Seriously, does any other country still fly the flags of traitors and other things like invaders, colonizing empires, and past kingdoms that haven't existed for centuries as well? The American flag is literally associated with treason, invasion, and colonization. You might not know this yet -- because you just learned about flags flying over state buildings -- but the US revolted against the British Empire. And it's actively engaged in colonization and has been widely criticized for imperialism.
