Not yet. How's the combat? I'm kind of in a holding pattern with new games because of the PS5 looming on the horizon.

The combat is fun. Overconfidence is a weakness. Fast reflexes is a strength.

Story is something that really pulls you in, especially for this type of game. Im actually listening to what people have to say because its entertaining.

I would be on it now if it wasnt for work. Game is too damn fun.

Only gripe I have at this point is when you're trying to drop down a small ledge or low roof the game seems designed to prevent you from falling off stuff so it takes some nudging to finally drop down. Fully admit I may have missed something and don't know the controls, though

As far as combat Sunny, HornedLion's point about confidence and reflexes is spot-on. The game rewards patience, quick thinking and reflexes. Enemies can swarm you, and they will gang up, not like some games where you'll get surrounded and the game AI sort of sends one enemy at you at a time, even when surrounded.

You can unlock a dearth of movesets, combat skills, tools, and weapons, and so far they feel like they add to the experience meaningfully. You can probably get by with your basic attack/block/parry set but if you take the time to learn new maneuvers and incorporate them into your game you not only become that much more lethal but it opens up options and fluidity to the combat. It's beautiful to watch. Like a ballet of death.

OK here's another criticism which might be more helpful for people on the fence.

While I'm enjoying the game immensely, for anyone who is sorta burned out on the standard open world formula that's been done to death in recent years, this game doesn't reinvent the wheel.

It has your standard fogged-over map dotted with unknown locations that you discover through exploration, liberate areas by defeating enemies, find collectible secrets and locations, etc...

You've seen it all before, but I must say you may never have seen it done quite this beautifully. The world Sucker Punch created here is stunning. Every time you take a turn around some rocky outcrop, or crest a hill surrounded by a sea of gently swaying pampas grass, the next area to come into view is more gorgeous than the last. It's incredible.

So yeah, same ol' open world tropes, but visually impressive and the combat is fairly deep but more importantly it's fun

My two cents anyway

Yeah I'm trying not to oversell it here because as much as I'm digging the game I could totally see someone saying it's not all that special. Like I said this game doesn't really innovate in any meaningful way but they did create a fun, well-made game. Would recommend waiting on a sale if the story and setting aren't already pulling you towards a purchase.

fwiw I enjoyed Horizon but feel they shouldn't have done the DLC because while the game didn't bowl me over I was satisfied with that game up until the end of the main campaign. The DLC felt drawn out and I had a hard time finishing it, even though it did add to the story and flesh things out for the sequel. I enjoy the combat more in Ghost than Horizon

There's a charm you can find early in the game that makes parrying and dodging easier.

It's at the *minor spoiler* Spring Falls Shrine on the first island. Over at Kukai's Falls in the northern/center part of the map.

I started on Hard this weekend. Combat is fun, and even though I die pretty often, all the deaths feel like my fault. The world is beautiful and I like the minimal UI and the guiding winds. The arrow deflecting skill and kunai have been lifesavers so far. So far I just finished the duel to get the Heavenly Strike skill, which took me a couple of tries to do

New patch is bringing a harder "Lethal" difficulty option (also bringing a separate easier mode for those who want less demanding combat):

You can change difficulties at any time. Normal and hard only have AI changes, as in, enemies on hard are more aggressive but do the exact same damage and have the exact same health. Lethal mode makes you and enemies die much faster. In some ways, lethal is easier than hard, because you oneshot everyone, but a stray arrow can kill you which is stupid. If they had an arrow proof charm or something, I'd say lethal is the way to play the game, but arrows are fucking annoying.

Also game is fun. The combat is surprisingly fun despite essentially being old assassin creed combat, but better. Perfect parries and perfect dodge counters feel super satisfying and let you really cut down a group of goons very quickly and stylishly. Standoffs are also a fun addition. Don't tell anyone but if you dodge and block at the same time, you beat every enemy option.

I've been playing on Normal and been wrecking dudes with my parries, but after last night's patch my timing is off. I'm pretty sure it's me, but it's odd that this is happening right after the patch and I'm wondering if they changed the Normal mode timing or something.

Still having a blast but I took a break to try out Skater XL which I'd been looking forward to but for anyone else who was interested in it my early impressions of XL aren't great.

Yeah it's $40 on PS4, I heard it's only $20 if you did early access on PC which is annoying and kinda why I wouldn't recommend it. For what I've played it's not worth $40. Want to spend more time with it to see if I just need more time with the controls. There's definitely a solid foundation for a skating game there it's just not quite scratching the itch for me

Not trying to derail the topic with Skater XL but I played more of it and it's starting to grow on me but it should be no more than $20 there's just not a lot of game there to justify the $40 price tag.

Back to Tsushima: I finally got past the first act *spoiler* where you free your uncle and open the second part of the island. Been slow going for me, but I'm enjoying every minute. Been juggling a few games but GoT has most of my interest.
