Whoa, Pokemon dropped.

Well, your write-up makes sense. Also I have to agree that the song really made the opening.

Here's the Japanese version, which I think has better editing/flow and a song that's just slightly less catchy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-lEahV5Q_o

Interesting to see how they rearrange the opening and spliced in some scenes from the actual episodes for the English version.

Interesting, I would never have pegged that as the inspiration given the rap style of vocals for Danny Phantom. But I think I hear the influence.

62. The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson - Mega Mana
https://youtu.be/hnBvEScJyPI

Unique: 3.75
Story: 4
Music: 5
Animation: N/A
Personal: 3.5
Average: 4.0625

Ill be honest, this is not the kind of intro I had in mind when I decided to do this topic. But it is an intro, so its eligible.

My first instinct was theres no attempt to tell a story here, any more so than with the intro to a show like Saturday Night Live. But then I started thinking about it differently as depicting the personality of the host. And with that perspective, theres a lot more of a sense of narrative here than your average talk show. Granted, the personality that comes across here is kind of like somebodys drunk uncle goofing around at a party, but Ferguson seems like a believable person, not just another grinning face hosting a late show (Im looking at you, Jimmy Fallon).

The Unique factor wasnt easy to score either. On the one hand, it doesnt seem all that novel, its just a guy messing around with puppets and pretending to play the drums. On the other hand, I cant think of another intro like this offhand and it does stand out in a memorable way. So thats worth something. And if it seems like Im basically winging it on this one, youre right.

Finally, I thought the song was just okay, but the Music score really benefited by how much the song sets the mood and works with the visuals.

Danny Phantom did manage to relay the plot in a good way that wasnt just pure narration. But theres much more to the Story score, which was the toughest and most punishing factor for the majority of intros. Story also depends on how much personality is conveyed for the characters, how much the intro develops the world of the show, and how much of the tone of the show is conveyed. So it might seem counterintuitive, but many of the intros near the top of the list with the highest Story scores dont clearly articulate the premise of the show, but they tend to convey a very strong sense of atmosphere or a characters perspective with a lot of depth. I feel like its the kind of aspect where you know it when you see it, and I think thatll make more sense later on the list.

61. Naruto (German opening) - Bossman_Coolguy

Unique: 3.75
Story: 1.5
Music: 6
Animation: 4.5
Personal: 5.25
Average: 4.2

Kind of weird that this was apparently a German intro with English lyrics.

Anyway, this is a mostly conventional intro, with a couple unusual traits like the visual distortion at around 0:38, the colorless segment at 0:22, and the Brady Bunch style layout with character faces near the end.

Theres hardly any story evident from this sequence, and Im not even sure why they bothered with a narration backstory if all it was going to tell us was 12 years ago a 9-tailed fox suddenly appeared, which means absolutely nothing without watching the show. There were some hints as to the main characters personality to prevent the Story score from coming in lower, but not much.

What I liked most about this intro was the theme song, which had some competent rapping (at least by the standards of TV intros), and some cool musical elements.

Finally, the animation was okay. A little sloppy in parts and never particularly impressive, but not too bad. Nothing more to say about this one.

60. Doctor Who - RyoCaliente
https://youtu.be/XY2pFZniOAs

Unique: 3
Story: 0.5
Music: 7
Animation: 4.75
Personal: 6
Average: 4.25

Its tough to score this intro too high on the Unique factor given that it owes so much to the Doctor Who intros that have come before, many of which took a lot more chances with experimental visuals than this one. Its not a direct imitation of any of the prior intros (unless you consider it separate from the 2005 series with Christopher Eccleston), but some variation of the time vortex appeared in other intros, to say nothing of the recurring theme song.

It was sad to have to assign that Story score, but theres just no way to award a good score for that factor on this intro. I mean its a police telephone box flying through some kind of wormhole. How much can you take from that knowing nothing else about the show? What little I could award for Story comes mostly from the mood set by the wonderfully surreal theme song (and this is a great version of the theme song).

