Yeah, but just 'cause they call is a sub doesn't mean the locals would in any other context. If you say sub, I know what you mean, but around here it's hoagie country.

On the note of distinctions, I usually think of a grinder as something that comes on a kaiser roll, rather than a club roll. (And it's usually a hot sandwich.)

The only time Ive heard grinder used here is a local pizza place that sells grinders, but otherwise its subs. Have heard of hoagies, but nobody here uses it as far as I know and Ive never seen anyone use heroes

Grinder seems to be a western-New England thing. I first heard it when I first went to college in western Mass, even though I grew up in eastern Mass and never heard it. They also referenced it on Fanily Guy, which is filled with New England in-jokes and references, with the app that FFD mentioned.

Right now I call them subs mostly because that's what they are called on menus around here.

But on the occasions where I visit NY I totally start calling them heroes again.
