adding Mario maker enemy spam into a multiplayer game is hilarious, I agree that matches are too long though. picked up a couple hundred seconds off of a turtle combo and then just faffed around for the next like 20 minutes while people very slowly died off

ended up losing in fourth when someone sent a hammer bro army at me

Early games where youre just doing like, World 1 and maybe 2-1 or 2-2 take a while because none of the hard enemies are ever going to appear. Once Hammer Bros, Lakitu, and Bullet Bill are present it gets a lot harder to steamroll everything that gets sent to you

won my third match and got second like five times. Hopefully they update this as much as Tetris has been, I think adding the Lost Levels into the mix for higher-skilled players would be good

yeah it seems like if people are even passable at Mario its almost impossible to die until the timer starts being a big issue forcing you to rush, which takes too long to kick in.

I forgot it was a thing until I got up this morning and half my youtube recommendations were streaming it

I did just have a game that went for 15+ minutes, 10 of those were just me and one other guy eventually the timer just starts going faster and faster and faster, but I still had 200+ seconds left when he dropped out

Still pretty funny when all the Ed Bellis's drop out right at the beginning

So I'm a bit confused at how the stages work, when you pick a stage, does that mean everyone has a 1/35 chance of going to your stage when you beat a level? Is that why the majority of matches are just 1-1 over and over and over?

Yeah, it's also why you'll occasionally see a warp zone with multiple of the same level.

It creates a pool of the levels the 35 players choose and those are the levels you can get + I believe the next level you have to unlock.

Go fast but kill a lot of enemies to earn time. If you stay still you won't get new enemies so you need to keep moving forward. Coins are useful to activate a random power up which can be useful if you get hit. I think coins are used in some sort of ranking but I'm not sure. You can use the right stick (on a Pro controller) to change the attack targeting but I'm not entirely sure it matters too much. It is sort of like Tetris 99 if you've played that but I think targeting mattered more there.

Basically if you win a match you also get put on a leaderboard based on how many coins you have

for the last one I had picked 4-4 (the first maze castle) and when my final opponent got there (after six or seven minutes of just the two of us) he apparently didn't know the path through and ran out of time

I'm over level 50 now and win most of my games, I have some theories about the way the level pool works and some stuff about it that I know for sure is true

The stage that each player picks is put into a pool of 35, if nobody picks a stage it will not show up in the match. They are NOT shuffled randomly; early stages in the game are weighted toward the beginning of the queue, and later stages are weighted to appear toward the end of the queue, and it tries to avoid putting the same level back-to-back as much as possible. So if you're the only person to have chosen 3-2, and nobody else picked a later stage, there's a good chance it's dead last in the queue and you need to survive that long (and also not win before that point!)

Here's how Warp Zone works: Lets say for example that youre on 1-2, and the next levels in the queue are 1-1, 1-2, 1-4, 1-1. If you exit 1-2 through the traditional flagpole you will advance to 1-1 since its next in the queue. If you go to Warp Zone, your choices from right to left will be 1-2, 1-4, 1-1. It basically lets you jump ahead in the queue, it's not just a random selection of levels. Not sure yet exactly how it works with 4-2 since it has two separate warp zones. I have a guess on how it works, but it will be harder to test until that level shows up in Special Battle at some point. My guess is that the warp zone you reach by running on the ceiling past the pipe skips the next level and gives you the second in the queue, and the vine warp zone gives you the third, fourth, and fifth stages in the queue.

That's bonus coins for whomever wins; it gets some percentage of each person's coins as they die, I think?

Is unlocking the icons random or are they quest based

I see a lot of people below me in level with cheep cheep as their icon and I keep unlocking luigi poses

You also get coins from players you directly KO, so yeah you can get pretty high up there when you win.

Pretty sure icons are completely random. The reward for quests is just more coins.

Man I am way better at this than Fall Guys. I actually won a round! And I almost never fail to make the top ten. Mostly because my slow, cautious approach works in my favor in this game.

played a couple hours of this last night. It kind of feels too easy but also too tedious/hard to actually win.
Unless I stupidly mess up a jump, Im consistently top 3 and won twice, but the endings of those matches I win just feel like they go on forever because everyone whos still left has racked up a ton of time. I died at 4 or 5 in one game while I had like 400 seconds and spectated the other players and they all also had like 400 seconds.

also I legit might have played 1-1 a hundred times last night.

Im still kind of enjoying it, and kind of curious about the meta game aspect. Ive been trying to warp zone my way to a castle so I can subject other people to Bowser, but maybe Id just be better off looping 1-1 for eternity.

I want a version of this for SMB3 or World so there can be some more power up variety

I'm not sure if going after a castle just to send a single Bowser is worth it. Also being inside 1-4 means it is hard to dodge enemies yourself. 3-1 is generally a good level to go to. There's a Starman you can get and lots of enemies to send including Hammer Brothers. 2-2 is also good if you have a Fire Flower since sending a pile of Bloopers to someone who isn't in a water level can be nasty. If you somehow find a way to 4-1, Lakitu and Spiny can be deadly.

trying it now for the first time. Also, based on watching a couple streams of it and reading this thread I'm hyper aware of how little I remember about the details of smb1

Pretty neat. I played the normal mode once then switched to special mode and had more fun so I stuck with it. I've gotten 2nd a couple times but I feel like I was nowhere close to winning. I've also just run straight into a couple holes from mixing up the buttons and failing to jump, so yeah, I'm a beast, basically. Will probably play until I get a win then try the normal mode some more