Im not too impressed with the visual effects on this intro. It has a kind computer-generated feel to it that hasnt aged too well. That being said, Ive always liked the intro personally, and my enjoyment of it hasnt really diminished with time.

Yeah, picking the "best" DW intro was kind of tough. This is one of my favourite tracks, but I could've gone with one of Matt Smith's or Peter Capaldi's as they showcase a bit more space- and time travel, respectively, but I don't like those tracks as much.

Thinking it over I probably should've gone with Capaldi's rock intro. Ah well.

Unique: 5.5
Story: 2.25

Personal: 5
Average: 4.5625

This intro gives me a weird sense of nostalgia even though Im sure I hadnt seen it before. A lot of shows aimed at young children tend to be patronizing, but theres something refreshingly genuine about this.

The intro has a fairly unique presentation, which makes me think of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood of Make-Believe, if it was haunted. My favorite part had to be the effect of the water inside the bottle, which actually looked really good for the time (in the 90s). In fact, I couldnt tell if the waves were animated or exactly how they did that, but I decided against giving this a score for Animation because its mostly puppetry.

I liked the theme song, with that melodic whoo (which was nicely timed with the glow of the owls eyes). The song nicely sets the tone, assuring its audience that although the show is about ghosts, its not going to be too scary.

As with many of the intros, theres not much story beyond giving us the premise of the show, namely a bunch of spooks live inside the bottle. And theres just so much personality that comes across from the cut-up sheets flying through the air. But I feel like I might have liked this show if I had watched it at the appropriate age!

58. MacGyver - ZeroSignal620

Unique: 1.5
Story: 2.25
Music: 6.75
Animation: N/A
Personal: 7.75
Average: 4.5625

As you can tell from my Personal score, I really really wanted to rank this one higher, but couldnt justify scoring it well on most of the factors. This is one of those intros that gives me some heavy nostalgia, and while its nothing particularly deep or even unique, I cant help but enjoy it.

What Ive always liked about Macgyver is theres a bit of Batman to him. He wins by using his brains and improvising with whatever is at hand (which contrary to popular opinion is rarely a paper clip). And that mostly comes across in the early part of this intro. Before we even see Macgyvers face, we see him working with his hands to make stuff, which is a nice touch. After the explosion, the intro becomes far more derivative, and Macgyver comes across as a generic action hero. But at least upfront, the intro took a more interesting approach.

Aside from showing us the premise, there are some glimpses of Macgyvers personality that comes across in subtle ways, most notably that exhale he does at the end. It may not seem like much, but it shows hes basically an ordinary guy, rather than some invincible super cop.

The theme song is a bit dated, but still undeniably catchy and provides a good sense of energy that suits the visuals (aside from the moment where they introduce the actors name and the camera stays on a still picture for far too long).

To sum up, its not the greatest intro objectively, but Im a fan.

57. Duckman - GameBopAdv

Unique: 7
Story: 1.75
Music: 5.25
Animation: 5.75
Personal: 3.5
Average: 4.65

The Unique and Animation factors need to be discussed together on this one for obvious reasons. While I have mixed feelings about the animation style on a personal level, theres no question it manages to create a distinctive look. Even the backgrounds are unique, filled with patterns of images constantly in motion. At any given time theres almost too much on the screen at once to process it all. Of course, the novelty lies almost entirely in the presentation, rather than the substance, so I cant bring myself to score it even higher on the Unique factor.

The theme song helps to set the tone and tell you what kind of a show youre in for. Even aside from the innuendo, you can tell from the musical style this is not a childrens cartoon. And the offbeat moody music was actually what I liked best about this intro.

The intro suffers the most on Story, since theres not much here besides a duck whos apparently a detective and is constantly horny. We get some hint of the basic premise and Duckmans personality, but mostly this is just a series of random bizarre images.

Huh? Cheers was a joke nomination? Thats one of the most famous TV intros of all time.

Anyway, I dont want to spoil much about the scores for intros to come, but I think what Im defining as Story is a bit different than what many people are thinking. Its not all about plot details, and, in fact, many of the higher scoring intros are ambiguous as to plot.

