Just finished the penultimate episode of TAR11. Thank God this season is almost over.

TAR11 complete. I have now, officially, watched every season of Amazing Race in its entirety. And MAN that was a rough one. Not the WORST season I've ever watched, but it's down there.

TAR11 is at the bottom for me for so many reasons:

-Worst winners in the history of the show (not to mention that, as a unit, they were the least-deserving of all 11 teams to be considered "All-Stars;" Eric & Jeremy as the originally appeared would have been deserving but as it is they picked the worse member of each original team)
-An entire season of Mirna instead of a somewhat-tolerable 7 episodes (and she was MUCH worse, if that were somehow possible; the way she talked to/about Charla was actually quite uncomfortable)
-The aforementioned gap
-Every single team being a shadow of their former selves in some way or another (this seems to be a problem with TAR returnees in general, much more so than Survivor/BB)

Honestly probably more reasons that I simply have blocked out of my mind.

Who are some returning teams that you'd say were improved upon by returning (instead of being a shadow)?

Honestly? No one from TAR11.

The cast was either miserable or overcompetitive, this eliminating any charm they had their first time around.

David & Mary were less bad in 11. I think that's the only improvement for me.

Brenchel, Jessica & John, and Afghanimals were significant improvements in 24 from their original seasons.

I hated that Colin/Christie weren't on that season to act as some sort of counter-balance.

So surprised when I first found out that they weren't going to be on the All-Star season. Instead, we got a hashed out team that ended up winning.

This is the cast I think they should have gone with, trying to keep the general competence of the season relatively equal:

Nancy & Emily (TAR1) - Kevin & Drew were fan favorites, but it's clear Drew just wasn't ready for the season anymore, and it was an extremely diminished performance. So why not bring back the OTHER fan favorite team, to give the season a third F/F team as well?

Joe & Bill (TAR1)

Oswald & Danny (TAR2)

Teri & Ian (TAR3)

Kelly & Jon (TAR4) - We don't need Eric & Danielle, so just replace them with a better bickering couple from a season that wasn't represented.

Charla & Mirna (TAR5)

Gus & Hera (TAR6) - Uchenna & Joyce were popular winners, but they were winners nonetheless. I think you can replace replace with Gus & Hera to AfAm representation, TAR6 representation, AND it diversifies the relationships among the M/F teams, so it's not just a cast entirely of couples.

Rob & Amber (TAR7)

Marion & D.J. (TAR8) - If you want someone from TAR8 represented, you either have Marion/D.J. or Linda/Rolly...and Rolly would probably be too young. So these two replace David & Mary as the small town duo, and that both reduces TAR10 to one team, while simultaneously giving TAR8 representation.

Eric & Jeremy (TAR9) - Eric & Danielle sucked, but Eric & Jeremy in TAR9 were pretty much the only stand-out team aside from the winners (who, as we established with Uchenna & Joyce's removal...no winners). Plus, Eric & Jeremy were the strongest team ever at the time of All-Stars' airing (they still are), so give them a chance.

Michael/Stassi could have been interesting as well, but yeah I think Marion/DJ is the correct pick.

18's cast was pretty solid as far as All-Stars go except for Amanda & Kris. Replace them with Terrence & Sarah to give the unrepped TAR13 a team while reducing the overrepped TAR14, plus they fit the "Unfinished Business" theme much better (having to turn around at the fast forward because Terrence couldn't eat meat).

24's cast is a mess. Honestly they could have just done Heroes vs. Villains.

I gender-balanced even though TAR has never given a shit about gender balancing. I focused on 19-23 but had to go back as far as 16 for some FF teams.

And if TAR31 were a full returnee season, focusing on 25-30...

Misti & Jim (25) - Yes, I know it would have been awkward since Jim died between filming and broadcast, but they would have been cast under this scenario. The fact that TAR25 had no representation in 31 as it was was a sin since it's arguably one of the three most popular seasons ever, and without a doubt top 5. Its main villains would HAVE to be on All-Stars under these conditions.

Kym & Ally (25) - A strong F/F team from said season would be a lock as well.

Jeff & Jackie (26) - The only blind date team that actually continued their relationship after the race, plus their BB appearance cemented them as CBS staples to some degree.

Denise & James Earl (27) - Likable parent/child team that went far.

