Which One?

Would you do it? Anything you own you have to completely destroy...

Some exceptions:

- You can go back and apply/get essential type items like ID, Birth Certificate, Paasports, etc
- You keep any Achievements earned, such as HS/College grads
- You keep any purchased Digital Items stored in the Cloud, but you have to delete any Social Media pages, MB accounts (yup Gfaqs included) Steam Games, Bitcoin etc

So would you do it? (Poll Question)

Whats with some PotD users being so rich? What do you guys do? Or maybe just older or loans or have a SO that isnt in a low paying dead end job.

Id destroy all my possessions in a heartbeat for a million.

I mean, Id Destroy my possessions and start a new identity in a new country for a million...keeping friends and family.

Assuming this million isnt taxed, actually a million.

I'm on my way to being one, and even at rent to own price (which doubles the price) my house is significantly under 100k.

The problems I have is where would we live in the meantime and all the stuff I have that I either couldn't find again or outright couldn't be bought. I got personalized art for my birthday. My sister made me a personal card this year too. Plus years and years of physical copy game work. I have a Rune Factory file I started before our cat Smokey passed away I named after him and was bonding with him by telling him what 'he' was doing.

The money would be nice, but not worth it. This is one of the few liveable houses around here for sale. Hotel is out too, we have cats. I don't consider cats possessions.

A person's home alone can get them halfway there at times (or, in some areas, all the way). And keep in mind that if the house isn't paid off (which it generally isn't for most people), you'd still owe that money. A million sounds like a huge amount of money, but unless you're absurdly frugal and living in an area with a ridiculously low COL it's really not. And keep in mind it's *everything* you own, so whatever money is in the bank or in investments would go as well (keep in mind he even highlighted bitcoin).

At this point, there's a lot of older people here.

Offer me this deal when I'm in my late teens or early 20s I'd accept in a heartbeat. But at this point, I own my own house (no mortgage), own multiple vehicles, have no outstanding debts, and I've got about 40 years of accumulated possessions. Offer me this deal today and you can go fuck yourself.

If anything, it's a good metaphor for politics. There's a reason why most of the people who are super-keen on wealth distribution or debt forgiveness are the people who don't own anything and have mountains of debt.

Upper middle class, at best. Combined income between my wife and I is maybe $200K/year, with my wife being the principle earner. I'm a truck driver and my wife is a nurse practitioner.

My house is expensive mainly because I live in Eastern Massachusetts. It's not a huge mansion. 4 bed colonial. Could have a much larger house in another part of the country.

Also, we live within our means. I drive a Volvo I bought for $700 but my wife has a newer car. We don't spend frivolously. Only thing I waste money on is coffee and video games.

I'm just making sure.

Like technically legally I don't own the house but in spirit I do. Same with some of the items of my spouse's.

So I'm curious how that works. Since my kid is a minor and lives with his dad how does that count? My spouse is my spouse and we share stuff, but some stuff isn't technically mine. Stuff like that.

I just remembered that my name isn't on the house though at all.

this ranks up there as one of the stupidest scenarios.

I would never destroy the possessions I have. there are stories behind some of them (like my dad's military flag that was given to my one sister (who passed away in November) at his funeral, who then passed the flag right to me.), or the 43 inch smart tv that was last years main Christmas gift from two of my sisters, and one of my sisters friends (it was also a suggestion as a gift for me by the sister who passed, before she passed). and there are many other things that I treasure having (like a 9.8 slabbed Battle Beasts comic, from the 80's)

so this obviously is a hard no, and I didn't even waste the time to vote

Their possessions are their possessions, with the possible exception of certain high-ticket items that are actually owned by the parent who bought them and being used by the child. While a parent acts as custodian of a child's possessions, a child's possessions aren't a parent's possessions.

ChaosAzeroth posted...

If it's in your wife's name, it doesn't matter. It's still one of your possessions unless there were legal pre-marital stipulations. That's why people try to transfer things to third-parties during divorces because merely having something in just your name isn't enough.