Unique: 2.75
Story: 5.25

Theres a definite effort to tell a story here, starting with the sight of clouds of smoke coming from the city skyline, followed by the source of the destruction, a bunch of knockoff Brainiac ships. Cut to Tony Stark watching from his penthouse, and then casually putting a team together like hes building an invention. Of course, we then get a generic battle sequence where the heroes inevitably save the day.

While its considerably better than a series of disconnected clips, the story of a group of heroes forming to fight bad guys doesnt have much depth without some reason to care about the individual heroes. And with the exception of a fantastic introduction to the Hulk, we get no feel for the personalities of the characters from generic scenes like youd see on ads for action figures. Contrast this with the intro to the Justice League cartoon, which manages to make each individual character seem uniquely iconic (even someone as uninteresting as Hawkgirl):

https://youtu.be/MXph0arElKs

The theme song is also on the generic side, but works very well with this intro, managing to make the combat seem more exhilarating than it actually is. And the animation is pretty average. Overall, its a decent intro, but it had the potential to be better.

My first impression: wtf about that bear dancing seductively.

Anyway, I mostly liked the visual presentation for this one, particularly the way the picture is always in motion around the still shots of various characters. But for me, the good on this intro was outweighed by the bad, including the mediocre rapping near the start, and the generally haphazard nature of the intro, which seems like its not sure what tone its going for.

The intro has a unique presentation without a doubt, but something more nuanced would be required for an even higher score in that factor (without having to resort to a bear that seems on the verge of being NSFW).

As for Story, Im getting some vague sense of it from the way the bear first appears in a slot machine with the word guilty, and later appears slamming down a gavel like a judge. This suggests the show is about some kind of arbitrary justice that makes a mockery of a real court proceeding. Where the sense of story fails, however, is the intro tells us nothing about the individual characters it displays. In fact, the camera zooms in on the chest of one female character, suggesting there is little more to her character than her, uh, obvious attributes.

I think ultimately how someone feels about this intro will come down to how they feel about Monobear, who clearly steals the show here.

Unique: 5.5

Average: 4.8

This is a really dark intro. Its almost entirely imagery involving blood, weapons, or having something to do with death. So its not difficult to get a feel for the tone of the show. But while the intro, if anything, overemphasizes the violent nature of the show where a bit more subtlety might have worked better, the intro gives hardly any clue as to what the show is actually about. Theres still enough emphasis on tone to leave the viewer with some impression of story, even without knowing anything about the characters depicted, but the intro lacks the depth needed to tell a more meaningful story through imagery.

While its mostly a series of clips, the intro has a distinctive feel with some novel parts, such as the way the text appears early on, and the violent struggle of the silhouettes near the end. And the animation looks pretty good for the more inventive scenes, although too often the intro just displays still pictures that are far less impressive.

As for the theme song, I really liked the operatic part near the start and would have preferred to hear them lean more into that, instead of the less interesting rock music that it turned into. Thats not to say the song was ever bad, just that like the rest of the intro, it isnt grabbing me and making me care.

Im not sure what they were going for with this intro, but it came across to me as a dark story about youth in America, judging from the kid smoking and firing a gun. Based on the description of the show Im reading, that takeaway is completely wrong, but thats what I got from this intro anyway.

While its basically just a series of clips, this intro doesnt score too badly on the Unique factor because it plays like a series of home videos, kind of like a darker version of The Wonder Years intro, which is a bit unusual. And the theme song works well with the visuals. Its not a particularly memorable song, but it serves its purpose of being atmospheric and giving you some clue what kind of mood to take away from the visuals.

Although I dont get what the show is actually about from the intro, the imagery has a sense of believability, and theres enough personality conveyed to warrant a respectable score on Story. But it could have been higher if the intro had a clearer and more cohesive narrative.

From what Ive seen, Jojo intros are always novel and distinctive, and this one is no exception, from the eye-catching bright colors to the way the shadow of a character appears to morph shapes. And the intro keeps changing gimmicks throughout as if constantly reinventing itself. The animation is also distinctly above average, with great lighting effects and a good sense of framing to create the maximum impact of the imagery.

