Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took a swipe at the Democratic National Convention Friday, telling her fans on Instagram that the program had not been geared to progressives like herself. Would I have done things differently? Of course. But as a young progressive Latina I know I was not the target audience for this convention. The target audience for this convention was white moderates who arent sure who theyre voting for in November, she said. Do I agree with centering the programming on that audience? Not necessarily. I think we could have done more to rally turnout enthusiasm from our partys base, she continued. Muslims has ZERO representation which is just utterly crazy to me we need the turnout Ilhan [Omar] and Rashida [Tlaib] delivered in their primaries.

point is, she's not running for POTUS, or even the senate. her voting base is very localized, her base isn't really representative of the democratic base across the country. and in an election where a few million votes matter on the national scale, pandering only to the base wont work for democrats.

I mean, what else do you expect them to do? DNC already know they have the minority and progressive votes locked down, because they literally have no other viable choice.

They have very little to gain by appealing to the further left or minorities. If they want votes, they need to appeal to the moderates and the whites.

She's right. Hillary outperformed Obama in progressive areas but tanked in conservative areas which cost her the election. Democrats don't need to run up the score in California, they need the midwest. There's literally no reason to give progresses such a huge amount of influence when they aren't a large voting bloc at all.

ok, but she didn't come out and declare the DNC all conservatives and that everyone should vote trump to spite them (which, coincidentally, some "bernie bros" have done...) she pointed out some flaws that she saw that specifically mattered to her voting base.

The fact is progressives are a tiny minority that most democrats don't even like. Pelosi was shitting all over them until Trump started insulting them forcing her to defend them. Progressives are little more then leeches to the democratic party. Like a suckerfish attaching itself to a shark for a free meal. They are to big a bunch of cowards to split off and form their own party so instead they can only get elected by having that D next to their name, otherwise they would never be elected again.

Its simple math here people, do we pander to less then 5% of a single party or do we try to appeal to 20% of the country. For someone with an economics degree she sucks at basic math.

Playing to the safe white moderate is how every democrat has lost in the last couple decades. The only time they won big was electing a perceived radical and risky pick of the first black president running on bold progressive change and with a name that white moderates thought was a terrorist.

So objectively, Biden is wrong and AOC is right.

I am curious what Barrack Obama you voted for. Because the one running in my reality was a moderate Democrat running on such "progressive" policies as believing marriage is between one man and one woman (though that view evolved for his second term once 50% of America supported gay marriage), corporate bailouts, and promoting charter schools. Classic radical progressive positions?

I know Obama turned out to be pretty conservative, which is why democrats got roughed up in 2012 after winning big in 08. You may not be old enough or weren't living in the states, but in 08 Obama was running on populist electricity with iconic posters of "change" not "keep things the same" Many were worried about his electability because he was seen as too radical and a challenging name for white moderates. He had to pick Biden because of how much he scared the white moderate. But democrats won big anyway because they turned out their base (young people, people of color) in historic rates. Not so much the 2nd time around as a moderate.

John Sides, a political-science professor at George Washington University, has estimated that 9 percent of voters who cast ballots for Mr. Obama ended up voting for Mr. Trump. Among white voters who had never been to college, it was 22 percent.

I lived in the US and voted in that election. I voted in elections before that as well. Running on platitudes isn't running on a progressive platform. It's running on platitudes. His record and policy positions were moderate. Biden is running on a much more progressive platform comparatively. A lot of people then believed he stood for things he never claimed to stand for, but I mean that's pretty common. A lot of people when interviewed about Trump and Hillary's policies had zero idea what either stood for. Most people have no idea about policy and it doesn't have a very big impact on voting behavior according to political science. Emotional aspects are much more important. Obama was both charismatic and attractive. Hillary was possibly the most unlikable candidate Democrats have ever run and no policy matters in the face of that.
