Board 8 > Fate/Mythic Fragment II: A Grail War RPG/CYOA thingy

Welcome back to Fate/Mythic Fragment! You may remember the original from somewhere around a year ago, and this will be fairly similar. It's basically a CYOA, with some RPG elements that stay mostly behind the scenes. (Mythic is the system I'm using) B8 will run a single character by voting, like a regular CYOA. The setup is procedurally generated, and NPCs will be making their own decisions and doing stuff under roughly the same rules that apply to B8's character.

The core concept is based on the Fate franchise, but I think it should be at least remotely followable even if you're not familiar. In most Grail Wars (maybe this one, maybe not!) you have teams of Servants (powerful figures from history, mythology, or in our case also other fictional works; sorted into various appropriate Classes) and Masters (mages with less raw power that can contract with the Servants and order them with Command Seals) duking it out in a battle royale setting. Most participants are pretty cagey about their identities, and Servants especially will prefer to go by their Class title rather than their True Name- half the fun I think is trying to figure out who you're fighting, and how you can exploit somebody once you know who they are. Some Masters might be original characters, but most people you encounter will be from something. There could be spoilers involved for any media invoked, but I will try to avoid them.

Changes from last time: I'll try to be a bit more clear when writing scenes, even when you're not there. I'm planning to formally announce deaths and identities, but that's up for debate as I'd kinda rather leave more room for suspense. I also added some Command Spell mechanics that should help avoid some of the sudden anti-climactic kills on Servants.

I'm putting the finishing touches on my setup, and while I'm doing that let's work on B8's character! It has been previously determined that you are a Master, and you already picked your Catalyst so I know who your Servant is as well. Aiming to start tomorrow evening, but we'll see how votes go and how fast I can finish this setup and stuff like that.

You are Marcel Blackburn, a young man who probably shouldn't be here. Then again, what do you have to lose? Either you win this thing and cleanse your mind, or you lose and you die- either way Quo Vadis will be sorely disappointed, and isn't that what we all want? Slip agrees with you. He usually does. Anyway, that's how you got to this made-up city on the moon or whatever, carrying around a weird little circle guy.

Somehow, you've found a quiet corner out of the public eye, not that anybody was really paying attention to you anyway. You set the little circle guy on the ground, and focus your energy on it, causing it to float a bit off the ground. That's probably not needed for the summoning ritual, but Slip does like when you make things float. Gotta add that dramatic flourish, y'know? Light emanates from your catalyst as you invoke it. No turning back now!

There's a flash of light, and as your eyes adjust, there materializes before you a woman about your age. Not the worst lookin' one you've seen, either- she's a bit stocky, with old-timey looking clothes and a giant wrench. "Agatha Heterodyne, Berserker class! You're my Master, right? We've got work to do!" She gets distracted before you can even formulate a response, and starts investigating the alleyway while humming to herself. Looks like the catalyst worked, then! But now what's the plan?

1) We need more info on this city. Let's scout around a bit.
2) Uh, let's get to know each other a BIT before we get to the fighting and such.
3) There are lots of unimportant looking people milling around. Let's see what they know.
4) Turn her loose and see what she wants to do.

You two (well, three, but you don't think Slip's gonna help much) have a long road ahead of you. It'd be silly not to get an idea about your new partner before rushing in. You and Agatha chat for a while about your backgrounds and abilities. Apparently she's been in a Grail War before, but wasn't summoned properly and wasn't able to do much. She almost qualifies as a Caster, but since she works more with science and technology instead of magic proper, maybe that's why she needed a little help from the Berserker class. She's a bit disappointed that you didn't bring her any materials to build with, or weaponry to improve. You're pretty sure Berserkers are supposed to be pretty tough in a fight, and you wouldn't want to cross this one, but it seems like she's a bit more well-rounded than you expected. Easier to communicate with, too, but she does tend to get distracted easily, and hum to herself.

You fill her in on your gravity manipulation powers and what little you know about your surroundings. No need to give her your whole life story or introduce her to Slip, though. That's probably enough to go off for now- better get moving before somebody finds you.

Fate question: if two Masters use catalysts for the same class in the same war can you get two of the same class? Or does the second become its next best class? Or does the second just not work?

Second becomes its next best class, I think... provided that Heroic Spirit qualifies for said class (and it's available.)