As the upbeat funk music and disco ball lighting makes clear, this intro is a nonstop party. But what is it about? This intro tells me nothing about the show or the characters other than to suggest theyre going to spend most of their time dancing. What little sense of story I got comes from the way a couple characters appear next to some kind of alternate mirror image of themselves, suggesting another persona or transformation. But really, I dont have a clue what Im watching, and an intro should at least have some meaning without knowing anything about the show.

Its still a well designed intro, but there are better Jojo intros than this, including one still to come on this list.

My first thought was this is just letters coming together over a black background to form the title of the show. Surely I must be missing something, judging from the 225,000 thumbs up on the video. But after a few watches, it started to click for me, even if I still cant shake the feeling the intro is incomplete.

This intro is entirely about setting the atmosphere for the show. It doesnt even bother to waste your time with the pretense of a story or showing a single character. And in a way, thats kind of refreshing given all the intros that pretend to tell a story, while completely failing to do so. And in its own very limited way, there is some hint of a story to this intro, as the music and slow crawl of the letters set the mood. So by the time you finish watching this sequence, you go into the show feeling like you have some idea what to expect, even if you know nothing about the show.

Of course, the music is doing most of the work here. And I really like the song, which has a nostalgic 80s quality to it. But its not just the music. Theres also a cool visual effect starting with a close-up where its not initially clear what youre looking at, and then the letters gradually come into view. Its hardly groundbreaking animation, but it looks really good and fluid, enough for an average score in that factor.

And thats more than I expected to be able to say about some letters.

Ill wait until tomorrow to get started on the top 50. But in the meantime, a few questions for anyone following along.

  1. How are you liking the project so far?
  2. What was your favorite intro eliminated so far?
  3. If you feel bold enough to make a prediction, what intro or intros do you think will come in at the top?

  1. I'm enjoying the write-ups and your criticisms, which are put to very high-standards I must say!
  2. Either Metalocalypse or Sons of Anarchy since both of their songs are great.
  3. In no particular order: Cowboy Bebop, BTAS, Star Trek Original, Paranoia Agent, & Fresh Prince.

50. Night Walker - Raetsel_Lapin

I think what they were going for with this intro was a kind of film noir style. While it got a little dull seeing the clip of the guy walking the streets so many times, I liked the brooding, gloomy nature of the sequence.

The intro has a somewhat unusual tone with its moody atmosphere. The most interesting part was when those jagged lines start to run down the screen (at around 0:40), leading into most of the picture going red. Its not the easiest segment to describe, but it was cool, and Id have liked to see more stuff like that.

The music certainly fits the tone of the intro. Perhaps its the singer, but Im getting Depeche Mode vibes here, which is never a bad thing. And I liked the song a bit more each time I listened to it. Also, the animation is a bit better than it might at first appear. While theres a lot of still or repeated frames of animation, which brings down the score, theres also some nice details in the artwork, good use of colors, and I like the visual effect of those circles of light.

The worst scoring factor is Story because it pretty much all comes from atmosphere. Almost all we see is this guy, uh, night walking. But the intro nevertheless does a good enough job of setting the mood to leave the viewer with a feel for the tone of the show.

Not a bad intro, but it would have benefitted from a bit more variety of imagery.

  2. Either Kirby, FNL, or DiU OP1
  3. No idea!
Happy to see Stranger Things get some Unique points, I love its sense of scale and atmosphere just from some moving letters and a simple synth theme.

49. Star Trek: The Original Series - Anagram

This is probably my least favorite of all the Star Trek intros because theres just so little to it in the way of visuals, but I still enjoy it. The theme song remains a classic, and lends a sense of mystery and wonder to the sequence. And it was fairly novel for its time, albeit not exactly going where no intro had gone before (sorry, I couldnt resist).

