your enemies directly kill an opponent. If an opponent has coins left, they shouldn't really be dying due to getting hit so you frequently need to hope they screw up there as well.

Yeah, I can send a ton of stuff to a person, and see them die from it and not get the KO. I guessed if someone else ended getting the final blow, or if the person died themselves (despite my enemies causing the interference) it didn't count as a KO.

Makes KO numbers really useless imo.

Oh yeah, less lenient than Tetris then. Way fewer players too, especially since a lot of people lose really early. I was kind of annoyed by how good most people were in Tetris 99 but I appreciate it much more after playing this.

KOs should 100% only award coins. Doing an insane amount of work for 400 time just to have a guy with 90 seconds get a kill and a full timer is very bad game design.
