Highly recommend reading the article! It's good stuff.

Also, Raw rating barely went down. Which means... people wanted to see more Underground and Retribution? Which boggles my mind.

More strange is that sports aren't affecting wrestling now.

This isn't an accurate reading of ratings necessarily. As ratings dwindle, the audience is comprised of a higher percentage of the hardcore fan that is less likely to be affected by the content of the show.

Well, considering that ratings were up from the weeks prior to that in a bigger way, my argument is that they managed to retain viewership somehow.

This is the issue with short-term ratings affecting long-term booking. Much like climate change, it's the running trend that matters.

So what do you guys think of this Meltzer hot take? I actually think this could be the case. I think people are more invested in AEW than WWE at this point, and that while most people know WWE, I don't think they're into it enough to know the champs.

I think it's very possible. It took me 2-3 minutes of thinking to remember who the WWE champs were so the chances of the general public knowing them is very slim I think. They would probably just throw out names of people who don't even wrestle anymore.

I mean I don't think a ton of people are going to know what AEW is either. But it's more likely they have heard of AEW in passing or seen a commercial or something than they know who Braun/Drew are and that they are the champs

There's radically different from tell you they heard of AEW vs. telling you about AEW. I watched the second half of an NBA game and got four commercials. So like if someone asked a non-wrestling fan who watches NBA basketball, I'm sure I'd get "it's a wrestling show" but if I asked them what the Dark Order was, they'd have no idea.

Right, but doesn't that more or less apply for WWE too? Like nobody knows Drew McIntyre. They could tell you they know WWE. About some wrestler's they used to watch. "oh I saw John Cena in a movie the other week." But I doubt they know the vast majority of anyone on the roster, let alone the champs.

Right but this is true with AEW, too. Even less people can tell you specifics about who is champion in AEW, who are the factions, etc. There's an even bigger gap between searches of WWE vs. Jon Moxley.

There's a reason one garners higher ratings than the other. Drew McIntyre's spikes when he won the WWE title match the entirety of AEW where's Moxley's win doesn't even come close.

I tried to think of who still currently active in WWE average people might know. Like, before you could count on Cena, probably the Bellas, and so on. Now it's a lot tougher.

Miz might be the only one I'd say any sizable amount of people may know? Maybe New Day due to gaming presence?

I think the point is that their awareness of their existence is growing rapidly, and awareness of the actual goings-on in WWE is rapidly waning

Of course you cant compare awareness of the companies themselves. WWE has decades of a head start

Yeah, but that rating is almost entirely due to the 50+ demo who watches mostly out of habit. I'm more likely to run into people under the age of 50 who are likely more excited than most 50 year olds to watch their product and follow it.

I'd love to see Twitter trending of AEW vs Raw or Smackdown. I think that might also be a telling number concerning this.

I think people are jumping the gun here because it wasn't a few weeks ago AEW lost three weeks in overall viewership to NXT. If AEW keeps growing its audience and is pulling in over a million on a routine basis I might actually agree but they're not far removed from drawing 600k, too.

TNA easily. Didn't it draw over 2 million viewers head to head with RAW? And it featured guys like Sting, Hulk Hogan, and Ric Flair as regular performers.

Well, I'm talking recognition, not interest. Interest is hard to judge, and recognition isn't something Google trends is going to help you with. Like, wrestling fans are obviously going to be searching Orton more than Miz, but I'd bet money the general public is more aware of who Miz is on average.

How often are you running into 50+ people in public than 12-49? I would also wager a lot more than more people tune into WWE out of habit and just to have on background noise than AEW.

The 50+ demo is high more than likely out of routine for much older people.
