Wasn't that game said to be the Skyrim killer but failed spectacularly?

Also why though?

My memory of the game is hazy but I thought it was bloated with generic quests and unlike Skyrim couldn't compensate with a well made and atmospheric universe, it was very by-the-numbers. I also remember a shiton of unesscecary mechanics like crafting and such.

The biggest sin of all though was that it was piss easy, I'm not kidding a small toddler could beat the game on its hardest setting doing nothing but button mashing, which sucks because the combat felt really good but nothing could withstand more than 2 attack strings.

For the studios first and only game though it was solid, most of my complaints could easily be fixed in a sequel or with patches.

The game cost something like 3 million to make though and it didn't make it back obviously.

This was the studio's first and only game?
Oof that's harsh.

I mean, if I was in the same situation, I would've been devastated.

It was a successful game, but a bunch of things went wrong with it(successful as in it got positive reviews and sold a lot, it lost the studio a shit ton of money):

The combat is the best thing about that game. There's so much variety to it and it feels very fluid and satisfying. After that is the writing, which is very fleshed out and realized with tons of great lore to ingest. The worst thing about it by far is the questing. All quests feel so generic and the voice acting is pretty bad. It's almost reminiscent of a mid 2000's MMORPG. I always felt it was criminally underrated, but if you expect it to be anything like Skyrim you'll probably be disappointed. I'll probably get the remaster.

This is cool and I'd love to see this game get a true sequel but I'm done buying uprez remasters. Too many of them are nothing more than lazy ports with the word "remaster" slapped on.

For every Shadow of the Colossus remake, RE2 remake, FFVIIR... there's a dozen games like Metal Wolf Chaos XD that are absolute bullshit cash grabs.

IIRC they actually wanted this to be a franchise, but that idea kind of fell through along with the business.

I mostly enjoyed the game, but got burned out trying to be thorough about completing quests because they were all just the same. I made it up to what I believe was the final faction quest line and just drifted quietly away from the game because it couldn't hold my attention anymore. I think it suffered from trying too hard to be a Skyrim killer (which I would bet was mostly due to pressure from EA because that's just how the AAA industry works) and ended up bloated as a result, when it would have been a more enjoyable game with a smaller scope and less padding.

As much as I praise this game I never actually beat it either. Since the questing is so boring, generic, and repetitive I usually got more enjoyment trying to 100% each area and earn achievements.

No shit dood did you read my post? Thought I made that pretty clear.

I stated that I'm done buying lazy uprez remasters, and went on to specify the type of re-release games I am interested in purchasing by naming a few choice remakes I've enjoyed of late

Still have it loaded on my comp but I have never finished it either. I like it, but it gets boring and I always end up playing something else. A remaster won't help probably, they need a remake, but perhaps if they up the difficulty significantly in the remaster that would help.

Maybe I'll go that route if I can fix my computer before the remaster comes out.

I enjoyed that game but it did have issues. The problem was that it was never the main focus of the studio, it was just meant as an introduction to the MMO they were working on and that is where the majority of their time and effort went.

I remember that the studio went under and the rights of the game went to the state of Rhode Island because they fronted the money to develop the game to Curt Schilling

so when the studio went under they decided to auction off all the developed assets for the MMO and they wanted to start the bidding at like a hundred million dollars because of how popular World of Warcraft was

no one bothered to point out to them that nobody was really interested in paying much for an unfinished online game of an IP that not many people actually cared about
