Americans have a thought that infections only go around during the winter, and that summer is disease-free. Because that's what we tend to have.

Mostly because we don't live in the tropics.

This gives me a great idea for a movie, Alec Baldwin would be perfect for the lead

The film was about "a killer robot driving instructor who travels back in time for some reason. This robot, he's got a heartbreaking decision to make about whether his best friend lives ... or dies. His best friend's a talking pie!

I call it The Terminizor: An Erotic Thriller

This. It's really ridiculous. I get so many guests checking into the hotel with no masks. They usually bring it up because they see me wearing one. They'll mention that they have one in the car and can go get it if it's required. So I politely mention that it is still mandated to wear one in public here, but they always refuse to go get it. My bosses have told me I can't refuse service to anyone who refuses, and none of the other staff wears one... It's like, what's the point of even trying? No one's going to go out of their way, even in a dangerous global outbreak.

Remember when people were thought covid cases would go down in summer?

To be fair, very few people said that, and they were always wrong anyway.

The intelligent people said that the virulence of the virus might go down in warmer weather, the way normal flu does, but that we had no way to know until it happened. Most of that talk usually ended with "Well, we'll see what happens come June."

But the entire scenario is incredibly complex, and it's not as if there's only one variable at play anyway, so even if the virulence of the virus DID go down in summer, other factors could still increase rate of transmission over time .

People looking for an easy, quick, magical solution to this that makes it all go away have always been fooling themselves, right from the very beginning. That's not how any of this works. That's never been how any of this works.

It's been kind of clear almost from the very beginning that the only real answer to this is to flatten the curve and try to slow infection over a long enough time for viable treatments or vaccines to come into play, because the only other alternative is really to just let everyone get sick and wait for herd immunity to kick in. It was never going to be a case of "Well, we'll all just hide for a few weeks/months, and then when we come back out again it'll all be gone. Whee!"

Mead posted...

Yes, because more disorder, disorganization, and factionalization is exactly what we need right now. That would totally fix all of our problems with no possible negative side-effects of any kind.

Is it actually spiking or are we just testing more?

Although if it is spiking, it *might* have to do with the fact that some idiots in government allowed widescale protests where people were shoulder-to-shoulder, often without masks (although, again, I'm not sure either masks or social distancing actually make a difference any more because, if they did, the protests wouldn't have been allowed).

Eh, pulling it off that quickly would have been a tremendous logistical challenge. You would have needed to preemptively supply everyone in the country with enough food and other necessities for the month and suspend all rent, mortgage, and property tax payments for the period to account for people not working, to say nothing of the nightmare that would be organizing emergency home repairs (which requires a supply chain of many steps, plus professional labour). Truly essential workers (mostly utilities, medical, and emergency services) would basically need to be confined to their workplaces to avoid potentially being contaminated (and good luck dealing with those services collapsing if the virus starts making its way through those workforces). And that's not counting the military presence that would be needed to effectively keep the entire country on house arrest, nor the logistical nightmare it would be to test everyone before lifting the lockdown.

It wouldn't be impossible, no, but that would be something that would need to be planned and prepared for long in advance of the pandemic actually happening and require extensive, unquestioning cooperation from everyone involved. It's a lot less simple than simply "everyone needs to cooperate for a month."