Where the intro really suffers is the Story factor. All we really get is theres this grand starship on a journey of exploration in space. Nothing about the characters (not even the one whos narrating), nothing about the conflicts the crew encounters or the universe of the show, nothing but a quick summary of the premise. And in this case, I think thats fine. The intro was meant to be simple and to the point, and probably wouldnt have worked to show each member of the crew one by one. But I cant say theres much of a story to it.

I feel like I should have more to say about such an iconic intro that paved the way for all the great series to come, but theres not much more to say about it due to its simplicity.

48. Samurai Jack - Pirateking2000

Unique: 5.5

I really liked the first part of the intro, where the villain of all characters gives us a decent amount of story. Narration rarely works well, but it is done very effectively here. I also liked the mythological style of the artwork accompanying the backstory, which makes the confrontation of Jack and Aku seem like the stuff of legend.

I did not, however, care as much for the more traditional portion of the intro after Jack is thrown through time and we see him battling a bunch of inconsequential creatures. I cant say it was entirely generic, and the occasional use of panels was cool, making the action seem almost like a comic book. But most of the action scenes are the kind of stuff you can see in plenty of other intros.

The theme song is a bit weird, as Im not sure how the rap-ish song by will.i.am suits the premise or tone of the show. But it is a memorable song, and its timed quite well with the visuals. I didnt even notice it until rewatching the intro a couple times, but Jacks attacks in the panels are timed to coincide with the vocals saying his name, which is a nice touch.

All in all, its a well executed intro that gets the job done.

This is a mostly conventional cartoon intro, but I like the moments where it takes a chance and goes outside the norm. Probably the most interesting part comes near the end when the two lead characters wander into a field of nondescript people all colored gray. Then in a manner reminiscent of They Live, a device lets you see the alien hiding among them. And the animation when the fake person reveals its true monstrous appearance was really cool. Too bad more of the intro wasnt like that.

The only other part of the intro that stood out to me was when you see the people in the lineup moving left and right to the rhythm, and then once revealed as aliens, they continue to move to the music. Its a bit gimmicky, but still kind of novel, as opposed to showing off the fancy car or seeing the characters just walking around.

The animation looked good overall. There could have been a bit more detail to the human faces, which was oddly lacking most for the two main characters. But theres some good details to the aliens, particularly that one who transforms near the end. And although I didnt much care about the scenes with the car, there were some great visual effects involving it, such as the red glow from the brake lights as it zooms by and the way the animation is used to create a sense of rapid motion. Also, the theme song goes quite well with the visuals, although it could have been more memorable.

Finally, we get a good sense of the world these characters inhabit that helps the Story score, but not enough about the two main characters. The most personality that comes through was the funny glance one character gives his partner at pulling out the minuscule gun. If anything, the aliens convey a stronger sense of personality, and it seems like the intro was built around them.

Liking it well enough! Not super disappointed by my exits because there's great competition and great write-ups why.

What was your favorite intro eliminated so far?

Not sure OTTOMH. My Craigyferg nom had me watching hours and hours of Late Late Show after it placed, going dwn a rabbit hole filled with Kristen Bell, Morgan Freeman, Geoff Peterson... and Avengers:EMH starts out earwormy and excellent but the chorus suuucks. I disagree on preferring Justice League even if the iconography is nice. JLU has better music but still mediocre visuals.

If you feel bold enough to make a prediction, what intro or intros do you think will come in at the top?

Cowboy Bebop.

Yeah, I agree the animation isnt as good on the Justice League intro, and that intro as a whole probably has less story than Avengers. My only point in referencing the Justice League intro was the way they made each of the characters stand out and seem iconic was great. And I didnt get the same feel for each of the character introductions in the Avengers intro. The way they presented the Hulk was great, but the others seemed to me like they could have been done in a more interesting way.

Very fair point. As well, I believe (though haven't searched and verified) that EMH could be compared to JLU or Spectacular Spider-Man with the intention of a modular intro. I know they add/remove characters at the team shot in the very end, but don't recall if they do like thpse other two shows where they substitute out character shots for those appearing like Spidey has for secondary characters or JLU has for the heroes showing up between the big 6 stills.

Edit:
Apparently, they heard your review retroactively for season 2!