Ehh the pet thing still makes that a no since that's like... Murdering what I consider family.

Despite using stuff my spouse is very clear that their stuff is theirs.

We don't call it out PS4, for example. It's always and universally in our home referred to as my spouse's.

I still don't have an ID or social security card tbh because it's not been considered a priority to replace lol.

But yeah if it wasn't for the pets thing with those rules I might bite the bullet as much as I'd hate to. But that's a no go. I basically claim all the cats to some extent or another. Not to mention Bob is definitely my cat. I'm already dreading his passing as it is.

No. Give me a day to prepare and hand over a small box of family heirlooms and photographs to my brother for the family's sake since he's the one with the wife and kid anyway, pfft it's not even a question. Assuming this is a tax free $1M I could replace everything I own and still have very close to $1M left.

My house alone is worth nearly a million (technically some of that is land value, so if I get to keep the title then I guess that changes the calculus a bit, but you're still asking me to, essentially, wipe out everything I've bought for what would amount to a fairly paltry gain). Between my vehicles, my computers, a pretty extensive retro gaming collection, and all the other odds and ends in my home, it would cost me at least a million to replace everything, and that's not counting the time involved (one of the things you increasingly grow to respect as you get older is that your time isn't free and should be treated as though it has monetary value).

Not to mention, some stuff just isn't replaceable. I have a few extremely rare collectibles and even a few one-of-a-kinds that I would most likely not be able to replace, and that's not even counting things that have sentimental value (I have a clock that's been in the family for over 120 years and has survived two fires). Some of my possessions are things I have put a great deal of time into making and crafting and a million bucks isn't going to give me that time back.

So yeah, hard no on that one.

Maybe Im just used to living in LCOL/MCOL areas (outskirts of salt lake city, center Oklahoma City, outskirts of Philadelphia) mixed with not looking for a while. Million dollar homes are gated mini-mansions...but I guess towards center city theyre closer to normal sized homes. A 20 minute drive makes a huge difference. Even if buying a home in any of those areas Id look around the $200,000 range...maybe Id look for a condo.

I guess collections could ramp up the value if theres rare pieces also. And most people here probably spend their money on items. I have a board game, video game, book, and comic collection and I consider all to be large, but realistically they add up to under 10k if you just grabbed a used copy, a bit more maybe with eBay copies considering some being hard to replace.

I spend apartment cost + 5-10k and feel I participate in luxurious activities and am not limited in what I do, but that also might be because Im just 28. I dont really see much Id want to spend the money on that Id really want and not feel guilty about. And the stuff I would spend it on wouldnt be a physical object as much as services or experiences. Even with a $1,000,000 budget to spend to on things I want (not used for VTSAX for early retirement) Id have difficulties spending that much other than buying a penthouse, but Id probably rather just rent an apartment still.

And the stuff I would spend it on wouldnt be a physical object as much as services or experiences.

That's the traditional stereotype of the Millennial - the assumption being that at some point the entire generation decided they'd never be able to crawl out of debt and afford anything worthwhile, so they opted for trying to live exciting or interesting lives instead. ie, they're less likely to value material possessions because they're less likely to be able to afford material possessions.

The older people on the board are still part of the generation where "He who dies with the most toys wins", and where it was expected to own your own house eventually, and generally by late 30s/early 40s is the point by which most Gen Xers have more or less switched away from renting and towards home ownership (with exceptions for people who live in cities like NYC where ownership is near impossible and rent's pretty much a requirement). So we're far more likely to spend money on things.

Granted, not everyone is going to conform to the cultural mindset of whatever generational cohort they belong to (I'm sure there are Millennials who aspire to own two-car garage houses with white picket fences, and I'm sure there are Gen Xers and even Boomers who rent and have little more than an emergency bag to their name because they love traveling and having experiences), but it does suggest that the political, historical, and socioeconomic conditions you grew up under probably shaped your worldview to some degree.