Tanner & Josh (27) - With Justin & Diana out due to a pregnancy, Tanner & Josh would probably be the second TAR27 rep and fill the token strong M/M team. They were likable enough and their exit probably qualifies them for a second chance.

Tyler & Korey (28) - They got this one right.

Becca & Floyd (29) - This one too.

Henry & Evan (30)
Kristy & Jen (30)
Alex & Conor (30)
Lucas & Britney (30) - I mean it seems like they like to disproportionately represent one season in returnee casting and the final 5 from 30 was just so damn good, plus it checks off a bunch of boxes - a female-dominated bickering couple, a strong F/F team, an inconsistent, goofy M/M team, and a team that made a big "whoops!"

Flo is a monster and Zach is an unbelievable saint. Dude deserves that money even if Im not sure Id consider that a satisfying ending. Flo wasnt awful early on, but I forgot how much it ranked up until the finale where it basically exploded. Woof.

I didnt find myself particularly attached to any team this season. I think Ian crosses the line from being a likable curmudgeon into being an asshole a few too many times, but Teri is a badass. Ken and Gerard were probably a close #2. I also thought the early crusade against Derek and Drew was super weird because they...didnt seem to do anything to deserve it? I dunno.

On to season 4, which I am...uh...I cant recall anything about 4 from my original watch.

It's important to look at TAR3 in context. It came on the heels of Rob & Brennan winning TAR1 in dominant fashion, and Chris & Alex winning TAR2 in slightly less dominant fashion. So going into TAR3, there's only one team of quote unquote alpha males in the cast, and based on precedent, the twins were the biggest threat to the rest of the cast. Honestly, it's a miracle they DIDN'T make the final 3, given how weak on paper the rest of the cast was (especially with Teri & Ian and Flo & Zach as two of the final 4).

ken & gerard were great. their friendship/partnership with the twins, and the crazy circumstances surrounding leg 11 were one of the storyline highlights of the season imho

flo sucked though. i'm sure she's grown up a lot since then but their win after the meltdown on the bikes/boats in vietnam was just unfortunate, for lack of a better description.

Actually you know something? As an individual, Danny was better in 11. In 2, Oswald absolutely carried that team, but in 11 Danny came out as a great character in his own right, even if, as a pair, they weren't quite as awesome (still the best of the season though).

Im surprised that vets have convinced themselves to think this way, knowing the pitfalls that come with it.

Random thought: since audience interaction seems to be a thing BB wants, but we as an audience don't necessarily want powers that make houseguests keep with the status quo out of fear of powers, what about:

1. There is a audience voted ranking of players given to the house each week, maybe listed on one of the screens. It is only a survey/ranking each week and no additional info/context on why they are ranked this way is given. and
2. Beforehand they are told that there are no audience-voted powers or buybacks, so they would not have to fear whoever is in #1 getting a power from an audience vote.

So there are no explicit powers given for ranking high or low, but it could affect the houseguests each week, maybe making them more likely to try things if they are low (assuming they are bothered enough with the constant reminder that they are hated). It's not actual BB in that there is outside info given, but it's still up to the houseguests choice how they use this public ranking info.

I feel like knowing America hates you would lead to a lot of extra stress, and possibly even cause a self-eviction or two. And given the nature of recent seasons, the players on the low end would likely start to be shunned by the others so they aren't hated by association (of course that could lead to those houseguests likely dropping so lol).

Yeah, that is partially the point. Generally, a dominant alliance will likely be lower in the rankings and the "shunned" people usually are higher up, so with that knowledge, the dominant aliiance may switch things up and there would be a bit more fluidity, hopefully.

I mean, that kinda happened last summer. Michie realized that Six Shooters were picked to play in the egg comp because the audience hated them, and shortly after that he and Holly made their final four with Cliff and Nicole.

Bad season is bad. The finale is a rough crew when somehow David & Jeff are the most palatable team there, and they ended up completely hosing themselves. Reichen & Chip suck, and Jon & Kelly were both pretty shitty people too. Jon primarily but Kelly wasnt great either.

There were some better mid-tier teams than I remembered. Jon & Al were still best, but Tian & Jaree were pretty great too. Steve & Dave were alright too for how long they lasted.

Very excited to wash the bad taste out of my mouth with season 5.
