I really like Defending Your Life's "heaven" it has the most realistic version of what an afterlife might be I have ever seen.

Great movie also a bit underrated.

Was my immediate assumption, honestly. Followed immediately by thinking about the one with The Rock. I would have gone through quite a few iterations before I even thought of Disney.

Though the pedant in me needs to point out that Hercules (regardless of context) really isn't dealing with Heaven at all as much as he's dealing with Olympus. Which is sort of a different thing altogether.

I liked the movie, but I'm not sure that would be my top pick for what I want Heaven to be.

My immediate knee-jerk answer was "The Discworld afterlife", but that's kind of a cop-out (there HAVE been multiple movies, but it's more books that shows/films). Doubly so since it basically boils down to "You get whatever you think you deserve."

But I might just have to go with Blackadder's Hell instead:

Does it have to be a show? The only example of the afterlife that springs to mind from any visual media is:

The Old Kingdom book series had a somewhat interesting build-up to its "true" afterlife which you never actually get to see; instead you see the transitional space before someone is irretrievably dead (it's a series about necromancy btw). To put it simply, Death is portrayed as a river designed to force the dead down its stream to their end beyond the nine gates which segment the nine precincts of the river. The necromancers in the series sometimes enter Death in order to try and either retrieve and revive the dead, or to drive a powerful dead creature further into Death.

This actually reminded me that Riverworld was a thing.

It's basically an afterlife where literally every human who has ever lived throughout history wakes up one day on a massive river that seems to go on forever, in little clusters where there are people from all different ages. So you could theoretically wind up living in a town with Napoleon, Helen of Troy, a 15th century Incan, and one of the Egyptian workers who helped build the Pyramids. And whenever anyone dies, they just wake up somewhere else on the river.

Also, everyone is reincarnated into their bodies as they were when they were 25, in perfect health, with all diseases, injuries, or deformities cured. And everyone basically has a magic box that gives them enough food for the day so no one has to starve.

And, of course, being humans, they almost immediately find ways to circumvent the rules and be total dicks to each other.

Sort of.

You can walk - but it's a 10 million mile long river, with about 30 billion people along its shores. So if you're planning to walk to find a specific person, you're probably fucked. But if you just want to leave the group you're in to go join a different group, you theoretically could.

Part of the setting keeps there from being any significant technology (there's no metals and very little wood), so culture is mostly forced into tribal hunter-gatherer levels, so no one's going to build any cars or boats or planes that would make travel faster. Though Mark Twain, being Mark Twain, immediately sets out to find a way to break the rules and build a riverboat, because he's Mark Twain.

If you're actually interested, they're pretty famous novels with a lot of technical details as to how all this crap works:

Man, this reminds me... (of all the things to think of) of a Death Note fanfiction I read years and years ago. It took place after the end of the series in a hypothetical afterlife that was sorta like this, but I think that it was just a general place, not a river, and there were cities? I think? and on very rare occasions Light runs into people that he's murdered. I think it was implied that it was some sort of purgatory but it's been so many years since I read it that I don't remember. I wonder if I could find it again and see if it was ever finished, though that would probably be pretty difficult since I barely remember it, lol.
