It's almost like the GOP don't give a shit about people. Honestly I think the only way they actually approve them is if they think they lose the senate in november if they do nothing. But if they think they hold the senate no matter what and can just continue to not vote on things for another 2 years especially during a dem presidency then nothing will get passed.

Seriously, fuck the GOP.

Oh I hadn't even realized how much the republicans were dragging ass on counting. Guess the turnout difference wasn't as big as I thought. We'll see where they end up I guess.

Just to follow up, yeah my instinct was more accurate than those projected numbers. Republicans ended up with only 414,921 votes compared to 544,062 for Democrats. 130,000 is a big difference.

Though, doesn't much matter I guess. I was just checking the counts from the 2016 Senate election...

Republicans only had 200,000 votes in the primary compared to Democrats' 400,000, but in the general Rand Paul (R) got over a million votes to Jim Gray's (D) 800,000.

Well, the best news is lots more people are voting regardless.

I think Muffin might actually not be completely wrong about this, at least for the US. Given that we have made virtually no progress controlling the virus during the lockdown period, it's entirely possible that they won't end up saving any lives at all. Granted, that speaks more to total incompetence on the Trump administration's part, but we should have known to expect that going in. Doing nothing about the virus would have had horrifying results, but there's a decent chance we'll end up with the same outcome anyway. If that's the case, maybe we should have let it happen sooner.

I wouldn't say we've made no progress, it's just because the Trump administration wavers between "not helping" to "actively worsening" you just have to look at it more as 50 different areas battling the virus mostly independently.

Some are doing better than others, even if the surges in other states have the national numbers trending back up dangerously. I do think the push for reopening early is going to make things a lot worse for everyone overall because you can't expect it to stay contained in just those states forever.

You look at the graphs for other countries dealing with this though and it's just embarrassing seeing how the US has utterly failed.

Honestly if the Republicans are doing badly enough to lose Kentucky, Mitch wouldn't be majority leader even if he won because the Republicans wouldn't have a majority. It's a good thing for the GOP that the national Dems appear to be about to spend major resources trying to win in Kentucky, Texas, Georgia, etc. again. The national Dem party support also is probably not going to help local Dem candidates in those states, who are probably better off if they can distance themselves from the national party.

No, but we can compare various US states that have had more or less severe lockdowns, and we can compare the US to other countries that have had more or less severe lockdowns.

If you spend like five minutes doing this it becomes immediately obvious that there is pretty much no correlation whatsoever between "lockdown severity" and "covid deaths"

Compare the EU and US graphs. They have very different shapes.

(Of course, wave 2 is probably going to happen in the EU eventually, and wave 3 and 4, etc. until they either get a vaccine or get to herd immunity).

You cannot compare areas that never had exponential growth to areas that did. Or lump those areas together to compare to another country.

Compare New York to Italy or whatever. However lumping all of the United States when most didn't even have a real first wave before locking down is a fool's errand. A lot of these states people are worried about are having their first wave now not their second.

Compare deaths per capita and they aren't. More specifically, compare specific states to specific EU countries.

Every US state had different lockdown policy. Every EU country had different lockdown policy. Many of the worst performing US states had very restrictive lockdowns. Many of the best performing US states had little to no lockdowns at all. Same for EU.

There is little to no actual evidence (as in, looking at actual outcomes that have already happened) that lockdowns are effective at all. Any and all arguments that lockdowns have "saved lives" are based entirely on estimates, predictions, hypotheticals, and computer models.

Once you start comparing lockdown variations and population density it shows that they very much work.

Hell the science(this is based on... Evidence) alone tells you they work.

Not so much a shortage so much as circulation issues since people are spending coins less due to covid.

This is absolutely false.

Japan is over twice as dense as New York State (863 vs 421 people per square mile) and has had minimal lockdowns. They have eight deaths per million. New York state has 1,652 deaths per million.

NY has over 200x as many deaths per capita as Japan despite half the density and stricter lockdowns.
