Episode 5 of China is simply one of the best episodes of the series. Even though it's bullshit what happened to Aaron, I don't think I stopped laughing for a single second, especially in the immunity challenge and the camp scenes between the IC and TC.

Random question -

Anyone know if theres anywhere to watch TAR 30 & 31? Prime only has 1-29, and it doesnt look like CBS All Access has any TAR for some reason.

I believe buying the DVD is currently the only legal way to rewatch those seasons.

Anyway, BB22 spoilers:
Noms are Kevin and Tyler. Kevin is likely coming down with the veto with Ian as his replacement. Both Ian and Tyler are threatening to go home instead of the jury if they are evicted.

You know what I randomly miss from old school Survivor (aside from everything)? Presentation themes. Like, they'd take a theme related to that location and design the sets, challenges, rewards, and even an occasional twist after it. Pearl Islands was pirate-themed, Palau had a WWII theme, China really dove into the culture and lore of Ancient China, Gabon focused on the Garden of Eden, Guatemala was archeology-themed, etc. That was something really cool that we haven't seen in years, and was something that really helped seasons stand out from each other aesthetically.

Plus for many of the rewards they would dive into the culture of that location. Instead of just... random Chinese Takeout or something. I remember I would make a wishlist of what locations I'd love to see in the future - Greece, Madagascar, Peru, perhaps another region of Australia, etc. Too bad they're gonna be in Fiji forever. :(

I always knew there was little hope any Survivor would film until mid-late 2021. 41 and 42 are already cast, but they'd need to go through the same quarantine process as BB22 contestants. So they'd need to have like, 10 alternates prepared for each season, which is hard because a. it's gonna be a lot harder to cast said alternates at this point and b. It's one thing to get a bunch of returnees to completely isolate themselves from the world (even digitally) for two weeks knowing there is a very slim chance they will actually get to play, which is what BB did. It's another thing to get newbies dying to live out their dream to do the same thing.

I suppose the best chance we would have had is if they made 41 a returner season and pushed the colts for 41 and 42 back a season each.

TAR5 Complete. Lots to unpack here. Some season 31 spoilers in this writeup too in case anyone is avoiding.

  1. TAR5 - Colin & Christie
  2. TAR2 - Oswald & Danny
  3. TAR1 - Kevin & Drew
  4. TAR3 - Teri & Ian
  5. TAR4 - Jon & Al
Not a terribly unpopular opinion, but this season is incredibly good - mostly due to the strength of the cast. Even the lesser teams that dropped early felt worthwhile. My recollection of this season was also pretty off on a number of things. For one - Charla and Mirna are actually kind of great. This was not my initial opinion some 15-odd years ago, but they won me over this time. Mirna's eternal victim complex still gets a little annoying at times, but they added a ton to the season. I also like Chip a lot more than I remembered too. He's more fun that I recall, even though it's really weird they let him run the race by himself this season. Linda and Karen are awesome too (this hasn't changed) and they're #2 on my list. Brandon and Nikki were less of the "dumb model" stereotype that I was expecting too, even though the Jesus shit was grating.

Colin and Christie are the last big ones. I was shocked to find out that Colin is actually not as much of a psychopath as my old memories believed. Like, yes, he's intense, but aside from the cab incident, and the Ox being broken, he's surprisingly even-keel through most of the season. To the point where they're actually a little boring through the first few episodes. This was wild to revist, and realize that he's actually not that much different from his Season 31 self, aside from slightly better frustration management skills. It's also a bit of a bummer that the end of the season came down to weird flight stuff that basically locked Chip & Kim into winning. The ending could have been so much more exciting without that 10 minute lead. The Colin & Christie loss is a bit easier to take knowing they get redemption 26 seasons later, though.

Long story short - best season, and probably stays that way through the entire run, but I suppose we'll see. Moving on, Season 6 falls in the same bucket as Season 4 in that I don't remember much, save for the existence of Jonathan & Victoria. Not particularly looking forward to this one, but maybe I'll be surprised.

Even though this isn't the worst season I've seen outright (cough 19), this is probably gonna end up being the hardest of the dominant awful cliques I've seen succeed.

In 18, the underdogs were honestly pretty awful too (for the most part) so it was whatever seeing that clique dominate.

In 19, the least-offensive of the clique won, so that was okay.

In 20, the outsiders were given multiple opportunities to come back and potentially make it a game and squandered every single one with their own ineptitude, so at least they were given a chance.

In 21, the dominant alliance fractured halfway through, allowing some of the underdogs to go relatively far.

But this looks like it's just gonna be a bland boring steamroll.

Please David, Davonne or Kevin win HoH tonight.

Watching last night's episode.

This is so fucking uncomfortable.

Nicole needs to shut the fuck up. Either play the way you're gonna play and do it with conviction, or don't. Don't cry about it in private to look like a good person.

On the flip side, Dani is a fucking sociopath and if she gets what's coming to her it won't be soon enough.

This is the problem with a single alliance dominating everything, You either have the dominant alliance bitching and whining the SECOND anything doesn't go their way (which leads to them becoming more unpleasant every week), or you have the outsiders completely lost and making bad moves to target each other, because they don't know they're outside of a main alliance.

I think it's more option B. You win early and you keep winning and you start to feel invincible and untouchable. The power goes to your head, and any disruption to their power fucks things up, so you get more pissed off. There's a reason why, despite me not liking them personally, Level 6 was actually pretty likable (to most people) for almost all of BB20. Because FOUTTE beat them and humbled them occasionally, and forced them to play from a position of weakness. If you never lose challenges, you don't know how to deal with difficulty, and you get seasons like this one.

I would still argue that L6 still dominated start to finish, because even though FOUTTE managed to win and not bungle up two pre-jury HoHs, L6 still successfully sacrificed the person they (correctly) felt was less instrumental to their success.

To this day I assert that the worst thing to happen to BB20 was Winston going home week 3 instead of Brett. Not only was Winston less unlikable than Brett as a character, but he was enough of an unpredictable hothead that he could have actually managed to fuck up L6.

But another part of it is, whether we like to admit it or not, people are naturally drawn to other people who are like them. And since like 60-70% of any given BB cast is preppy white 20-somethings (as much as I complain about lack of diversity in Survivor casting, BB is much worse), they tend to bond instantly and gang up on the minorities/eccentrics/old folks. And it gets old quickly year after year.

Oh, and one more thing, the dominant alliance is almost always convinced that America is gonna love and root for them, and that attitude REALLY comes off in their confessionals, and more often than not they're wrong.

Anyway, currently Cody is the least-offensive member of the dominant alliance, so I guess right now I'm hoping he wins based on the realistic expectation that none of Davonne/Kevin/David/Enzo are getting anywhere near finale night.
