Im not sure I ever even played the Kasumi DLC. Zaaed was one of those buy the game new and get this thing for free things they were doing for a while to discourage used games, so I did have him.

Grunt, Jacob, and Zaeed are the only bad characters. But Zaeed had his moments. Maybe he isnt so bad I guess, just comparatively. But I do love leaving him to die.

Samara is boring a little but has interesting things about her, I enjoy her lore and being a mother. Shes semi-interesting enough but probably the next worst character on the list. Liked Kasumi too for a DLC character but shed be next worst. She was cute, good mission. Even Miranda was better than Ashley. Grunt just rubbed me the wrong way. Boring. Jacob can die.

The rest of the characters are solid gold.

Garrus > Mordin > Kasumi > Thane > Tali > Legion > Grunt > Zaeed > Jacob > Jack > Miranda > Samara

But Jacob is a little worse than Kaidan/Ashley and waaaaay worse than Vega. Jacob's the worst squaddie in the series hands down.

Garrus is my favorite squaddie across all three games. ME2 has a great cast overall though and Mordin, Tali, Zaeed, and Kasumi would all give him some competition.

Kasumi and Zaeed are the only humans I would say are superior to any of the alien characters. The humans (Shepard aside) kinda suck across the board.

I actually find Samara fascinating, and likely the character best suited for Mass Effect's universe outside of video gaming. There are definitely some deep veins of characterization that are better mined in a medium where you can spend more time with conversations. I mean, the tragedy is just so wicked. Giving birth to what is in her culture the ultimate abomination? It's heavy, heavy shit. I honestly felt more sympathy for her than anyone.

Probably Mordin, followed closely by Garrus. I think most of the cast is amazing but I do think those are the clear best ones. As for some others I actually don't remember what the hell Kasumi really was all about. But I very distinctly remember almost every other character (albeit some of it was due to them being some what dull like Kaidan or actively bad like Ashely). But even some like Zaeed has this distinct 80s action movie vibe about him that really stands out.

I like Samara, she's so respectable

But there's a moment during the Citadel DLC where they're all laughing at Shepard's dancing and she says "it is impressive" and it's such a non-comment, so reserved, so lifeless almost, and that kind of sums her up to me. She's a restrained character but it comes at the cost of being interested or entertained by her

That said she has some fantastic scenes and lines and yeah, her story is sympathetic.

Garrus is my favourite overall, but he has the benefit of being great in ME3 as well (and alright in the original). Mordin is my favourite within ME2 only

It's been my opinion for nearly a decade now, and I stand by it. Her conversations have the widest range of topics, including family, art, and faith, and her infamous "racism" toward aliens mostly just boils down to deep cynicism tied to her family's blacklisting. It's partially a character flaw (one that she can work toward overcoming through persuasion), but also partially genuinely accurate. Her metaphor about the bear and dog is proven spot-on in ME3.

By comparison, let's look at the other characters:
-Garrus and Kaidan I don't have any issues with. They're not as compelling or well-rounded as Ash, but still solid. Garrus improves dramatically in ME2 and is ultimately my favorite character in the series, but here he's just decent. I, uh, can't speak to Kaidan in the sequels.
-Wrex is a borderline copy/paste of Canderous from KOTOR. The grizzled mercenary from a warrior culture in decline who's sad to see the state of his people and later becomes their leader in the sequel.Tells stories of battles and other past violent escapades.
-Tali is barely a character in the first game, sadly. I love her in the sequels, where she improved by leaps and bounds, but in ME1 she's just a set of codex entries about the Quarians and Geth. Every single conversation with her is just one exposition dump after another.
-Liara is half exposition dump, half crazed stalker. She practically throws herself at the player after two conversations and has to be turned down repeatedly. I've honestly never liked her outside of Lair of the Shadow Broker, where's she's admittedly pretty good.

Put simply, half the cast of the first game falls into the trap of being exposition machines tied to their species. Tali has nothing else going for her, Liara has some creepy/annoying tendencies in addition, and Wrex fares better but is still ultimately pretty generic. The other half are more well-rounded and feel much more like actual people, but Ashley just stands out more than Kaidan and Garrus in that regard.

I like Grunt, he's a good boy. Every time he gets excited for something violent it makes me happy

I will say that Wrex > Garrus in ME1 and had Wrex stuck with you he'd be the best one I imagine

These results are beautiful. Garrus and Tali are up there with Alistair from Dragon Age Origins as the only characters where I felt a genuine friendship with a party member from a video game.