The Grail just puts them in whatever class. Generally there's a class that would make the most logical sense for them to be in, like Arthur/Arturia being a Saber but they can qualify for more than one class so they can be put in a different one. Hercules, IIRC, is said to be qualified for every class with the exception of Caster, as an example. If all qualified classes for a Heroic Spirit are already filled... I assume it would fail?

Berserker is a bit of a special case because the Summoner can force it by adding some lines into the Summon Ritual if they so choose.

Not 100% positive on all this but to the best of my knowledge that's how it works. But Holy Grail Wars have their rules bent all the time so there's no hard and fast rules really.

Officially, catalysts are on a per-hero basis instead of a per-class basis, and iirc if you try to use a catalyst for a hero that's already summoned you'll just get a servant that's generally compatible with you instead of the one you wanted (same as if you managed to summon without one entirely)

Of course, in this case, Tom had different characters of different classes prepared and he's referring to them by class for ease of reference/to not tell us who we could'e had.

(Those two know more than I do about this stuff but yeah. As for this specifically, it's possible but a longshot to get two of the same class; it'd probably involve shenanigans, like last time when Rider Master Asia summoned Agatha as a second, false Caster. I just roll up three options, and then whatever you don't pick I re-roll, so that the other two items don't give you any hints. Which maybe is a bit silly when the poll was so long ago that even I don't remember what other options you had :P)

You're definitely in the bad part of town. There's a little shanty town nearby- it might not be the most defensible or resource rich area, but it'd probably be a pretty good place to lose yourself if you wanted to lie low for a bit. Does that sound like a good idea?

Ah, what a pain. These police guys were nothing special, but they had numbers, and had managed to surround Caster. The rain would help them, but Caster was true to their Class and struggling in a melee fight, and Caster's Master was no great direct combat Mage either. Suddenly, a new figure entered the fray, interposing themselves between Caster and the enemy. A young woman to the side addressed the police force. "Would it not be easier to let Grail Warriors deal with other Grail Warriors? What will you accomplish by dying here?" Sensing the turning tides, the thuggish police took the opportunity to retreat. Caster's Master turned to thank the newcomers, but they were already starting to leave. "It's to our mutual benefit to keep the government out of our business. Don't think this makes us allies."

Your wanderings take you to the commercial district, which seems quite active. Lots of people, lots of stuff....and lots of tension for some reason. There are probably a few options for you.

1) Try to find some sort of shop where you can get some supplies
2) Try to find lodging
3) Try to find a place to work on things
4) Try to figure out what's going on
5) Look elsewhere

No worries!

For Fate/Zero, I think it broke down like this:

The Einzberns gave Kiritsugu Avalon to use a catalyst to get Altria/Arturia/Saber.
Tokiomi grabbed something for Gilgamesh. They show it in the first ep but I don't recall off-hand.
Kayneth originally had a piece of Alexander the Great's cloak but Waver stole it to summon him. Diarmuid was a last minute backup he had to use since his planned Servant was stolen from him.
I don't think we're told what the Matous used for Lancelot but presumably they had something.
Gilles/Caster I think was the one example of the Grail just picking one it found most suitable to Ryunnosuke when he performed the ritual for lolz.

Assassin is... a case where the "rules" used to state that all Assassins summoned had to be one of the Old Men of the Mountain/Hassan-i-Sabbah because by definition a successful assassin would perform their job so well they couldn't be famous enough to count as a Heroic Spirit and the Old Men of the Mountain were the exception to the rule. This rule has since been thrown out the window in later media.

And of course both in the backstory and current media you just straight up can break the rules if you know what you're doing/plot convenience. Like the Einzberns (who were involved in creating the system to begin with) summoning an Avenger in the War before Fate/Zero (which had... consequences) or F/SN's Assassin situation, or countless others.

You find a junk shop that Agatha seems to like. Business seems to be slow at the moment, and the proprietor is giving you the stinkeye. You don't think you stand out a whole lot, so you're not sure what's up with that, but Agatha doesn't even seem to notice the shopkeep. She appears to be having a grand old time, flitting about looking at spare parts and humming to herself as she hands them to you. Luckily junk isn't super expensive, and doubly lucky your currency seems to be good here. It seems you are well on your way to building...
