I do, but I don't think it was ever that the flu was deadlier. Just that, at the time, you had more to fear from the flu than from Covid. Which was true then, because Covid hadn't established much of a presence anywhere outside of China. When that changed, so did the response to it.

See, last time I checked(at the start of this pandemic), there has never been a vaccine developed for any of the viruses in the SARS family. Which is why Im so perplexed about how the media and the world talks about a vaccine.

Its like saying, Yeah, we just need to create a space station on Pluto. We havent even built a space station on planets that are right next to us, and here you guys are talking about building one on the farthest planet.

Nobody said it was going to be easy. As I've said in another topic where this was being discussed, I'm no immunologist and I don't have specific details, but I'm fairly certain it's possible for a vaccine to induce longer-lasting immunity than an infection does, largely thanks to how much more controlled the vaccine is and the ability to give boosters. The lack of a vaccine for SARS was more because it mutated itself out of existence before a vaccine could be developed than because developing a vaccine was truly impossible.

Is making a vaccine for this thing a lofty goal? Absolutely. But as the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention. The world needs a vaccine, so the world's working very hard to produce one, whatever the challenges.

Both have. The shift in which party was saying such things happened around mid-February to early March, when it shifted from "stop being a racist dickhead because you're afraid of Covid, you're currently in more danger from the seasonal flu" to "It's basically just the flu, we don't need to do anything special to control it." That's also around when more reliable data from Italy and Spain gave us a clearer picture of just how quickly the virus could spread and how dangerous it was, meaning the need for control measures became apparent.

Basically, the left compared it to the flu when people being afraid of it was causing more damage than the illness itself, and stopped when that situation reversed. The right resisted flu comparisons when they amounted to "stop being so xenophobic," but embraced them when diminishing the severity of the pandemic stood to mitigate stock market declines.
