Fuck those stupid invisible blocks in 1-4. I never knew they were there, you've never had to jump on enemies in that area before, but they're like the troll blocks in Lost Levels. I keep jumping into them and slamming into an enemy I was trying to go over. I lost a run because I hit two in row!

Yeah, hammer bros in this game just have a completely new AI pattern. I was shocked when one chased me too because they don't do that in smb1 at all.

Finally got around to playing this game. I ended up getting 2-2 as my first level, followed by 2-3 and 2-4 in the same match.

If I had played this on Day 1, it probably would have been a lot more 1-1.

Did you play in the regular 35-player Battle or the Special Battle mode? There should still be tons of 1-1 if you played the regular 35-player mode.

Special Mode starts at a random World 1 or World 2 level then goes in order looping back to 1-1 after 2-4. That's why you started in 2-2 then went to 2-3 and 2-4 afterwards. At least right now. I think the Special Mode is supposed to rotate to something new soon.

So how does it work when choosing levels in the regular mode? I kept selecting 3-1 but we'd always start on 1-1.

supposedly it weights earlier levels first, and avoids picking one twice in a row

so if something like 3-1 is picked it'll probably be near the end of the queue

Unlocking levels in this game seems absolutely brutal - past w3, I have never unlocked a level without being one of the last 5 people alive, because the level never comes up until late. Sometimes I'm one of the last 2 alive and I'm just praying that my opponent doesn't die before I get to the end of the level I want to beat. Best way to do it is to just use the warp zone in 1-2 every time and always go to the leftmost pipe because that pushes you the furthest ahead.

I'm not entirely sure. I've heard people speculate that all the levels selected by the 35 players get put into a level pool and tons of people just pick 1-1 so it shows up often. I don't know exactly how this interacts with unlocking new levels. Like if you play (because someone else submitted it) and beat 7-4 you unlock it. But, I don't know how the very first person to get 7-4 gets 7-4.

To unlock 7-4, you either have to beat 7-4 in a match, OR, have beaten 1-1 through 7-3 before in a match.

My unlocks are currently up to 6-3, having cleared 1-1 through 6-2 at least once each throughout my many, many matches.

Hammer Bros. do actually chase you in SMB1 if you let them stay on screen for a long time (like 100+ in-game seconds). In Lost Levels they start doing it right away in the later worlds. I suspect they automatically get that behavior in this game if the match is in "hurry up" mode (when the music starts playing faster) and you often don't even find Hammer Bros until that point so seeing their "normal" behavior is rare. I guess you could check by picking Practice, but I'm too lazy to do it now.

You have to beat whatever the highest level you have unlocked is to unlock the next. So, for example, if you have 2-1, and you beat it, you'll unlock 2-2, so now you can select 2-2 and hopefully beat it to get 2-3 and so on.

Okay I tested it out in Practice Mode and the Hammer Bros. always chase you if you run past them in this game.

I saw a match where there were so many Lakitu that a second row of them formed at mid-screen instead of all being at the top.

Well, right. I was mainly answering where he asked how one does it themself/how the first person did it, since he knew beating it from somebody else's rotation unlocks it.

Boy, getting five castle levels in a row sure is fun. I'm not sure if I'm being sarcastic or not, since I did beat them all and take the game and it felt great.

I'm having a lot more fun with this now that I understand it better. And getting more variety in the stages. I wish the targeting was better though. None of the auto target suggestions are really helpful, and it's really hard to manually target while playing the game (I have a REAL problem forgetting that only the dpad controls Mario while manually targeting. My brain simply can't adjust). Still, it's really satisfying to see someone stuck as Small Mario and being like "I hope you'll like these half dozen Bowsers heading your way".

I'm not sure if it's just because I'm really familiar with SMB, or just the game design, but this is the easiest battle royale game I've ever played. I have a pretty solid win rate now. But in the end, I think I enjoy the random elements of playing through Mario levels than the battle royale aspect. It really makes me want a Super Mario Bros. roguelike now...

after playing a bunch of this I decided to boot up All-Stars briefly and play normal SMB, and I didnt realize until now how many levels in the game are just slightly different versions of earlier levels.

I warp zoned to 4 and then to 5 and I get to 5-3 and am like wait this is the level I just played three dozen times in Mario 35, but with bullet bills

5-3, 5-4, 7-2, and 7-3 I know are "remixed" levels, I don't think any others are but I don't remember 6-3 or 6-4 off the top of my head

The last 2 were not in red time yet, but one player had an exclamation point by their time and it was ticking down at red time speed. The other player did not

Then once red time hit their times decreased at the rates you would expect

Any idea what makes them start penalizing your time early?

Yeah that exclamation point timer is to make you keep moving, once you start going again it goes back to regular speed. I only had it happen to me once when I kept screwing up a jump like six times in a row

Theres a point at which the timer starts going faster for everyone, but also the timer will speed up if you stay in one place for too long.
Also the timer tops out at 400 seconds so even if you wanted to just wait and hope the others time out, odds are they have a similar amount of time left as you but theyll recover time by killing stuff and youll just run out.

I have been getting to my w6 picks the last couple of runs by just basically literally speedrunning the game, I stop to get coins but that's basically it. It's always like at the end of the rotation, but if you get 1-2 frequently enough and people live for at least 10 minutes or so you can make it. It's really hard though, and it's bizarre to me that it's so hard - even though I win about 2/3 of my games, which is a frankly stupid rate to be winning 35-player games, I still have to PLAY MY ASS OFF to EVER see 6-2, which is completely insane

what the actual fuck, the match I just did went for SO LONG, the timer went into full on 10 ticks per second mode and my 6-2 still did not appear at all. There weren't even a bunch of 1-2s toward the end for the level to get skipped by either

It's to keep people moving so they don't just camp in one spot for easy enemy farming. Otherwise, it'd be too easy to camp under a block canopy if you've got lakitus on you and just spiny farm, for instance. Likewise, you could just stop moving and stop enemy spawns all together, and there'd be no penalty for doing so if you've already stored time up.

So I picked up two more wins tonight. I keep trying to work my average rank up. It was 8 and now it's up to 5.

Also I walked into a castle that had 5 Bowsers in it with just big Mario and no coins and ALMOST got through it.

I'm pretty sure I had a game with like 20 Lakitus thanks to me and the two people attacking me constantly getting stars.

oh shit, I'm in the top 3000 in coin ranking for now by getting over 2800 coins in a single match

Something I haven't seen mentioned in this topic yet is the small Mario bonus. I was thinking this was just a bonus for surviving while small in a match, but it's actually a 2x multiplier for not starting with any power ups. And I've never started with a power-up since it's so easy to get Fire Mario and hold onto him for a while.

The worst matches are when you've been crushing it, have 400 seconds on the clock, and then have a dumb jump that sends you to your doom. Had a few of those and my average ranking dropped from 4 to 5 now.

but yeah I'm pretty addicted to this. 1-1 and 1-2 are getting very old though
