Ahead of its Cup Series race Wednesday night in Martinsville, Virginia, NASCAR said it is banning the flying of Confederate flags at its races and other events.

"The presence of the Confederate flag at NASCAR events runs contrary to our commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fans, our competitors and our industry," NASCAR said in a statement on its website.

"Bringing people together around a love for racing and the community that it creates is what makes our fans and sport special. The display of the Confederate flag will be prohibited from all NASCAR events and properties."

This week, driver Bubba Wallace, the first full-time African American driver in the Cup Series since 1971, called for NASCAR to go further than 2015, when it asked fans not to bring the Confederate flags to races.

This week, driver Bubba Wallace, the first full-time African American driver in the Cup Series since 1971, called for NASCAR to go further than 2015, when it asked fans not to bring the Confederate flags to races.

Wallace, 26, became the first African American driver since Wendell Scott (1963) to win an event sponsored by NASCAR when he won a trucks series race at Martinsville in 2013.

Martinsville is one of the tracks where Confederate flags are often seen in the parking lots and campgrounds, but Wednesday's race will have no fans. NASCAR won't allow limited numbers of fans in the grandstands until Sunday at the Cup race in Homestead, Florida.

NASCAR was formed in 1948 and runs three national series -- Cup, Xfinity and trucks.

After learning a few years back that some capitol buildings still had the Confederate flag flying above them I can't say I'm all that shocked about them being common in a sport with a high redneck demographic.

Seriously, does any other country still fly the flags of traitors and other things like invaders, colonizing empires, and past kingdoms that haven't existed for centuries as well? Genuinely curious here. I know this country is full of nutjobs but surely we can't be the only ones with this kind of nonsense going on...right? Right?

You might not know this yet -- because you just learned about flags flying over state buildings -- but the US revolted against the British Empire. And it's actively engaged in colonization and has been widely criticized for imperialism. And many nations have regional flags

Im from rural Georgia originally, grew up around lots of friends and family that had the flag on all sorts of stuff and loved any opportunity they had to tell others that it wasnt about racism and just a symbol of southern pride and culture.

Its bullshit. The south has a ton of great culture all on its own and doesnt need a flag that represents a group that wanted to literally destroy our country so that they could keep owning people and get rich off of the forced labor. That flag should be in museums and textbooks so we can learn from our history, but thats about it.

If you really want to wear a shirt or a cap with the flag on it then that is your absolute right, but dont expect any private organizations to let you show off your symbol of bigotry.

Yeah, all snarky comments aside this is pretty much on point. Its the reason why the flag is painted on the roof of the car in the Dukes of Hazard. Still problematic, just like a few other symbols of this country. We're just too stuck in the past and can't get over ourselves long enough to actually address any of it.
